Chapter 1: Counterpunch
"You're turning 18 in a few days, son. Do you have any plans in mind?"
I stared at him blankly. He was such a skilled actor, playing the role of a good father that didn't suit him at all.
Pretending as if he didn't exist, I was about to leave. Being here was just a waste of my time. His presence was toxic, poisoning me from within.
"You should have at least answered my question before turning away. You're being disrespectful, son."
I turned to face him, and it was too late to hold my tongue.
"Respect is earned by noble people, not by assholes."
"Lawrence Keith!"
He addressed me by my full, repulsive name. That meant he was getting angry, and strangely, it satisfied me.
"If you have nothing else to say, then I'll leave, Mr. Mores."
I emphasized his last name, emphasizing the distance between us, before heading towards the fully furnished antique door in his library.
I had wasted two minutes of my life in that room, talking to the most unwelcome guest. Yes, you heard it right. He was no longer my father, the one who held my hand when I took my first steps. If it weren't for her, I would never have let our paths cross, not even on his last breath.
I walked past the maid cleaning the living room, grabbed my keys from my pocket, and drove away. I needed to breathe in fresh air, to release the suffocating atmosphere I had inhaled in that place.
I focused on the road, but my thoughts were consumed by the tragedy that happened five years ago. Every time I saw my father, every detail of that incident flashed back incessantly. I was snapped back to reality when my phone suddenly vibrated. I fumbled for it, and just in time, I answered the call.
"Where are you, dude? The class is starting in five minutes."
"Oh, s**t!"
I threw my phone in frustration, not even bothering to end the call. How on earth could I have forgotten about my first day of school?
In a rush, I hurried back to my place to gather my things and raced towards the school at full speed.
As I pulled into the parking lot, I noticed a kid hopping into the parking space I had my eyes on.
"Seriously, does she want to get herself hurt?"
Time was ticking, and this kid was only prolonging my lateness. Despite my arrogant demeanor, I still valued my education. Irritation grew within me as I continued honking my car horn. The kid remained seated on the ground, her back turned towards me.
"What on earth is her problem?"
Her presence was getting under my skin.
I stepped out of my car, determined to teach her a lesson.
"You there!"
My voice carried a coldness and anger that I couldn't contain any longer. I felt the urge to confront her physically, to give her a taste of her own medicine.
I moved to reach for her shoulder, but before I could, she swiftly turned around and delivered a forceful counter punch to my left cheek.
"Argh!"
The impact left me feeling slightly dizzy, and I could already anticipate the mark it would leave on my face. How could someone so small possess such strength in her hands?
"Damn this kid. Is she the daughter of a renowned boxer or something? It's preposterous!"
I shot her a fierce glare, battling against the temptation to be captivated by her deep green eyes and refusing to appreciate their beauty.
"Oops!"
She exclaimed as if she had simply bumped into something, and then swiftly made her escape. She disappeared from sight with such speed that I couldn't keep up with her in a mere second.
"Argh! This kid is giving me a splitting headache. Where did she come from? I'll make sure she pays for what she did. I will make her regret this day and beg for her life."
