Cogent put on his usual strong pot of black coffee and got ready for work. If he could, he planned to see Jim Bruex today. Bruex was representing Vaughn Patton. Cogent had to clue Bruex in if he was going to get Patton cleared in the Secrest case. Bruex was the most sought-after attorney in New Orleans. He had won more cases than any other lawyer in town. Vaughn Patton's family knew this, and hence they chose him to represent their son. The Patton family was affluent and well known in the area. That didn't matter in this town, though. Sheriff Lee was a snake. He and Judge Orton were the best of friends. This was a well-known fact. If Bruex was going to win the case, he would have to request that another judge try the case.
