The Unexpected Move

Chapter 6 ~Selina~ Six years later, “Heaven, please don't let anything happen to him; he is all I have and I need him to be safe.” I kept mouthing this word as I ran back to the house. I wasn't even moved by the heaviness of the grocery bag I was carrying; all I wanted was just to get home. The burden on my chest relieved a bit when I saw the familiar blue door. I increased my pace, and as I got to the entrance, I pushed the door open, entered with heavy panting. “How is he? Is he okay," I flung the grocery bag to a corner and rushed to the dimly lit corner My master was seated on a mat, and on her lap was my son, Sage. Master Lin glanced up at me and gave me a relieved smile. “He is better now; I already made him a new batch of the concoction, and it should suffice him for about 3 months,” she answered. I let out a huge breath of relief and stepped forward to carry him to the room. Sage was born with a weak heart, and due to the struggle we went through before we got to Master Lin, his condition was already severe, and we could only manage it with Master Lin's help. I gently carried him off the cold floor and went to the inner room to place him on a mattress. I returned back outside, and the cold gaze of my master met me. I sighed, not because I was tired, but but rather because I knew the next thing she was about to say. “What do you think you are doing, Selina? Will you stand behind and watch your son die?” She blasted at me, her voice shaking due to the influence of old age. I placed my two hands behind me, eyes glued to the floor. “When will you let the world know who you truly are? That is the only way you can save your son; you are now a doctor, and you shouldn't forget that. How will you save people if you couldn't save your son?” Her voice shook with raw pain, making the air seem heavier than it already was. I felt bad… so bad that I couldn't even stare at her. “It might sound selfish of me, but that's the only way I can protect him, you know that,” I finally summoned the courage to answer her. Yes, I studied modern medicine and became very good at it, coupled with the previous knowledge of traditional medicine that I learned from Master Lin, but I have a major fear: I once got a call from a burner phone, and the only thing the person said was, “If you practice medicine, you will not only learn of secrets that would ruin you, it will also take everyone you love away from you.” I couldn't get the person's name or location; the only thing I got from the person was that warning. “I know you are thinking about that threat again,” Master Lin called me back to the present. I ran my tongue over my chapped lips, and my eyes locked with hers. “What if what that person said was true?” I asked. Master Lin looked me in the eyes and countered, “What if that person already saw your potential? I mean, you could heal people that everyone couldn't. I have only been taking the glory instead, and you and I know that.” I stared at her with hesitation. Master Lin's gaze softened; she staggered to my front and gently held my arm. “Please, save people, save your son.” That was all I needed to let go of the doubt in my chest. I pulled her into a hug and poured out my frustration in tears. She rubbed my back, urging me to let it out. I cried till I didn't have energy to do so again. “I will submit my CV online. Maybe I can also let Dr. Tonia know that I will be looking for medical job posts.” Master Lin nodded and cheered me on, “That’s what I expect from you. You have always been strong, my girl.” I smiled and nodded. I excused myself and went back to check on Sage; he looked very peaceful in his sleep. My heart melted in a puddle, and I couldn't resist the urge to place a peck on his cheek in his sleep. He twisted uncomfortably in his sleep, and I quickly took a step back. I went to the chair by the window and brought out my old laptop. It's time to apply. I had two clinics in mind; both are the biggest in the world. I drew up my CV, made a digital copy, and began the application process. I finished in about an hour and made a call across to Dr. Tonia. As soon as I made my intention known to her, she went silent on the phone. I knew she was being skeptical like me because over the years, she and Master Lin had been my only family; my parents never even tried to look around for me. In fact, Diana and Edwin really got married, and I got that information from Diana’s social media page. “Are you sure about this?” She finally spoke up, and I shrugged. “Not like I can run from this forever. Also, Sage's health is declining and I need to get him good medical help,” she hummed and I could also mentally picture her nodding in agreement. “Alright, I will check around and get back to you, probably tomorrow,” with this, we exchanged pleasantries and ended the call. I yawned and stretched my sore joints. I dragged myself to the empty space beside Sage, I fell heavily on the bed and instantly fell asleep. The tiredness from the day work really sunk into my bone that i didn't even wake up until mid-day of the following day. As soon as I set my eyes on the wall clock, I yelled out in surprise. I quickly wrapped a shirt around my body and ran to my laptop. They said I was going to get a response in about 15 hours, and that has already passed. I felt sudden chills in my body. I rubbed my palms against each other, and then I opened the screen of the laptop. I made a silent prayer before opening my mail. Boldly written at the top of the email were two acceptance letters. I screamed out in excitement, “Yaay!!! I got accepted, oh my goodness!” I palmed my lips. Happiness was an understatement for how I felt. My noise alerted the people in the house; it only took a few seconds for Master Lin to rush in with Sage in her arms. “What is the excitement all about?” She asked, partially guessing the reason behind the happiness. I showed her the email I just got, and she quickly hugged me. “See. I told you. Where is the location?” It had never really come to my mind before. I quickly checked the entire content, and on the bottom side was the location. The smile on my face fell, and I rushed to check the second acceptance letter. Same location. LOS VEGAS
