Elara's Point of View
"I can't believe Mr. Black would buy the bar you are working at and then hire you to work as his assistant. Not only that, but you also get housing and a car," Nancy said. We were sitting in the living room. As soon as I got home from the bar, I told her what happened. I was still shocked about what had happened. Not only did Mr. Black defend me from a drunk man, but he also offered me a job with triple the pay, a home rent free, and a car.
"I can't believe it either," I replied
"I think he likes you," Nancy said
"What? No. There is no way he likes me," I replied
"Oh, please. He does not like me. Don't you remember what happened at the interview?" I asked
"Yes, I do, but I also remember that he apologized later on that night. He also came here and offered you the job. You turned the job down, so he buys the bar you were working at, saves you from being harassed by a man, and then offers you a job with higher pay, free rent, and a car. It sounds to me like he likes you," Nancy said
"I am sure it is just because I am going to be his assistant," I said
"You think all of his old assistants received that much? I doubt it," Nancy said
"Did you know his old assistant?" I asked
"No. But I do know that he was still there working earlier today. Why would he all of a sudden need an assistant?" Nancy asked, and I stayed silent.
"I am telling you, Elara. No one else is getting paid like that at the company. I sure know I'm not, and his old assistant wasn't either. He definitely has a thing for you," Nancy said
"I am sure you are overthinking. Either way I have decided not to move," I replied
"Why?"
"Because this was my grandparents' house. They worked so hard to buy this house. I don't want to lose it," I said
"You can still keep it. You can fix it up and move back in if you decide to later," Nancy said
"I don't want to owe him anything. Just in case you are right and he has a motive for giving me a new house."
"I guess," Nancy said. A moment later, Clara came down to the living room.
"Hey," She said as she sat across from me on the couch
"Hey," I replied
"How was work?" Clara asked
"It was okay," I replied
"I don't like you working at that bar. You should quit," Clara said. Clara had been telling me how she was worried about me working late nights at a bar. I told her that I would be fine, but I knew she was still worried about my safety.
"Well, I actually don't work there anymore because I found another job," I said
"Really? Where?" Clara asked
"At Black INC," I replied
"You mean the job you went to the interview for but were disrespected?" Clara asked
"How did you know that?" I asked
"I heard you and Nancy talking about it the other day. The man who came that night was the boss of Black INC. I know he came and apologized to you that night for something he said. Anyways ,why are you taking the job now?" Clara asked
"He offered me better pay and a different position," I said
"You really want to take this job? I don't want you doing it for me," Clara said
"I am not only doing it for you. I think this job will be great. I want to take it," I said truthfully. For some reason, I believed that Mr. Black wouldn't disrespect me again the way he did at the interview. Something told me he was being sincere with his apology.
"Okay as long as you want to work there," Clara said, causing me to smile. Clara was a tough girl but she had a big heart. She never wanted me to do something I didn't want to.
"I do."
The Next Morning
"Have a good day. Please make sure you get on the bus after school. I don't know if I will be able to pick you up if you miss it," I said as I got to Clara's school. She had woke up late so I had to take her to school.
"Okay, have a good first day," Clara said
Thank you. You have a good day too" I replied. Clara got out the car and headed into school.
Once I arrived at Black INC I went to the receptionist.
"How can I help you?" The receptionist asked
"I am here to see Mr. Black."
"Your name?"
"Elara Gray," I replied
"Yes, he is expecting you. Take that elevator to the sixth floor," The lady said
"Okay, thank you," I replied. I headed to the elevator, got in and went to the sixth floor. I got out of the elevator and walked to the front desk where a man was seated.
"Hello, my name is Elara Gray and I am here to see, Mr. Black."
"Right. I will take you to him. My name is Chris Smith by the way," Chris said as he held his hand out for me to shake
"Hello, Mr. Smith. It is nice to meet you," I said as I shook his hand.
"You can just call me Chris," He said as we walked to Mr. Black's office. Chris was about to knock on the door when it suddenly opened. Chloe was walking out of it. The top of her red shirt was unbuttoned. I didn't even want to think about what she had been doing in there with Mr. Black. For some reason I felt a pain in my chest just thinking about it
"Um, hello, Chloe," Chris said
"Hi, Chris. Hello Elara Gray. Well I have to go," Chloe said and she walked away.
"Who is there?" Mr. Black suddenly asked. I wanted to walk away after what I had just seen but all I could think about was Clara and how this job could help us.
"Hi Sir. Elara is here," Chris said
"Good."
