ALONDRA’S POV “Alondra! Alondra, baby! It’s time to get up! You’re going to be late for training if you don’t hurry!” I woke to the sound of my aunt’s voice yelling at me from the bottom of the stairs. I always hated it when she did that. Why the hell couldn’t she just come to my damn door? “Yeah, yeah. I’m up,” I replied, annoyed and groggy. I pulled my half asleep body out of the bed and dragged myself to my bathroom, kicking a couple of my moving boxes out of my way. I looked at my face and sighed. “Damn it! I fell asleep in my makeup again. I really gotta stop drinking so much on the weekends.” I thought aloud, stripping off my clothes from the night before and stepping into the shower. I stood there in the skin-melting hot water for a while, trying to sterilize the stench of alcohol and smoke off of my skin then scrubbed vigorously with my favorite body wash. After washing my long brown locks, I stepped out and wrapped my body in a towel before floating down the stairs towards the smell of fresh coffee and donuts. “Mm, that smells amazing, Auntie Faith. I love your homemade donuts.” I dropped into the seat closest to the large bay window and laid my head on the table sniffing the aroma of freshly fried dough. “Well, I figured since you were out all night you could use a good pick me up before training. I know you’re probably too hungover for anything heavier than a donut and coffee.” She placed a large mug of black coffee in front of me, then placed my favorite french vanilla creamer on the table. “You are my champion, truly.” I added a touch of cream and sipped slowly on the liquid of the gods. Faith laughs, turning back to the counter to glaze some cooled off donuts. “So, where the hell is Andrea? I called for her but she hasn’t come down yet.” Aunt Faith questioned. I squinted my eyes at her. She knows the drill. No questions until after the first cup of coffee is empty. “Good morning mama. Good morning Alondra.” My cousin, Andrea, skipped the last two stairs and leaped to the floor. “Mm, fresh donuts and coffee? Sign me up!” Andrea poured herself a cup of coffee before kissing me on the top of my head and plopping down into the seat next to me. My Aunt Faith raised me alongside my cousin since I was a newborn. Andrea and I were like sisters, always exploring together, learning together and getting into trouble together. We both enjoyed a lot of the same things, so always having her around was nice. Although, one of the biggest differences between us was that she was a morning person, and I am, to date, not. “Ugh! Why are you always so loud in the morning? Where the hell do you get all this energy anyway?” I huffed. She poured an over abundance of cream and sugar into her coffee and took a sip. “You are just a buzzkill in the morning,” said Andrea, grinning at me. “I will never be able to understand how we can dance and drink into almost four in the morning, and you can still wake up so bright and cheerful. It’s quite a superpower, Drea.” I teased. “Alright, ladies. Eat your donuts and get dressed quickly. Drea, baby, you have work soon and Alondra, you’ve got training in an hour.” Aunt Faith placed a plate of chocolate and plain glazed donuts with a couple of napkins onto the table, then grabbed one and walked off. “Thanks!” Andrea and I said in unison. “So, do you work tonight? I was hoping we could hit up that new club that just opened up downtown.” Andrea said with a mouthful of glazed donut. “Sorry. I work tonight. After my training, I have a few hours before I have to clock in at the bar. Why don’t you come by and have a drink? Monday nights aren’t much fun.” I sighed, biting into a chocolate glazed donut and sipping on my coffee. “Alright, I will be there tonight then. I should make it there around eight or so. I’m meeting up with Alice to go shopping and then I’m going to have to come back here to freshen up.” I nodded to acknowledge everything she said, then finished up my coffee and headed up the stairs to get dressed. “See you later, boo!” She smacked me on the butt then ran out of the kitchen. I growled. “One of these days, I’m going to strangle that girl,” I mumbled as I continued up the stairs. After a quick glance through my closet, I spotted my favorite workout gear. The outfit consisted of short black shorts and a black crop top. It seemed as though black was all I wore, that is, unless I was hitting up the club. I liked to sparkle when I went clubbing. I quickly slipped on my clothes and grabbed my bag, then ran down the stairs again. I stopped in the kitchen to grab a bottle of water, then opened the front door. “See you later, babe!” Aunt Faith shouted from her altar room. “Love you!” “I love you too, auntie. See you later.” I made it to the gym with fifteen minutes to spare, so I decided to use that time to stretch while waiting for my trainer. I sat on the mat and spread out my legs, leaning into them to stretch my back and hamstrings. As I sat up with my back straight, I heard the sound of metal flying in the air. I quickly rolled out of the way just before a throwing knife hit the wall. As I stood to my feet, two more came flying at me. I flipped over one and dodged the other. Another one came at me, then another and another. I managed to avoid all of them, or so I thought. I looked at my arm and had a small cut that was running blood down my arm. “Alright, that’s enough! You got me.” I called out. My trainer, Gerard, stepped from around the corner with a giant grin on his face. “God damn, Gerry, you could have warned me!” Gerard laughed heartily, slapping his knee. “Oh, relax Alondra! I knew you could handle it!” “Dummy, you got my arm.” I said, gritting my teeth. “That’s barely even a flesh wound! More like a papercut. You heal pretty fast. It’s fine. You’re fine.” Gerard walked to me and slapped my shoulder. I grabbed his arm and flipped him over my shoulder. I checked the cut on my arm as he winched, reaching for his back. “f**k!” he exclaimed. “Oh, it’s fine. You’re fine!” I mocked him as he pulled himself off the floor. “Point taken.” he grunted. “In all seriousness, you did great. Not many people can hear throwing knives coming, let alone dodge ten of them and be unscathed.” I widened my eyes and looked at my arm, then back at him. “Well, almost unscathed. Your hearing is really sharp. I guess that’s the perk of being half-” Before he could finish his sentence, I threw one of the knives just passed his head. “I told you never to mention that. Ever.” I seethed. “Right, sorry. You know I didn’t mean to upset you. I was just- sorry.” Gerard apologized. Gerard is not only my trainer, he is also my best friend. We met when we were kids in fourth grade. Gerard took an interest in martial arts weapon combat and once he completed his training as a black belt, he agreed to train me. Gerard knows everything about me, including the fact that I am half werewolf. It is not a subject I ever cared to speak on. Anyone who knew my secret also knew that talking about it was the best and easiest way to piss me off. “Whatever, Gerard. Let’s just get this session over with. I have to work tonight and I’d like to get a little rest before I have to go in.” I wiped the blood off my shoulder and got ready to spend the next few hours blowing off some steam.
