FOREWORD
“Once upon a time in a castle far, far away lives a princess, as an only offspring, she was pampered by her parents, giving her all she wants, it was all joy, happiness and laughter in her own little kingdom, until one night, a witch entered their humble abode, the king and queen trusted the witch with their baby, unfortunately, the lady didn't give her loyalty to them, and she took their lovely child away from them, to a place, far, where no one can find them.”
“Mom, that sounds a lot like Rapunzel, doesn't it?”
The little girl asked her parent while she sat at her feet. She stared at the woman. “I love mother, she makes delightful stories which I've never seen or heard before, so why is this tale so familiar?” The little child thought.
“It does, sweetie.” The mother whispered, tracing a bit part of her child's cheek.
“But you've never told me a tale the same to those princesses.” The girl said with pride.
“It sounds like it sweet, but it doesn't mean it's the same story, remember what I've always advised you?” She asked.
“Never judge a book by its cover, I know mom, it's just that... It's...”
“Hush child, now listen.” The mother interjected.
The small girl nodded and looked up to her mom again, while she reads the novel in her hands, mother's book, when will I ever read it myself? She pondered.
“The queen and king woke up the next day only to find their daughter missing. They both fell to the ground and wept for the lost of their loved child.
The witch used the princess to her gain, letting her believe the love she shows her, which as I might say, does not exist. The princess grew up full of pleads, questions and unanswered prayers. When will she be able to escape the tower and explore the wonders of the earth that's hidden from her sight? When? She asked.
One day, she plucked up the courage and asked her parent, the witch. “Mother, I'm already of age. Can I leave the tower and explore the earth outside this tiny cavern?” The daughter asked, however, no matter how politely she asks, her mom, would consistently have the same answer, “no”. She didn't know how a simple reject made her so angry. Why does mother ever have to be so cruel, imprisoning me in this tower! She yelled.
The daughter had enough, while her parent was away, she went outside the tower and ventured to the great world, she traveled, by herself, I mean with her little chameleon, the chameleon wasn't her pet, it's her companion, her only companion. She strode straight, to the path mother has always walked to, she walked and walked until, she arrived at a place called “City” she stepped in the middle of a crowd, and then she realized she doesn't know anyone nor does anyone know her, for the first time in her entire life, she felt “alone” she misses the tower, there were only three people in there, but she was never alone, she didn't feel lonely, but the city, although it has a lot of people to interact with, she still felt, forsaken.
The girl quickly turned her body away from the city and planned to go back to the tower, however a radiant smile caught her eyes, she looked at the person “preferably a boy” as what she read on books, she stared at him for quite a while, wondering how to talk to him, she approached him and took his hands In hers, the boy looked at her, confused at the sudden act, then he suddenly smiled and handed her a paper, “If you want to, you can visit our shop ma'am, it sells really great coffee” he told her and then smiled afterwards, the girl didn't know what he meant, but she nodded anyways, at that time she didn't care about exploring the world, she only cared about the wonderful orbs the man in front of her have, “beautiful” she whispered.
From that day on the little girl had always met up with her prince on that very spot at the same time, she didn't want to go back to the tower, so she stayed in the city, she would sleep on a bench and meet the boy the next day, it was cold, yes, but the boy's smile is enough for her to feel warm, 'love, is that what I'm feeling?' just like in those romance books mother hovers on her room? Yes. It is, her heart replied with a beat twice as fast as the normal beat of her heart. For the following months the boy would always visit her there, feed her, give her clothes and look adoringly at her face. I'm finally happy, she said. But then one day, her happiness turned into what seems like anger and betrayal. The man, those orbs of his lied to her, it wasn't her he loved but another, and those fingers seems to be missing something every time he would visit her, a ring. He was married, the man wasn't hers, he can't be hers. The day she knew of the truth was the day the man never went back to their meeting place, snow came, she was cold and hungry, and her heart made things worst, her heart doesn't seem to be happy anymore, this little beating thing inside her aches, but it feels numb. She waited on that place with her little friend until snow went away, the day after the last snowfall, was the day she turned herself away from the city and ventured back to the tower, she failed, the world does not dazzle, nor was it nice to her, she thought it was, for a while until she realized it wasn't, the day those green orbs vanished from her sight was the time she realized, the world is not so great after all, it was only great because he was there, because she can see him, her prince.”
The girl solemnly looked at her mother's tear streaked face, it was the first time she saw her mother cry, the only woman she had adored in her life was crying in front of her. She looked at her mother with a sad look on her face, the woman noticed her child's stare and forced one smile in her wrinkled face.
“child, this will be my last story to you, I hope you remember this story, sweet, keep this tale in your mind, don't ever forget it, alright?” The little girl nodded
“the world might seem lovely, but believe me, it isn't. This world is full of deceits and lies, you can't trust anyone, you always have to be careful, don't make the same mistake that girl in my story did, just don't. I beg you. I can't ever take it if you went through what she went through” the woman continued and looked at her child's face, her child is crying “Don't cry, little girl. You know that I love you and I want you to live happy and free, but I don't want you to experience what she had been through, I can't let you have that, that would destroy you, just like how it destroyed her.”
Those were the last words that Sashanna Ines heard from her mother, the last face her mother showed her was full of fear, the last words were to never ever make the same mistake that girl in the story made. That day was the last day she stayed in that house, the next day she was sent to an orphanage, just like the girl in the story, she was taken away from her mother and just like that girl she was imprisoned in a place where a lot of imprisoned children takes shelter, when can she get out? She badly wants to go out. The little girl sat in her bed and looked outside the window, it was snowing, she wondered if another person waited in the snow for someone they love to come back then she glanced at the book she was embracing, mother's book.
When will my fairy tale begin? Will I get my own happy ending too? Just like those princesses? She asked quietly and let the darkness take her along to the road of her memories, the memories she had with her mother. The little girl smiled.
“Mother, I promise you, I won't ever make the same mistake....” She whispered, while a lone tear slipped from her eyes. “That you did” the little girl continued.
