Chapter 1
“Bite her!” A voice shouted behind me as I ran as fast I could. “Suck the life out of her!” Another voice came, making me even more scared. I was completely stupid to have gone camping in the woods with my friend, what the hell was I even thinking? Now a bunch of hungry vampires couldn't wait to get their sharp canines into my veins. “You're letting her get away, catch that girl and rip her heart off!” That deep voice shouted again, he seemed to be their leader. “She's gone behind that tree. Get her!” They were so organized and for a moment I started thinking, “they ain't vampires!” There was one of them who kept dropping the orders and that wasn't so vampire-like, “he must be an Alpha, they might be werewolves.” Does it make any difference if they weren't vampires? They still wanted me for meat. “Run Bella! Run!” Those were the last words of my best friend Vikkie before one of those monsters got his claws deep in her chest. I can never forgive myself for making her come out in the woods with me that day. “Where the hell is she? Y'all let the girl get away?” “No, she's still somewhere.” I looked back and there was no sight of them, so I quickly took cover behind a big tree and hoped no one could find me. Well that was the most stupid thing I did that night, those hungry creatures could smell me! “She's somewhere close.” One of them said, looking around. “I smell blood. Fresh from the vein.” Oh s**t! I knew I messed up when I decided to hide there, but I was so tired and I needed to rest. My eyes were wide open, ready to jump if I saw any of them. I tried to control my breathing so much but as I already knew, my Asthma was definitely going to blow my cover, and it did. Suddenly, a tightness gripped my chest, squeezing the air from my lungs. It was as if invisible hands suddenly wrapped around my chest, squeezing tighter with every second. I tried so much to breathe but each attempt felt like trying to suck air through a tiny straw. I checked my pockets furiously for my inhaler and that's when I heard the voice “looking for this?” Oh s**t! I was shocked to look up and see Jackson standing in front of me with my inhaler in his hand. He was the captain of the basketball team in Calton Hills High School, my school too. I didn't need to ask any questions, he had blood on his shirt and he didn't have nails now, it was claws and his eyes completely golden, “he's one of them? He's a werewolf too?” I wondered in shock. He was one of the coolest guys in school, always minding his business and early to team practice except he was late for all his classes. “I can't believe he's one of them.” Well he wasn't just one of them, he was a Beta! The second in power after the Almighty Alpha. “What are we gonna do with her now?” One of them asked, looking at me as I struggled to breath. “She's already dead anyway, I can't eat some dead meat. Let's leave her.” Another said, he was the scariest of them all, having sharp claws with completely red eyes, and he needed no introduction because he was certainly the alpha. They always had those bloody scary eyes with so much hunger in them. “Hey Jackson, keep the inhaler with you. Let's get the hell outta here. She'll be dead soon.” The pack of werewolves turned their backs leaving me there to finally get finished by my health condition. I felt like I would give up in each second that passed “Ja… Jacks…” that was the best I could do to call Jackson, hoping to trigger his humanity so he could give me back my inhaler. They were already far away but I knew he could hear me begging for breath, they had a super hearing ability which could make them hear even a whisper from miles away. “Please…” I finally said a complete word. I was completely overwhelmed with fear, an almost primal terror because at that moment, I wasn’t just short of breath, I was a 17 year old high school girl suffocating, drowning in plain sight. My heart pounded furiously, sending a wave of dizziness through me and finally, it was all darkness. ****** “She was found by the roadside in Calton Hills.” “Doctor please tell me will my daughter be alright? I can't take it if anything happens to my baby.” I heard a familiar voice, it sounded like my mother. Hearing voices only meant I was alive but how did that happen? Last time I checked, I was killed by an asthma attack. I opened my eyes to discover myself on a hospital bed, there was a sharp scent of antiseptic and steady beep of machines surrounding me. For a moment I wanted to ask “is anyone here?” I could still hear the voice of the doctor talking to my mom right at the door. “We examined her body and there's only two things we found.” “Tell me doctor.” “She had an asthma arrest and she was bitten by an animal.”. “An animal? What animal?” My mom sounded shocked, but not as shocked as I was because I never remembered being bitten by any kind of animal “this doctor must be lying. He's up to something.” I concluded. “What kinda animal bit my daughter?” mom asked again, almost in tears. “We still don't know Miss Melissa, she'll surely be awake now, we'll have to ask her a few questions about what exactly happened to her.” “Alright. Where's her room?” “Follow me.” I was expecting the doctor to take a few steps and open the door to the room I was in, but they started walking a long distance and I could hear them climbing some stairs. “What? They weren't standing right outside my door?” I asked. But I could hear them so clearly like they were beside that door. “Is something wrong with my hearing?” I tried to sit up but my arm felt heavy, tethered to a blood bag, while an IV drip fed fluids into my other vein. “It's such a long walk, maybe we should've used the elevator.” My mom said as they climbed the stairs. And that's when I concluded there was something wrong with me, they were downstairs and I could hear them talk and could hear their footsteps. “This is all messed up!” The door finally opened, my mum rushed to give me a hug and after a few minutes, the police came in, Sheriff Marcus demanded to ask a few questions and they immediately commenced when I said yes. “Do you remember the animal that bit you?” A question came. “What?” I got confused. “I wasn't bitten by any animal.” I said shifting back into the bed. The doctor moved closer to me “Well we examined you Bella and you have a terrible bite from some kinda creature we can't really figure out.” “I already said I wasn't bitten!” I was so angry already because “Hey, I remember everything that happened the previous night, there was no animal biting anybody.” “The previous night?” Sheriff Marcus asked. “Yes I was attacked last night.” “But you've been in the hospital for three days. Last night you were still on this hospital bed. We've been waiting for you to recover so we could ask some questions.” “Oh my God!” There was a lot going on that I didn't know, “I've been here for three good days?” “Yes my baby.” Mom said rubbing her hand in my hair, she looked like she'd been waiting forever just to speak to me again. She slowly pushed my dress up exposing my laps, “look at this.” She said to me and I immediately turned to see a big bandage covered there. “This is the bite we're talking about.” Sheriff Marcus said, handing me some photos of the wound that were taken beforehand. “Oh my God!” I wasn't sure if I was shocked at how severe and dangerous the wound looked or how disgusting it was. I was truly bitten. But I couldn't recall how any of that happened. “What is really going on?”
