"Drop your weapons!" a voice roared through the rainy night, but it wasn't the police.
Before the lead gunman could pull the trigger, a dark shadow dropped from the overpass above. A man dressed in a tactical suit slammed into the shooter, throwing him to the ground with a sickening crunch. Within seconds, four more highly trained operators from the Drake Syndicate appeared from the shadows, moving with lethal precision.
Gunfire erupted, muffled by the heavy downpour. Jax stood perfectly still in the center of the chaos, the rain washing the blood off his hands as his private forces systematically neutralized the attackers.
Inside the limousine, Madeline crawled to the door, her eyes wide with shock. She expected Jax to be cowering in fear. Instead, she watched him stand like a commander on a battlefield, completely untouched by the violence around him.
"Clear!" the lead operator shouted, kneeling on one knee before Jax. "The attackers belong to the ironworks faction, loyal to Vivian's family. They wanted to ensure you never made it to the Vance estate, sir."
"Clean up the street," Jax commanded coldly. "And make sure the media reports this as a freak traffic accident. I don't want Vivian knowing who handled this."
"Yes, Sovereign Lord," the operator replied, disappearing into the darkness just as quickly as he had arrived.
Jax turned back to the limousine and offered his hand to Madeline. She took it, her fingers trembling slightly, though she tried her best to maintain her ice-cold composure. He pulled her out of the wrecked vehicle just as a second, identical backup limousine from the Vance Group pulled up to the scene.
"Who were those men, Jax?" Madeline demanded the moment they were safely inside the new vehicle. Her sharp eyes were fixed on his face, trying to read the man behind the mask. "Those weren't street thugs. And those men who saved us... they called you Sovereign Lord."
"They are people who owe me their lives, Madeline," Jax said smoothly, adjusting his collar as if nothing had happened. "I told you, I am a doctor. I have saved many powerful people. Some of them choose to pay their debts with loyalty."
Madeline didn't look completely convinced, but she didn't press further. She knew that right now, she needed him. "We have to go straight to the Vance family mansion. My uncle Thomas has called an emergency board meeting. He knows about the arrest, and he's using it to claim that I am bringing shame to the family name to disqualify me from the inheritance."
"Then let's not keep your uncle waiting," Jax said, a cold smile playing on his lips.
The limousine sped through the city gates and entered the sprawling, heavily guarded Vance estate. The mansion was a fortress of wealth, filled with marble pillars and priceless artwork. As Jax and Madeline walked through the grand double doors, they were immediately met by a wall of hostile faces.
Seven older men in expensive tailored suits sat around a massive mahogany conference table. At the head of the table sat Thomas Vance, Madeline’s greedy uncle.
"Madeline!" Thomas shouted, slamming his hand on the table the moment they entered. "What is the meaning of this? You bring a street rat, a disgraced criminal into our sacred family home? The news is already broadcasting his arrest for corporate espionage!"
Madeline walked in gracefully, taking her seat at the opposite end of the table. Jax stood right behind her, his posture straight, his expression completely unreadable.
"The charges are false, Uncle Thomas," Madeline said calmly. "Jax is my fiancé. The contract is signed. By the law of my grandfather's will, I am now the rightful chairperson of the Vance Group."
"This marriage is a complete sham!" Thomas roared, his face turning bright red with anger. He pointed a shaking, ring-covered finger at Jax. "Look at him! He wears clothes from a grocery store! He has no money, no status, and no family. The board will never accept this trash as the partner of the Vance Group! We have already voted to suspend your authority!"
The other board members began to murmur in agreement, throwing hateful, disgusted looks at Jax.
Jax didn't say a word. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his small, unbranded black smartphone. It was connected to a private satellite network that only top-tier global leaders could access. He typed a single command onto the screen: *Identify Thomas Vance’s primary offshore assets and prepare a total liquidation order.*
"You think you can just stand there and stay silent?" Thomas mocked, seeing Jax look at his phone. "You are a parasite, Jax! Tomorrow, my allies at the grand corporate auction will buy out your ex-wife's remaining shares, merge our companies, and force Madeline out of her seat permanently. You can't stop us. You have nothing!"
Just as Thomas finished his boastful speech, his own phone rang loudly, breaking the tension in the room.
Thomas frowned and answered it, snapping into the receiver. "What? I'm in the middle of a crucial board meeting!"
"Sir! We have a massive crisis!" his chief financial officer screamed through the speaker so loudly that the entire room could hear. "The global anonymous investor, the Sovereign Lord of the Drake Syndicate , just pulled all financial backing from your private accounts! Your personal bank cards are frozen! Your offshore funds have been blocked by international banking security!"
Thomas froze. His face went from bright red to a ghostly, sickly white. "What? That's impossible! The Sovereign Lord doesn't even know who I am! Why would he freeze my funds?"
"We don't know, sir! But the bank said the order came directly from the supreme black-card holder himself! If we don't get that money back in twenty-four hours, your entire private estate goes bankrupt!"
The phone went dead. The entire room descended into a suffocating, terrified silence. All the board members looked at Thomas in absolute horror.
Thomas slowly looked up, his hands shaking so badly he dropped his phone onto the table. He looked around the room, his eyes finally landing on Jax, who was casually putting his black phone back into his pocket.
"No... no, it's a coincidence," Thomas whispered to himself, sweat pouring down his forehead. "A worthless brat like you couldn't possibly..."
Jax took one step forward, leaning over the table. He looked directly into Thomas’s panicked eyes.
"The world is a very unpredictable place, Mr. Vance," Jax said, his voice smooth and terrifyingly calm. "Sometimes, the people you think have nothing are the ones who hold your entire life in their hands."
Thomas backed his chair away, his breath hitching. Before he could speak, the grand doors of the meeting room were kicked open again.
A group of elite corporate lawyers dressed in black suits marched into the room, led by a man holding a red folder. He walked straight past Thomas and stopped in front of Jax, bowing deeply.
"Sovereign Lord," the lead lawyer announced, his voice echoing through the stunned silence of the room. "We have successfully acquired fifty-one percent of the ironworks faction's debt. Your ex-wife's family business is now technically under your control, but we have a problem. Vivian has just signed a secret agreement with an international assassin guild to eliminate you before sunrise."
