chapter 22

Quinn mansion. It has been months since Xavier ran away but it felt as if the incident happened the previous day at the Quinn’s. Penelope’s anger had not reduced even by an inch. What angered her most was that Alfred claimed that he love Xavier and wanted what was best for him every time they talked about him yet his men were still out there hunting her son as if he was some animal. She was not going to give in to her husband’s sweet talks that always got her. She was sitting at the living room sipping on her tea like a typical ma’am of a mansion when, like every other day, Alfred walked in to try and coax her. She has been giving him all kind of treatment and they were not pleasing to Alfred. He missed his wife. He had been sleeping on the sofa ever since Xavier left. He was not allowed in any other room and Penelope had locked all the other rooms to ensure that he slept on the sofa. “Penny darling, this has gone long enough. Why are you still angry? Do you think that I enjoy doing this? Hunting down my own son.” Alfred’s tone was a little higher than he would normally talk to Penelope, but she did not care, she could not care less about his opinion anymore because it was clear to her that her husband could think clear with his ego filled head. She continued to ignore him and sip on her tea which angered Alfred. He roared mercilessly at Penelope, “You know what Penelope? This, all this is your fault. Yes you heard me, it is all your fault. You failed as a mother. You showered him and pampered him, which is why he turned out like this. Maybe if you dedicated yourself into teaching him how to be a real man he wouldn’t have been running after a man right now. It is all on you and I am here trying to fix thing and you are giving me that b****y attitude of yours! Aren’t you ashamed?” Penny could not take it anymore. She smashed the cup she was holding spilling the tea on the floor responding with the same anger. “How dare you ask me that question? Aren’t I ashamed?” she lets out a chuckle as she continues. “Yes, I am ashamed! But not of Xavier, I am ashamed of you! How can you be so heartless? I cannot believe you! I cannot believe the audacity you have to tell me I failed as a mother, that I failed to teach my son how to be a real man when YOU are the man. The nerve you have to ask me that question is really nerve racking. What did you do for Xavier except expect from him. You are egoistic Alfred and it is repulsive. This is your fault. For once, just for once, if you had listened to what your son wanted and left your ego aside we wouldn’t be in this situation. We would have been happy like we always have been but no, you wanted things your way because your way is always right, isn’t it? Do you even realize that you may never see your ONE AND ONLY child ever again. Where will you get another child? Tell me mister know it all.” Penny was fuming but no less than Alfred. Even after the facts that had been stated he still rose his chin up and answered, “I am not the one who has problems having kids, remember that.” With that said in a calmest tone as if it was not offensive at all, Alfred left a broken Penelope standing in disbelief. Clearly Alfred was not thinking straight because he would never say that to Penny because he knew that it was a sensitive topic for her even though she acted tough about it. Tears rolled down Penny’s eyes. Not even in her dreams has she thought that Alfred would say such a thing to her because she knew that no matter what tough time they were going through, they loved each other with their imperfections, at least that was what she thought. Not only did Alfred words offend her but they made her think about things she never thought she would have to think about. What did he even mean? Has he always had the thought that he could have a child with whoever he wanted? What if he already has a child that she did not know about? That thought caused Penny to breakdown into tears and her being a strong woman, everyone else was very worried including Alfred. He knew he messed up but he was too egoistic to give in to his mistakes, leaving Penny to cry on her own. She felt suffocated. She wanted to leave the house. She did not want to be anywhere near Alfred, hence she went to the master bedroom and took a few of her belongings and walked back down stairs heading towards the main door. “Where are you going? Why do you have your belongings with you? Is this because of what I said earlier? How mature of you Penny. Are you really going leaving because of something that I did not even mean? Is this how you are going to act from now on? Every time we fight, you are just going to pack your bags and go?” Alfred honestly thought that he was helping. He thought that he could try calm his wife down and not let his pride go at the same time but he unknowingly rubbed salt in Penny’s wounds. He could not feel what she was feeling and he did not notice how his words hurt Penelope. Penny just pushed him aside and headed to her parents’ house. Alfred did not know what to do. He knew it was his fault but he was not ready to accept it. Even when the woman he loved the most was leaving him alone. She was the pillar he leaned on and without her he was bound to self-destruction. This was a wakeup call that he ignored and thought she will come back eventually. Only if he knew that things were about to go up hill for him. Downhill was an easy ride, and his ride was nowhere heading to easy.
