That is rule number one. Rule number two is never pher happiness. Thank god… I think the scariest part yet somehow most comforting about this whole situation was Liz. The responsibility I felt while standing in front of the judge and explaining what I could provide for Liz is like nothing else. I remember the fear in the back of my mind telling me that there is no way that they would let me, an 18 years old girl, take care of her. I tried so hard to look and sound confident, but I am pretty sure that my voice was shaking with each word I uttered. Yet somehow, having her here with me is making this all seem okay. It brings me a sense of comfort to know that I am not alone. I could not imagine coming to this apartment without her. It would have been so dull and grey. “Now can we go get ice cream ? I am really hungry..” “You’re hungry and you want ice cream ? Girl we are in New York, we will grab some pizza, go grocery shopping and then have ice cream for desert” “Okay” Liz sighed. I changed out of my sweaty clothes that I slept on the train with and washed my face before heading towards the door, but before we could get out, a familiar name appeared on my screen. “The one and only Ella Joseph. Who would have thought that I would be calling you from a different city to talk ?” “Oh my god, the Carrie Santino is calling all the way to New York just to talk to me ! What heavenly blessing is this ?” I joke around. Carrie Santino, a one of a kind girl who you will never forget after meeting. Italian, fierce as hell, but also some how has the biggest heart. She was the one who helped me get in contact with Elena. When everything happened and she found out about it, she had her parents get in contact with the police station and request that Elena from social services works on my case. Elena and Carrie are relatives, very far relatives but that does not matter in their family. Family is family there no matter the distance. It was like watching a mafia movie whenever I was over at their house. The family bond they had was indescribable, it really felt like it was out of a movie when all the woman of the family would get together and make their own tomato sauce while they ordered the men of the family around. If there is a country that I want to visit, it is totally Italy because of Elena and the whole culture that she introduced me to. “How are you doing nerd ? Settled in yet ?” She asked and it felt surreal that I was having conversation like such with my friend who I used to gossip about boys with. This isn’t how life is supposed to be is it… ? One moment you are a teenager who doesn’t shut up about how hard the math exam was and the second you are moving into an apartment as the legal guardian for your little sister after your parents died. I never imagined adulthood to be this quick to arrive. “We are alright. We recently arrived at the apartment and it is pretty cozy. You better visit us soon” “Of course I will, you think I will let you have all the fun to yourself. Now, what are y’all up to ? Did you unpack yet ?” “Not fully, took out some stuff but we thought we could go grocery shopping and grab some food because someone here has not been able to stop talking about how hungry she is” “Where is that kiddo, lemme talk to her” “You’re on speaker” I say, putting her on. “Kiddo !” “Aunty Carrie !” Liz is quick to reply. “How are you kid?” “I am an adult now ! I have to work around the house and go grocery shopping” she says making me smile, Carrie on the other hand groans “what are you doing to her you monster” making me laugh even more. “Get outta here, Ms Santino. I’m starving too. I’ll call you later yeah ?” “Yeah of course. Take care” “Hey Carrie ?” “Yeah ?” “Thank you for everything, and thank you for checking in. You have really done so much for me and Liz”
