ALONDRA’S POV I never got to meet my mother. She died before I was born. I almost died that night too. If it weren’t for my Aunt Faith, I would have. Faith is probably the strongest woman I know. It isn’t everyday that someone could carve a baby out of their dead little sister and be able to live a normal life after. My aunt told me the story of that terrible night. The look on her face broke my heart. Faith was surely haunted by the sight of her younger sister’s mangled body. Then having to cut me out of her womb. My mother was a gentle woman with a beautiful soul. Unfortunately, her soulmate turned out to be a werewolf, and alpha to be specific. Faith told me she did not know much about this alpha, but knew that my mother was smitten with him. She spoke of him often and, according to my mother, he used to be a cold-hearted, ruthless man. She told Faith that she feared him at first- that he hated her because she was human. But once he opened himself up to his human mate, he was the sweetest man she had ever known. They spent lots of time together and eventually she got pregnant. According to Faith, my mother was happy with her mate. But then everything took a turn for the worse. My mother’s mate was supposed to take his place as alpha of his pack, but a human luna just would not be accepted. My mother called Faith and asked her to perform a protection spell for herself and her baby, but by the time Faith got to her house, she found her sister lying half dead on the floor choking on her own blood. “Oh my goddess, Maryse! What happened to you!?” Faith screamed when she found my mother. “Alpha…he…” My mother struggled to speak. “The alpha did this? But why?” Faith cried, taking her younger sister’s head and gently placing it on her lap. “My…my…my baby. Faith, don’t let her die. Save her.” My mother managed to cough out those last two words before closing her eyes and never opening them again. “I cried into her bloody chest, shaking uncontrollably.” Faith said as she told the story. “I held my little sister close and wailed harder than I ever have before. I called for help but an ambulance would not arrive for at least forty minutes. The weather was so bad, it was damn near impossible for them to get to us. So I decided to perform the c-section. I had to perform the c-section on my dead sister.” Faith sobbed softly as she told Andrea and I the story. I was only thirteen, but she felt like I needed to know what happened to my mother. I am forever indebted to Aunt Faith. She saved my life. I wouldn’t be here if she didn’t do what she did. Then again, my mother might still be here if she wasn’t mated to that monster who turned on her. I despise werewolves. Nothing good can come from them. While this may be a form of hate, I simply give no shits. I have spent my entire life trying to suppress my wolf half. After my thirteenth birthday, I began hearing a voice ringing in my head. With the knowledge given to me by Faith, I was able to quickly realize that the voice I was hearing was my wolf spirit. I wanted nothing to do with it. I began doing research on how to suppress a wolf spirit, or if it was even possible. I just wanted to be all of my mother, and none of my demon of a father. After a few weeks of the voice combating me in my head, I was able to suppress it. Wolves and humans shouldn’t be mated. I still question the Moon Goddess about her choices in forcing humans to be with wolves. I heard about Symone Mitchell, a powerful slayer who is also a human. She is feared by many in the supernatural world. She is famous for her ability to take down a full-grown wolf on her own. She is also famous for being Master Altair O’darius’ only human pupil. All the power and skill she possessed did her no good when she was suddenly brought to her knees by the bond she shared with a wolf. After my three-hour fighting session with Gerard, I ran some errands, then went home. I did a bit of meditating and chanting with Aunt Faith, then took a shower and a nap. I had to go to work a few hours later and needed a little quiet time. After a two-hour nap, I woke to the sound of the song It’s No Crime by Babyface. Music was always an escape for me, and there is no better music than old school R&B. I let the playlist continue while I grabbed my attire for my shift at the bar, and listened to the music while putting on my makeup and doing my hair. I got into my car and connected my phone to the speakers, blasting the entire album as I drove down the street. I arrived at Marley’s Hot Spot, a local bar and restaurant run by a good friend of mine. I parked in my usual spot, pushed my phone into my purse and walked inside. “Hey, sexy lady! You’re a little early.” Marley said as she wiped down the bar. We shared a friendly peck on the cheek and I stepped behind the bar. “Ah, there is my favorite lady. Where ya been, beautiful?” Oscar, a regular bar fly, sat at the bar with two empty beer bottles in front of him with a half empty one in his hands. “Hey, Oscar! My shift doesn’t start for another twenty minutes.” The older gentleman slammed his now third empty bottle onto the bar and grinned drunkenly at me. “Does that mean I have to wait a whole twenty minutes before I can start tipping your pretty self?” Marley shook her head, laughing. “Damn, Oscar. You’re drunk from only three beers? Getting to be a lightweight?” I joked, clearing off the bottles and wiping the counter. Oscar laughed hysterically, throwing his head back and patting his beer gut. “Girl, please! Those are just the three after the first three I cleared away.” Marley said. “Now, you should know old Oscar better than that, pretty lady.” Oscar said, rummaging through his pockets for money. He takes out a large wad of hundred dollar bills and throws them on the counter. “Here ya go, beautiful. That should cover my bill, and tips for both you lovely ladies.” I picked up the money and counted it. “Oscar, this is five hundred. Your bill was thirteen.” I handed him back four of the hundred dollar bills, rang up his bill and handed him his change. “Nope, keep the rest, girls,” he insisted. “But I want Alondra to get most of that.” Oscar said to Marley, wagging his finger at her. We both giggled. “But she didn’t even do anything. She just got here and she isn’t even on the clock. What did she do to earn it?” Just as Marley finished talking, I gave Oscar a bottle of water. “Well, there you go. Now she earned it.” said Oscar as he chugged down the water. Marley laughed, then took some glasses into the kitchen to be washed. As she pushed the door open with her butt behind me, I could hear one of the glasses fall off the stack. With lightning speed, I turned and caught the glass before it hit the floor. “Damn girl! You are quick!” Oscar said with surprise on his face. “How did you even know the glass was falling?” “I, uh. I saw the reflection in your bright blue eyes, Oscar.” I lied, batting my eyelashes at the flirtatious old man. While I am half werewolf, I have most of their strengths- a heightened sense of hearing and speed being two of them. No one but Faith, Gerard, Andrea and her friend Alice know about that. I like Marley a lot, but I didn’t need every single person to know about my leniage. “Oh, you flatter this old man, beautiful. Here. Here’s another hundred bucks for being so pretty.” He placed a crinkled up hundred dollar bill on the counter. “No! You already tipped me generously Oscar. Now take this and go home. I will call your ride.” I gently shoved the money into the old man’s hand and grabbed the phone. “That man is smitten with you, girl.” Marley said as she returned from the kitchen. Maybe you should give him a shot.” “Yeah right.” I rolled my eyes as she punched my arm lightly. The night was as it usually was- not very slow, but not as packed as it is on the weekends. I served my customers with a smile on my face as I did every shift and always got big tips. While women did tip me generously, my biggest tips always came from men who were mesmerized by my eyes. I have one icy blue eye and the other is brown. I was used to all the questions about my eyes since I’ve been getting them since I was little. As the night dragged on, Andrea finally came in with her friend, Alice, and took two empty seats at the bar. “Hey, sexy.” Alice said, batting her eyelashes at me. Andrea gave me a kiss and hug over the counter, rolling her eyes. “Why are you always hitting on my cousin?” Andrea questioned. Alice stuck her tongue out and looked me up and down. “Um, because she’s hot as f**k. I could probably convince her to bat for the other team if she’d just give me a chance.” Alice stated boldly, looking me straight in my face. “I’m flattered. You’re hot too, Alice. But I like penis.” I blew her a kiss and she pouted. Andrea laughed. “Ha! Shot down again. What is that? The millionth time?” We all laughed and I began pouring drinks for the girls. As I placed the drinks on the bar in front of them, I got a strong scent of something. It was invigorating. I had never smelled anything so comforting and intoxicating in my life. “Do you smell that?” I asked, looking around the room. “Smell what?” Alice looked around as I did. “I smell those amazing burgers that Jeff is making. I think I’m gonna order one.” Andrea said, looking over the food menu. “No, it smells like…leather and musk.” I continued to look for the source. I felt an overwhelming need to find out where it was coming from. That’s when a large group of tall, muscular men with one woman entered the bar at the same time. They were all around the same age- in their mid or late twenties, maybe early thirties. The scent got stronger as they walked in. My eyes danced around each of them. I felt like the heartwarming scent was coming from one of them. That’s when he stepped into my view. He was a tall man, around six foot four, with long black hair framing his stunning face which made his beautiful green eyes pop. He had a goatee and even completely covered in a black leather coat, I could tell his body was chiseled. I have never been the kind of girl to drool over a man no matter how sexy he may be, but something in me told me not to look away. His eyes met mine and I watched them go from a soft green to an onyx black. Then I heard that dreaded word that I never wanted to hear. It was from my wolf- the wolf that I had suppressed all those years ago, the voice I never wanted to hear again spoke one word. I swear I heard him growl and the realization of what was happening made me drop the tequila bottle that was in my hand. “MATE!”
