chapter 4

Daphne settled into the bed of her room in the shabby motel on the far east side of Raleigh city. She tried to get as much sleep as possible; she had paid for the night, but she would be leaving way earlier. This was just too close to The Blood Moon pack. The last thing she wanted was to get caught and dragged back to the Blood Moon pack. Caleb would upgrade the security, and she wouldn’t be able to run away again. This was her only shot to escape. She sighed as she looked out the window, remembering the day she had first met him. Her birth pack, the Moonstone pack, was not as large as Caleb’s. They owned two large apartment buildings at the edge of Charlotte City. Her father was the alpha of the Moonstone pack before he passed away from an illness. Her mother mated with the new alpha, Desmond, who was cold to her; she could tell he hated her and her birth father. After her mother died, it all became worse. She was nothing more than a slave to the alpha’s family—Desmond and his new mate and pups. “I should have just gone rogue since,” she muttered to herself. The only reason it had taken her so long to make this decision was because of her dormant wolf. Daphne’s wolf was of Alpha spirit, just like her father’s and mother’s. But when she was of age to transform, she never did. Till now. Daphne had never once transformed, not even during a full moon. Which made her even more of an outcast than she already was. Packs considered werewolves who couldn’t call out their wolves as defective and useless. Daphne’s wolf whined inside her. Even though she had never transformed, her wolf was still as active as any other inside her. She had finally run away. No more confinement for her and her wolf; they would be free. She dozed off in a slight smile that faded to a sorrowful smile as she remembered Caleb’s face while she screamed at him earlier. ‘Why did he look so confused? I could never understand that man.’ --- It was four A.M in the morning when Daphne’s eyes shot open; she had overslept. She stood up and stretched as she looked around; it was such an odd feeling. The small cramped room and uncomfortable bed seemed to give her so much peace and the feeling of freedom. Her room back at the luxurious Blood Moon headquarters might have been large and luxurious, but it had been filled with nothing but bad memories. She recalled the day she had arrived there; Caleb had welcomed her stepfather and his escorts. He was just as cold and dismissive to them as he always was to everyone else. ‘At least Caleb was consistent with that much,’ she thought now. Back then, that was Daphne’s first time meeting him. … Daphne had been shocked and enraged to find out that she had been the bargaining chip Desmond used to secure an alliance with the blood moon pack, well known as a cold killer and unfreindly Alpha, the crulest and most powerful Alpha around. She trembled at the thought of meeting him, but to see Caleb give such an attitude to even her stepfather shocked her, she couldn’t help but find joy in the way her stepfather stammered and fiddled like a little boy infront of Caleb. By the time Desmond was leaving she had completely pleased by Caleb’s humiliation of Desmond that she was unconsciously already fond of him. “What are you smiling at?” Caleb asked in such an irritated voice that it wiped the smile andy little feeling of comfort she was getting - straight out of Daphne. He turned to her, his large and muscular frame suddenly becoming obvious to her. She felt she and small. He seemed to pause for a minute, looking at her “Noah, show her to her room” he called to a tall and skinny man standing at the corner of the room. Noah nodded and edged Daphne to follow him. Daphne impulsively walked down the halls in awe ‘an entire building just for the headquarters !? That’s half of my pack.’ Daphne was taken up to the penthouse and shown her room, it was an overly decorated room, filled with so many pink objects Daphne thought she was going to drown in the color of she stepped in. “And the room opposite yours is Caleb’s,” Noah said with a bright smile “He comes off a bit rude but he’s really sweet once you get to know him.” Noah took a step into her room first, noting her reluctance to go in. “Where are your things?” he asked. “I have nothing,” she said plainly. Noah fell silent for a moment. “Okay then we will get you things tomorrow. I am Noah by the way. The beta. Welcome to the Blood Moon pack.” he smiled, making the dark circles beneath his eyes even more prominent. … Daphne yawned as she lifted her bag unto her back, ready to leave. She — Caleb sat in his office, his feet rappping on the floor. He tried to look calm and collected as always but his anxiousness was obvious. A knock on the door called his attantion “Come in” Noah opened the office door, followed in by Carlos. Caleb’s face was urried on in papper work and files. “Yes go on?” Caleb said as he speed read through another document. “We didn’t find any trace of her sir. I think she might have left the east side if town as well.” Caleb paused his work. Taking a moment to take in what Noah said “So there were also no signs that she injured from the fall off that building right.” “Yes” Noah nodded. Caleb’s shoulder lowered in releive, he surprised himself trealising he was tense about that. “So what are the curent plans to find her?” Noah fell silent for a moment. “Yes? Get it out.” Caleb said impatiently. “Alpha caleb,” Noah said nervously “Why don’t we let her go?” Carlos - eyes wide open - slow turned his face to Noah, wondering if he had gone mad. Caleb looked at his in astnoishment, disbelief and what looked like a little anger “What do you mean let her go?” Noah stammered “I-I just mean it would not be effcient to go looking for her. She’s probably too far gone.” “What are you saying” Caleb glared at him, his chest feeling umcomfortable by the converstaion. “I-” Noah paused “You should find a new mate.” Carlos took a few steps back ‘I’m not getting into this’ Caleb looked lost in thought for a moment “No, I don’t want another mate” he slightly shoock his head,” “You don’t even like her.” Noah blurted out- regretting it immediately. Caleb raised an eyebrow “I d-” he paused, thinking again, his chest seemed to feel more and more stuffy. “When she was here she waited and waited for you to talk to her” Noah said, he couldn;t help himself “You secluded her from everybody and then you ignored her too, I don’t know what she did to make you hate her but if you do then why bother to bring her back” Caleb looked sad, he remained silent for a moment “I don’t hate her…” he didn;t know what to sya after that. “Do she think I hated her?” He asked more to himself than noah. He wanted to defend himself but looking back at his memories now- of everytime she would come knocking on his office door where he spent most of his day, and he would send her away. ‘Why did I do that?’ Noah looke in amusmet at Calebs expressions, ‘was he not even aware of how she felt?’ “I’ll tell the team to stop the search.” Noah said as he slowly shifted towards the door, figuring he needed to gove Caleb some space. “No,” Caleb said, calling him back. “Sorry?” Noah asked. “We still need to find her” he said ‘I hope she is safe too’ he thought. ‘B-but, why?“ Noah said in an interogative tone. “Why not just get a new mate, Sir she doesn’t want to stay- she will just run away again.” “She…” caleb interpted Noah, looking hesitant himself Noah paused glancing to carlors, He had never seen such a look on Caleb’s face ‘Could it be.. Does he have feeling’s for her?’ Noah shook his head, leaning in to hear what Caleb was about to say. Caleb sighed, leaning back into his seat “She has my child, that is reason enough.” “Okay sir” Noah nodded. “Yer sir” Carlos said with a cheeky smile on his face ‘that is not the reason, is it.’
