Evangeline POV
“How’s your leg feeling?” The voice of Nate pulled me out of thoughts. It was only eight in the morning but still, I had no energy to move let alone look up. My glaze clearly stayed on the colored items in the bowl as I twisted my work around making no effort to eat. “Haven’t had your coffee yet?”
“No.” I managed to speak before I pushed myself off the chair to figure out the coffee machine. Forcing myself to look at something other than the colored fruit in my bowl.
“It hurts but at least I have the boot on now.” Nate laughed at my pain as he rolled his eyes before hopping up on my chair that I just got off of.
“Maybe next time you won’t try to jump out of a building.” He pointed out as I turned on the water, letting it warm up a little before I could get water for the coffee.
“Go read a book, Nate.” I hissed as I burned my hand on the hot water that warmed up entirely way too quickly.
“You have interesting comebacks, my love.” Kevin spoke as he entered the kitchen, walking directly towards me, helping me with the coffee.
“You have an interest face but no one’s talking about that.”
He rolled his eyes as he checked my hand for any burn marks before holding it in his. He read the confusion on my face before smiling.
“Please, I’m cute.”
“Yeah,” I scuffed laughing at the fact that he was trying to felix on me, “In your dreams.”
“Someone sounds like they’re lying to themselves.” Kevin stated. He was right, he was cute but he also didn’t need to know that.
“So that means no escaping anytime soon.” Nate pointed out, bringing us back to the conversation that we were once on, before taking a bite out of my fruit earning a glare for taking a piece of watermelon and not a blueberry.
“Please, if I wanted to bad enough I would be out of here. They wouldn’t find me.”
“Than why are you running.”
Silence filled the air as I secretly glanced over to Kevin hoping he wouldn’t notice. I was a fool for thinking I could get away with it but he slowly put his hands up in the air.
“I think that’s a sign that I should leave now. Sorry loves, I felt the burn and wanted to make sure you were okay.”
I smiled softly at him as his eyes focused on me. My heart hurt from not being able to tell him everything. In that moment I wanted to tell him everything but I knew I needed to protect myself. I was just trying to be careful.
“Thank you for that.” I spoke softly as he left the room. He sent one last smile before leaving the room to just Nate and I like he was never there to begin with.
“Evangeline?” Nate questioned carefully, pulling me out of my glaze and back into reality.
“It’s not that I’m in danger, I just don’t trust them. So I’m trying to go unnoticed and I’m trying to figure out where they will and won’t look. What bridges they will cross and which ones they won’t cross.”
Glancing out the window, I studied the trees as I took a sip of the coffee before stealing my breakfast back from Nate. I picked the blueberries out and placed them in a new plate for Nate to eat. For some reason, he loved them. No wonder I never trusted him before.
“So you know you’re not in danger, but you want to run? Why don’t you trust them?” Nate questioned trying to figure out where I was coming from.
“Nate, I don’t trust anyone. It doesn’t matter if they’re beast or human. You can get further in life that way.”
Nate went silent for a few moments as if he was scared to ask a question. I didn’t make a move to force him but waited to see what he was going to do.
“Evangeline, is it because of what happened in your past?” I thought about what he was referring too and started to wonder what he knew about the subject. Nate, who see this, decided to take it a step further. “Your parents.”
“Not at all. It’s just humanity is known to lie and I haven’t decided if beasts are like humans in that department.”
“Evangeline, I’m sorry for always being mean to you. Throwing what you have done and what has been done to you in the past in your face. I guess it was easier to do that than it would to understand you.”
A laugh escaped my mouth as Nate explained where he was coming from.
“I guess I am a really hard person to understand.”
“So are we end this together? If you ever need to run away, I’ll go no matter what.” Nate held out his hand like you would if you were making a deal. I took a step forward before holding my hand out, a smile making its way to my face.
“Always and forever, Nate.”
Little did she know, Kevin stood outside the door listening in. He couldn’t bring himself to leave but he hated himself for staying. He knew what he needed to do and he wasn’t afraid to fight for her.
