Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months. David watched as Ryan dated different girls, each one looking more perfect and polished than the last.
He tried to move on, he really did. He went on a few dates with other guys, but they never felt like more than just friends. He couldn't help but compare them to the rich guy, and they always fell short.
He knew that it was unhealthy to hold onto this obsession, that it was making him miserable. But he couldn't let go. He was convinced that if he just hung on long enough, if he just proved himself enough, then the rich guy would eventually see him for who he really was.
But the more he tried to be the person he thought the rich guy wanted him to be, the more he lost himself. He began to despise the person he had become, someone who was constantly second-guessing himself and trying to fit in with people who would never truly see him as an equal.
One day, as he was sitting in the library, trying to study for an upcoming test, he saw the rich guy walk in with yet another girl on his arm. He couldn't take it anymore. He slammed his book shut and stormed out of the library.
He didn't know where he was going, only that he needed to get away from Ryan and his perfect life. He found himself wandering through the streets, lost in his thoughts.
It wasn't until he stopped at a bus stop that he realized where he was. It was the edge of town, the place where the wealthy people lived. He had never been this far from his own neighborhood before.
He sat down on the bench, feeling more alone than ever. He didn't know why he had come here, what he had hoped to achieve. He was just so tired of feeling like he wasn't enough, like he was always on the outside looking in.
As he sat there, lost in his thoughts, he felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned around to see Ryan standing behind him, looking slightly out of breath.
"Hey," Ryan said, a small smile on his face. "You okay?"
David couldn't believe what was happening. This was the first time the rich guy had ever spoken to him. He felt like he was dreaming.
"I'm fine," he managed to say, trying to keep his voice steady.
Ryan sat down next to him, and they sat in silence for a few moments, watching the cars go by.
"I see you around a lot," Ryan said finally, breaking the silence. "You seem like a cool guy."
David couldn't believe what he was hearing. Was Ryan actually talking to him? Was this really happening?
They chatted for a few minutes longer, until the bus pulled up and David had to get on. He couldn't believe what had just happened, but he was too scared to let himself hope.
As the bus drove away, he looked out the window and saw Ryan standing on the side of the road, watching him go. He couldn't help but wonder what this meant, if it meant anything at all. But for the first time in a long time, he felt a glimmer of hope.
