Chapter 57: Monster Nest

The next day.

We manage to hide in the deserted area and mixed ourselves with the people living in the city afterward.

Opposite what we saw yesterday. The city is crowded and lots of people are walking in the street.

Just last night this eight-block was a completely deserted area. Are they having dinner together that night?

“We need to move and find a kid who saw the monster before and gather some information. We need to hurry up.”

Taki said and turned her glance to Yumi and me I who walking slowly.

“Let’s have breakfast first before heading there. We missed dinner last night, I'm very hungry right now.”

“Yumi is right, I want some fried chicken right now.”

“Friend chicken? Umm… I’m also hungry and people don’t seem to notice that were foreigners to this city. I guess we can go and grab some food.”

Heading to the market area. We buy food to feed our dying stomach. Yumi and I happy chow down the food.

I’m sad that there was no fried chicken available. Still, I’m happy to have some meat this morning. Taki meanwhile has some bread instead.

We seat in the corner of the fountain while we enjoy eating our food.

“I wonder who is that black-haired guy last night? What is he doing in that place?”

“His name is Nightshade.”

“That’s a weird name.”

“It is but he is very strong. He grabbed my sword with his bare hand and attack me. I can tell that he's not an ordinary adventurer.”

“If that’s true, then maybe he has the same goal as us. Maybe he came here to capture the monsters too.”

Yumi sand takes a sip on her juice drink.

It's not impossible that he came here to do the same job. Anyone can take the same quest in the adventurer guild.

Or maybe not… Remembering he keeps on asking me questions and after I sincerely answered him. His attitude tone down and became nice.

Still, we miss our opportunity in capturing lots of monsters because of him.

“We capture three monsters yesterday. Where did it go?”

After I asked. Taki pulled a card from her pocket and show it to us. Inside the card was the mouse monster we encounter yesterday. Yumi and I were amazed and look at it with a gleaming smile.

“Looking on the mouse closely… I think it's quite cute.”

“So cute.”

“Don't be fooled with their appearance. Monsters are still monsters. Monsters bring disaster to any place in the human world. This item is called capture cards it's commonly used to capture fainted monsters. The only that I’m worried about was the number of the monsters. I bring ten of these cards. But judging on what we encountered yesterday. I can say that there are more than 20 of them.”

“What?!”

“... I think there about hundreds of these mouse monsters roaming around this city.”

“That’s horrible… And according to the quest poster, the knight in this city is not doing anything about it. Something shady is happening in this city.”

While seating we saw. A man announcing in the center of the part. It gathers crowd lots of attention.

“Everyone! Our hero! Knight Ironhead defeats another monster. The city will continuously remain its peaceful days. Glory to the hero of Motorstoke… Glory to Knight Ironhead!”

Knight Ironhead… I don’t really understand the knight. I always think adventurers are wearing those heavy-looking metals and flying with their dragons. The knight defeats a monster. Then the poster is lying?

“What’s happening? Something is off.”

Taki then put her finger to her forehead and think thoroughly.

“The knight defeats a monster to maintain the peace of this city, but the poster is saying that the knight doest care on the reports. We need to hurry up and meet the person who made this request.”

We then set off and follow the address in the poster. We arrived in the fourth block of the city. The area is more like an abandoned town and people look starving. People here look pitiful. The place was dirty and stinky.

I guess, this place is what they called a slump.

“This place is a mess. There is almost no roof and the wall is breaking. Are you sure this is the place?”

Asked Yumi to Taki whose checking the address.

“This is definitely the place… Knock! Knock! Is there somebody here!”

Taki called out and knock on the door.

The door opened and an old man appeared. We look down on us with glaring eyes.

“This is not a place for kids like your selves get lost already!”

He then closed the door with a slamming sound.

“That man might have a bad day… Let's try again.”

I said and as I turned my glance beside me. The pink-haired girl gets fired up and furious. Yumi clenched her fists and knock on the door continuously.

“What's wrong with you! You're the one who asked this question! We’re here to hell you good damn craps!”

Taki and I panicked at Yumi’s attitude. The old man earlier also got frightened and let us in.

The old man apologizes to us and his wife looks very nice. She serves us tea and some snacks.

“I’m sorry to my husband earlier. He’s just doesn’t like having visitors. But I really appreciate that you came here to do the request. It's a special request and the one playing for reward was the adventurer guild itself.”

I put my hand on the snack and before I get my hands on it. I notice five small kids looking at us behind the door. With drool on their mouth there look at the snacks.

I feel like I can understand the reason why the father doesn’t like visitors going to their house.

I get the snacks and walked to the kids. I give them the snacks and patted their head.

“We already eat before we came here you can have it all instead.”

“Really?! Thank you very much, big sister!”

“Thank you!”

Taki and Yumi made a smile seeing my action and give me a thumbs up.

The mother got troubled and asked.

“Is it really okay for my child to have your snacks?”

“It's okay… We’re plenty full already. More importantly, we need to gather some information. Why asked the adventurers and not the knights assigned in this city.”

“You three are really kind-hearted then… Well…”

“It's because they don’t care about us at all!”

The voice is from the entrance. A girl appeared with an annoyed expression on her face. She then turned her glance on us and said.

“... Is this the adventurers? Are they making fun of us? These children will be killed when they face those giant monsters.”

Yumi stood up and look face to face with the girl.

“I know that you're one of the monster's victims but your attitude is rubbing me the wrong way.”

We then held Yumi down.

“Well, sorry Yumi just got excited… We may not look like it but we are adventurers. In fact, we acted three of those monsters last night upon arriving. We take this quest because we know we’re able to complete this.”

The girl that shows up calmed down.

“My name is Mew. I’m the girl that saw the monsters before. I don’t have much information but I can show you the place where I last saw the monsters.”

The girl then exits. The three of us have no choice but to follow the girl. We arrived in the third block on the back of the huge factories.

Mew pointed outa an abandoned factory.

“That is the place where the monsters keep appearing. This is the monster's nest.”

“If the people here knew its monster's location. Then, why nobody is killing it?”

“Most of the people living here don’t have the ability to use magic or fight them. Despite knowing the nest we can't do anything about it. Just thinking that makes me feel disgusted with ourselves. We’re called defectives people… We don’t have any ability to use magic or skill. We are just laborers until the day we died. I would like to know and venture into the world. But it's impossible to weak person like me.”

“No! You should give up on your dreams! I also have a dream of traveling the vast world. I’m also a weak girl from a small town and have no idea of magic. I know you can do it just don’t give up!”

I said to cheer up Mew.

Mew just averted her eyes and turned her back away.

“I’m already turning 17. Different from you. I’m not that strong-willed. All of you should be careful. I need to go to work. I’ll leave the rates with all of you.”

Mew then leave us in front of the abandoned factory.

It makes me sad knowing that she give up on her dream. For now, I can't do anything about it. We are different I won't give up on mine. I’ll go move forward.

The three of us entered the abandoned factory and then there. We saw a giant mouse monster three times bigger than the normal ones.

“So big?”

“Is this the mother?!”

Looking at its face. The monster is…

“Crying?”
