Sweet Second Chance
*Chapter 1: The Ghost from the Past* The elevator dinged. Naomi clutched her folder tighter, her palms already sweating. Three years. Three years since she last saw him. Three years since she walked out of his life and broke his heart. And now, she was about to walk into his office. _Denis Mwangi. CEO of Mwangi Holdings._ Her heart hammered against her ribs as the elevator doors slid open. The 20th floor. His floor. The same floor she used to run coffee to him at 7am sharp, when they were just Naomi and Denis. Not boss and secretary. Not exes. The receptionist barely looked up. “Ms. Wanjiku? Mr. Mwangi is expecting you.” Expecting her. Right. For the interview. She needed this job. After what happened with her mom’s hospital bills, she had no choice. Her heels clicked against the marble floor. Each step felt like walking to her execution. The glass doors to the CEO’s office were closed. She raised a trembling hand and knocked. “Come in.” That voice. Deep. Controlled. Cold. It was still the same voice that used to whisper her name at 2am. The same voice that told her he loved her. The same voice that went silent the day she left. She pushed the door open. He was standing by the window, back to her. Black suit. Tailored. Expensive. His shoulders were broader now. His hair shorter. But it was him. Denis turned around slowly. Time stopped. His eyes — dark, sharp, and unreadable — landed on her. For one second, something flickered there. Shock? Pain? She couldn’t tell. Then it was gone, replaced by that CEO mask she remembered so well. “Ms. Wanjiku,” he said, voice flat. “Please, sit.” Naomi. Not Naomi. Ms. Wanjiku. She forced herself to sit, folder on her lap like a shield. “Thank you for seeing me, Mr. Mwangi.” Mr. Mwangi. The corner of his mouth twitched. Was that a smirk? “You have experience as an executive secretary?” “Yes sir. Two years at Kiptoo and Associates.” “And why did you leave?” Because I was running from you. Because I thought it was the only way to protect you. “Personal reasons,” she lied softly. He leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers. Studying her. Like he was seeing right through her lies. “I see,” he said finally. “You should know something, Ms. Wanjiku.” Her breath caught. “I don’t give second chances.” The words hit her like a slap. Three years, and that was the first thing he had to say to her. --- *FLASHBACK* _Three years ago. University. 11pm. Library._ “Naomi, talk to me,” Denis had begged, his hands on her shoulders. He was 22 and already running his father’s company. But to her, he was just Denis. The boy who brought her chai during exams. “I can’t,” she whispered, tears falling. “My dad lost everything. The loan sharks... they said if I don’t disappear, they’ll come for you. For your family. Please, let me go.” “You think I care about them?” he growled. “I care about us.” “I care about you too much to watch you get hurt because of me,” she cried and ran. That was the last time she saw him. She blocked his number. Changed schools. And prayed he would hate her enough to forget. *END FLASHBACK* --- She lifted her chin. She wouldn’t cry. Not here. Not in front of him. “Then it’s a good thing I’m not asking for one, Mr. Mwangi. I’m here for a job.” Silence. Heavy. Thick. Denis stood up and walked around his desk. He stopped right in front of her. Close enough that she could smell his cologne. The same one. He picked up her CV from the desk. “Welcome to Mwangi Holdings, Ms. Wanjiku,” he said quietly. “Your first day is Monday. 7am. Don’t be late.” Naomi blinked. “I... I got the job?” His eyes met hers. And for the first time, she saw it. The hurt. The anger. The something else he was trying so hard to hide. “You did,” he said. “Congratulations.” He turned back to the window. Dismissed. Naomi stood, legs shaking. As she reached the door, his voice stopped her. “Naomi.” Her name. From his mouth. After three years. She froze, but didn’t turn around. “Don’t make me regret this.” The door closed behind her with a soft click. --- Outside, in the elevator, Naomi finally let the tears fall. She pressed her back against the cold wall and slid down. She got the job. God help her. At home that night, she sat by her mom’s hospital bed. The bills were piling up. 300k. 400k. She had no one else. “Did you get it, babe?” her mom whispered weakly. Naomi nodded, wiping her eyes. “Yes mama. I start on Monday.” She didn’t say who her boss was. Across town, Denis poured himself a drink. He hadn’t touched alcohol in three years. _Naomi Wanjiku._ She looked tired. Older. But still the same eyes that haunted his dreams. He downed the whiskey. _I don’t give second chances._ So why the hell did he hire her? --- *THE END OF CHAPTER 1* ---
