{Melody’s POV}
I woke up early this morning, stretching out before sliding my legs off the side of the bed and carefully placing my bare feet against the cold wooden floor. I gasped, lifting them up, the bitter cold chilling me to the bone, before gently placing them back down, and getting up from my bed, making my way over to my duffle bag. I pulled out all of the stuff I needed to get ready, and sat down at the vanity in the bathroom, closing the door behind me. My friend, and coworker, Sandra has been nice enough to allow me to stay with her ever since I caught my ex husband Trever and my ex best friend Veronica together. Because of them, my entire life had flipped upside down. I was heartbroken, Trevor truly was my world.. my everything.. he’d never so much as said an unkind word to me, but when I caught them.. He lost control. He beat me so severely that I still walk with a slight limp. Though most of my injuries have healed, my right leg has a bit longer to go before it’s completely healed. My limp is mostly unnoticeable, I’ve worked hard to hide it, as I didn’t want to draw any attention to myself when I finally go back home.
When I was ten my mother passed away, her mother, my grandmother dragged me away from the only home I’d ever known, forcing me to leave my father behind. She took me back to her home town, a large city that lacked every natural element, nothing but cement and skyscrapers as far as the eye could see. I missed our cabin on the lake.. it was the only place I ever truly felt safe, and ever since I was taken from my father, I’d been daydreaming of going back home. When I got married to Trevor, I had all but given up on that dream, but now.. now it’s finally time.
I called my father a few months ago, explaining my divorce to him, leaving out the details of the cheating and the assault, and asked if I could come stay with him until I can find a house back in our small hometown. He agreed, telling me how excited he was to see me, though, we haven’t seen one another since my grandmother took me away. We’ve talked on the phone every once in a while, and we texted, but other than that, we’d not had any other contact.
My stuff was already out in the back of my truck, all that was left was my duffle bag, with my makeup, some clothes, and my soaps. I finished getting ready, before packing up the last of my belongings. I looked in the floor length mirror, my eyes scanning over me. I had on a white, a line dress. It went down to my mid calves, and hugged my curves nicely, while keeping me completely covered. It was long sleeve, and had pleating down the top. I looked elegant, but casual enough. I came from a decently well off family, so it was something that I felt would neither stand out, or be too lack luster.
I had my hair pulled up in a braided bun, with pieces of hair pulled out around it that I curled up giving it a messier look. I did a light makeup, and finished it all off with a pair of white heels. I smiled at myself, trying my best to channel the courage to do this.. to go back home.. to reconnect with my father. “You can do this Mel.. don’t lose your courage now!” I tried to persuade myself, but ended up feeling like an i***t. I sighed, quickly grabbing my bag and walking out of the room. I made my way downstairs where a groggy Sandra stood waiting for me. Her blonde hair was done up in a messy bun, and her pjs were wrinkled.
I giggled as I made my way to her side, pulling her into a hug. “Thank you so much, for everything!” I smiled.
“Anytime!” She smiled back. “I mean that! Anytime you want to come back, you just call me!” She said, pointing her finger in my face.
“Yes ma’am!” I giggled, turning to the door. “I’ll let you know when I get there.” I assured her.
“You better! And be safe!” She yelled after me as I walked out of the house and got into my truck. I started it up, before driving down the slightly familiar roads.
It took a while but I finally came up on the bridge that led into our town. I noticed two men standing there, one on either side of the road. When I pulled up they flagged me down. “State your business.” One of them snarled at me before he actually looked over me. His eyes scanning me up and down.
“I’m here to see my father..” I mutterer, anxiety prickling up my spine, I looked back at him, realizing that he looked familiar, but I just couldn’t place it.
“Who is your father?” He asked, his tone a bit softer now.
“Mason Fields.” I replied, and I watched as his eyes went wide.
“Melody?” He asked, and I nodded. “It’s me, Daren!” He smiled, and that’s when I pieced it back together. Daren was one of my best friends when I was a child, we used to do everything together, from fishing, to swimming, to hiking, and getting into all kinds of trouble.
“Daren! It’s so good to see you!” I smiled stepping out of my truck and giving him a hug.
He lifted me up and spun me around. “It’s been ages!” He chuckled. “What are you doing here?” He asked, his eyes once again scanning over me, this time as if looking for something.
“I’m moving back to town.” I smiled. “Dad is being kind enough to let me stay with him until I get a place, that way I can go ahead and start working.” I said, flattening back down my dress.
“Really? That’s great! You’ll have to come out for drinks with me and some of our old pals one night soon!” He replied, smiling down at me.
I nodded. “That sounds really nice actually, just let me know when, you know where dad lives right? Maybe bring everyone up and we can all hang out by the lake. I’ll have to ask dad first, but I don’t think he’d mind.”
“Sounds great! I’ll let you know when we go out, and we’ll try to plan a lake day!” He smiled, helping me back into my truck. I waved goodbye as I made my way down the winding road that leads back home.
