Chapter 1

455 Words
It was just another day in school, and yet it felt like the world had come crashing down on him. The boy he had been crushing on for months, the rich kid with the perfect smile and the perfect life, had just asked out another girl. He had known it was coming. He had seen the way the girl had been flirting with his crush, had seen the way his crush had been responding to her. But still, it hurt. It hurt so much that he had to excuse himself from class, pretending that he was sick, just so he could sit alone in the bathroom and cry. He knew that it was silly, that he shouldn't be this upset over someone who didn't even know that he existed. But he couldn't help it. He couldn't help the way his heart ached every time he saw his crush talking to someone else. He was just a poor gay teenager who had never fit in anywhere. His family struggled to make ends meet, and he had always felt like he was on the outside looking in. And now, to add insult to injury, he had fallen in love with someone who was so far out of his league that he might as well have been living on a different planet. He wiped away his tears, took a few deep breaths, and tried to compose himself. He knew that he couldn't stay in the bathroom forever, and eventually, he had to face the reality of his unrequited love. It was a long walk back to his classroom, and he felt self-conscious every step of the way. He tried to keep his head down, tried to avoid eye contact with anyone, tried to pretend that he was invisible. But of course, he wasn't invisible. The other kids whispered and pointed as he walked by, and he could feel their eyes on him. He knew that they knew he was gay, and even if they didn't say it out loud, he could tell that they were judging him. He made it to his classroom and took his seat, trying to ignore the looks of pity from his classmates. He couldn't bear the thought of them feeling sorry for him, of them thinking that he was weak because of the way he felt about another boy. And so he tried to focus on his schoolwork, tried to pretend that everything was normal. But it was a lie, and he knew it. Everything was far from normal, and he didn't know how he was going to make it through the day. Everything has been so rough for him. He's starting to lose his will to live. Maybe he is unlucky indeed.
