After a week of bad hospital food—first too much rest, and then not enough—Avery was ready to go home and she wasn’t ashamed to let everybody know it. She was tired of the nurses coming in to check her vitals at all hours.
How is anyone supposed to get any rest if they keep waking them every couple of hours, she’d asked me angrily after we’d both been awakened at three o’clock in the morning.
She was tired of having to call a nurse every time she needed to use the bathroom, tired of having to be bathed in her bed. Most of all, she was tired of moving from room to room and changing care teams. Just when she got used to one set of nurses, they’d move her and she’d have to start all over.
