"Mom, who's coming to our New Year's Eve gala?" I ask as I enter the large kitchen.
"All our friends and their kids," she replies, typing on her laptop at the counter.
Everyone? Including Vanessa?
"Is Vanessa going?" she asks, unaware that we stopped talking almost two months ago.
"We aren't talking, and she's dating someone else," I sigh.
"I'm sure she'll come around. In the meantime, can you drop this off at Arlene's house?" she says, handing me an envelope.
I ring the bell, and Kevin opens the door.
"Hi, what are you doing here? The party isn't until Saturday," Kevin asks.
"I came to drop this off for your mother," I say, handing him the envelope.
