‘What are you doing with us?’ Richard said. No one answered him. For a moment Clarissa anticipated they would be taken down to the bunkers, but they were shoved up the stairs in single file, Carol leading the way. Vera pushed Richard ahead of her. Clarissa followed and Merida brought up the rear. Ten treads in, Richard lost his footing on some loose concrete and looked about to topple backwards. Clarissa braced. Carol reacted quickly, grabbing his arm and yanking him forwards behind her. Carol led them into the tower and on into the attic of the north wing. Merida raised her torch. Backlit, they were shoved out onto the balcony. ‘Salvador said to put them in there,’ Vera said, gesturing at the small door. ‘Out here will do,’ Carol said. ‘We can lock the whole wing.’ ‘You’re kidding me
