Chapter Seventeen

I hadn’t slept that well in ages. I have always struggled with sleep but last night I slept right the way through to this morning. Well apart from when I was woken up by Alex knocking on my door as she was scared. I always felt that she was more sensitive than she likes people to think she is. I was so sure she wouldn’t talk to me ever again after finding out that she was my mate and actually reject me. That was the last thing I would ever want her to do but I have never seen her that mad before. I rolled gently on to my side and saw that Alex was still sleeping. Damn, she was hot even when she was sleeping. I wanted to run my hands through her hair and keep her beside for the rest of our lives. She moaned as she swiped my hand as it had found it’s way to her face and was currently stroking her cheek. I frowned as I suddenly remembered why she had come to my room last night. She had told me that she had a nightmare and that everyone she cared for was dead by her Uncle. I need to find him and stop him before he hurts my Alex. “She is scared, Ethan,” Rowan whined in my head. “ I know she is but what can we do? I only found out who orchestrated the attack yesterday,” I moan. “We need to find him and destroy him for our mate’s safety,” Rowan growled pacing back and forth in my head. “ I agree totally but first we need to keep Alex safe,” I agreed him before moving off the bed and headed to the bathroom. I heard Alex groan and move on the bed when I was finishing in the bathroom. I don’t know how she will be this morning after she found out that everyone knew she was my mate before her. I forgot to bring my clothes into the bathroom when I got up. I only had a towel wrapped around my body. I paused and took a deep breath as I opened the bathroom door and entered my bedroom. I tried not looking towards Alex as I went into my closet. I grabbed a pair of boxers and pulled them on. I then grabbed a pair of faded blue jeans and pulled them. I turned to walk out of the closet and grabbed a white shirt on my way out. When I walked out of the closet I looked towards the bed hoping that Alex would still be there but she had left. I felt my heart sink that she wasn’t in my bed anymore. I knew she would have to face our situation eventually. I wanted so badly I was willing to wait for everything with her. I don’t care if that makes me look like a weak Alpha but I will not for anything push her into anything she doesn’t want to do. I pulled the shirt on before heading downstairs and walked into the kitchen. I saw Zack, Faith, Lionel and Czarina sitting at the table eating breakfast. I sniffed the air and knew that Alex had left not long ago. I looked at the food that was prepared and my stomach rumbled making everyone burst into laughter. I ignored them as I grabbed a plate and started piling the bacon, sausages and pancakes onto the plate. “Looks like someone had a good night last night,” Zack said once he had recovered from laughing. “We saw Alex run downstairs and out of the door like she didn’t want anyone to see she spent the night here.” I growled making him go back to eating. “I’m sorry dude, last night was eventful but not in the way you think,” I said trying to sound optimistic. “Why was she here anyway?” Faith asked concerned. “I could never get her to stay over my house as she always wants to stay at home.” “She had a disagreement with her parents and she found out that everyone knew she was my mate before she did,” I paused before continuing. “ She didn’t want to go home so I offered her a room here for the night.” I breathed out as they accepted my explanation and didn’t question me. I looked down at the plate of food in front suddenly losing my appetite. I felt dread overtake my entire being as I had a bad feeling like something was going to happen. “We need to go see mate,” Rowan stated in my head. “We need to give her space as she’s still trying to process what she found out yesterday,” I say back to him, making him growl at me. “Did you just growl at me?” “Yes as we need to go to mate now,” Rowan shouted. I didn’t understand my wolf sometimes but he has never lied to me and something must be going on as to why he wants to go see Alex now. “What’s going on?” I asked him as I felt him trying to take over control of my body and shift. “Rowan back down.” “No we need mate now,” Rowan howled. “OK, we will go and talk to her will that calm you down?” I started hoping he will stop fighting me over control. “Only if we go now,” Rowan grumbled submitting defeat but was still pacing in my head. I sighed as I stood up and left my friends sitting at the table looking worried as I walked out the front door. I turned towards Alex house not sure why my wolf was desperate to see our mate. The feeling of dread was getting worse the more I walked towards Alex’s house. If anything happened to her I wouldn’t be able to live without her. As I got nearer to Alexandra’s house Rowan started howling and started literally running back and forth in my head. I started to get worried as he has never acted like this apart from the day rogues attacked. I felt my feet move faster and before I knew it I was running like the devil was chasing me. I suddenly stopped in my tracks at the front of Alex’s house. What lay in front of me was something that had me shaking with rage. The front door to Alex’s house was split in two and splinters of the door was everywhere. I slowly started walking up the steps and smelt the coppery smell of blood. I started to panic as I hadn’t seen Alex yet and I knew she was here. I lifted my nose and sniffed catching her scent everywhere. I was freaking out now as I ran in and out of every room in her house. My imagination was jumping to all sorts of horrible outcomes. I knew she was still alive as I felt the bond still there. “ALEX!” I shouted in the empty house. I fell to my knees feeling utterly hopeless. I knew I should’ve kept her with me this morning. I sniffed the air and her scent was still there was it was going stale. I followed the scent out of the house to the back garden. I was seriously starting to panic now since she wasn’t answering me and I couldn’t pick up a fresh scent. “Let me take over as I can find her faster,” Rowan pleaded in my head, “you need to calm down.” I quietly agreed as I felt myself being pushed to the back of my mind as Rowan took over. I felt the familiar movements of my body change into my wolf. “Rowan we need to hurry in case she’s hurt,” I shout to Rowan as he lifted his nose to the air and picked up on Alex’s scent. Rowan didn’t reply but started pounding his paws into the ground as he sprints into the woods following the scent. It seemed Rowan ran for what seemed like forever before he came to a sudden stop in a clearing on the south of our territory. He whined which made my heart start beating faster in my chest. I swear everyone that was in a five-mile radius of where I was could hear my heartbeat. Rowan quickly gave me power back as we shifted back into my human form and I had full control. I quickly grabbed a pair of shorts that were nearby before I returned to where Alex and her parents were. I saw a man with them that I had never seen before but I felt that he was full of anger and wanted to cause damage. “Ah, I see we are in the presence of the Alpha, welcome to the reunion,” I didn’t know who this guy was, but my blood was boiling and wanting to rip him apart for hurting Alex or her parents. The man smiled before he cleared his throat. “Please let me introduce myself. My name is Dennis and I am Linda’s brother and your mate’s Uncle.” I straightened my back as I slowly walked further to where Alex was standing. “What are you doing on my lands Rogue?” I asked trying to sound powerful. “What sort of Uncle almost kills his niece or his sister?” I challenged him. I saw Dennis smile before he replied. “My dear Alpha, there is a lot that has been hidden from you but I promise you that you will know about them in time. I can tell you that I am not a rogue but recently I have moved into an area that used to be my home once.” Dennis smirked before he turned on his heel and started walking away from us. I was to busy watching Dennis walk away from us that I failed to realise the wolves that had surrounded us. I looked around and there must’ve been about ten rogues that were circling us and snarling. I looked at Sebastian and saw that he was pushing Linda and Alex together and behind him as he snarled back at the wolves circling us. I got into a defensive position and shifted into my wolf when one of the rogues lunged forward bearing its teeth straight for my neck. I just managed to dodge the rogue’s teeth and I managed to get my teeth around his back paw and managed to break it by biting down harder on his back paw. The rogue roared in pain as it limped around before trying to bite my neck. I was faster and locked my jaws around the rogue’s neck and squeezed till the rogue lay lifeless in my mouth. I saw Sebastian fighting with three rogues as the other rogues were surrounding the shewolves. I saw red and threw myself at the rogues that had Alex and her mother up against a tree. I saw that they had shifted into their wolves and were currently trying to fight the rogues off. I howled and flung one of the rogues into the furthest tree and hearing his spine break. The rogues that were near me turned and retreated. I turned towards the rogues that Sebastian was still fighting and I could see he was getting tired. As I started running towards him and the rest of the rogues I heard a scream coming from Alex. I stopped running and saw Linda on the ground blood everywhere. I saw Alex fall to her knees over her mother and pull something from her mother’s stomach. Sebastian roared as he took down the last of the rogues and ran over to where his wife and daughter were on the ground. He shifted as he got to them and pulled Linda to his chest and begging her to hang on. I quickly shifted and put on a pair of shorts before going over to the family. I knelt beside Alex as I looked at the thing that she had pulled from her mother. It was a silver dagger that was coated in wolfs-bane that I could smell. I was disgusted with the move that Dennis and his rogues had done. I was deep in thought when I felt Alex throw herself into my arms sobbing her heart out as her mother’s life slipped away. The silver and wolfs-bane had moved quickly into her system at a fast pace and I knew she didn’t have long after she was stabbed. Sebastian was one of the strongest wolves that I had ever met and now that his mate had died he was broken and the tears came thick and fast. I watched as he rocked his mate’s body in his arms pleading for her to come back to them. I stroked Alex’s hair and rocked her mimicked her dad’s moves with my own with her in my arms. I don’t know if the Bates family will be able to come back from this loss but I know for certain I will do everything in my power to make sure I don’t lose any more innocent pack members. As I held Alex I promised her that I would make this right and protect her with every single bit of me. I was willing to die for her and the rest of my pack.
