The glass shards covered away, fleeing from the angered man. His hands gripped at their delicate surface - slamming them down on the ground in anger. He cursed at himself, at the pain: at her.
The man had sunk down deep into despair. He refused to believe what he had seen. What he had read.
'It may be your name beside hers, but I bedded her.' the letter said.
His bruised hand reached out for the crumpled letter, opening it up, spreading his crimson touch along its snow-white canvas. The proof was right there in the fine print. He groaned to himself, his hands fisting his hair as his mouth opened in a silent scream. His words clogged in his throat.
It hurt. His heart cracked.
The glass digging into his palm didn't hold a candle to the knife that pierced his bleeding heart.
"Why"
'Why do I still love her?' he wondered.
'Why did you ruin us.'
***
"Yes, go ask her. She can help I promise... No, you don't need to tell her etching... Yes, I know.. Would you just go? There she comes - Nova! Leo here wants to ask you something - I'm gonna go... Water the neighbour's hedges?"
Nova eyed the man she fell in love with after one dance, her eyes boring into his in confusion before passing over to the guy who now stood anxiously before her.
His unharmed hand hid the ugly sight of himself from her eyes before he spoke.
"She cheated on me She lied... I- I don't know what to do. Help me."
"You deserve better."
***
Nova thought back to those times. How she urged him to figure out why - her gullibility made her try to pass it onto him. She ruined his life by making him stay with her.
Till finally, Nova cracked down on the girl. Yelling at her for her mistakes. She told her how she could treat him better.
Maybe that was when her feelings for him began.
***
"You're leaving?" Leo whispered, his head hanging low.
The man nodded, "Only for a few years -"
"Don't bullshit with me, Carter! You could die!" He stepped back, moving away from the hand that wished to console him.
"I'm sorry."
***
He found solace in her.
She found solace in him.
They both were broken, corrupted, tarnished... Hopeless.
***
His heart ached each time she smiled at him. It had been months since their joined sadness. The sun seemed to finally shine.
"You okay?" She asked for the umpteenth time, the water in her hands falling down past the gaps of her fingers. He nodded his hands reaching out to touch hers - before he did so - he collected himself: his hands splashed puddles of water at her face.
The loud shriek of surprise she let out warmed his heart.
"Melody! Get over here! Help me!" He heard her yell out, as she got ready to attack him. Her hands wrapping around bits of the sea holding it in her little palms - like his heart.
He smiled.
