Chapter Eight Sheriff Lee cleared off the desk that had once belonged to Jack Cogent and placed the important papers in the cardboard box. The papers had been the lifeblood of the Secrest case. Since Cogent's dismissal, the other officers had minimized the case. The Sheriff had construed enough evidence to implicate Vaughn Patton as being responsible for the murder. The Sheriff considered the case as 'wrapped up'. Therefore, he didn't have to contend with the new investigator that he had hired, sticking his nose into the case.
