Chapter Twelve The plan was for Lorn and Kiri to take Suzy into Bagnell while Art flew back in the aircar parked out on the ice of Mirror Lake. None of them had anything to pack, so there was no need to delay. They stepped out of the cabin door. Art turned to lock it. In that moment of silence, as Art placed his palm against the biometer panel, Lorn heard a faint sound in the forest on the other side of Suzy—a sound he’d heard once before: the skittering sound of metallic legs sliding through snow. “Get down!” he yelled as he leaped off the porch. He landed in the snow and went flat on his stomach, bringing his rifle to bear on the forest on the other side of Suzy, sighting between the vehicle’s wheels. He caught the faintest glimpse of movement. It was enough. He squeezed the trigger.
