Risen Chapter 2. Bookstore — Kara walked to the bus stop it was time for her to go to work. Spend some time around new books or old a quiet place where she was always invisible. The bus arrived in a matter of minutes she went to the back of the bus again the place she always preferred. Music filling her ears and the hoodie covering her head she sat there filling more invisible as someone could ever be the bus began to move. One more stop and she’d be at work safe from the world outside. She waited impatiently on her seat feeling like the bus was moving at a really slow pace. Finally the bus stopped Kara rushed out as though she was being chased. The wonderful morning fresh air greeted her whole heartedly the only thing about the day that felt beautiful to her the fresh windy breeze. She stepped into the bookstore Kelvin already opened up the store. She wore her apron which she still didn’t understand it’s use. “You’re really early.” Kelvin spoke from behind the counter as Kara popped up from the locker room. “By a minute.” Her voice was only a whisper that’s how she spoke. Taking the returned books off the counter she began to walk away she didn’t want to start a conversation. Kelvin knew nothing more about Kara only the essentials, the name age. The less he knew it would be better for both. Kelvin always thought Kara was just shy being around a guy every week but that wasn’t the case, little did he know. Kara walked to the Kids section with the fairy tale books that had been returned. No one was around only her she returned the books in their places. The classics like Peter Pan, snow White and then there was beauty and the beast. The book she despised she thought it was pathetic. Kara knew it was all fake despite it being a fairly tale. Firstly love from fairytales did not exist and there was no prince charming nor any night and shinning knight for her. Fairytales gave a unrealistic definition of love. Love is difficult complicated and it mostly hurts and has consequences. Kara was still in love with Alex even when she thought her love was dead, it hurt but she didn’t stop. Love was like a rose flower it is beautiful but the thrones hurts and it dies but not the one between Kara and Alex. “A fan of beauty and the beast.” A male voice brought Kara out of her thoughts. He was dressed in a green golf shirt with a black short just below the knee, if she wasn’t wrong he looked about the ages of 22-24. Kara stood there speechless not because she liked or found him attractive, he was but not to her. She hated talking to people mostly stranger, she never wanted to let anyone in no she couldn’t. “Okay.. The silent type so what’s your name, I’m Luc.” The kind gentleman gave her his lightest innocent smile before stretching out his hand, so that she would stake it. Kara remained there speechless and afraid what if he was one of them she thought. Luc was confused as to why she was acting like she saw a ghost but he just lowered his hand. At that sight Kara took it as an opportunity she quickly walked away to the romance section, no daring to look back. When he was out of her sight she quietly breathed out, she had no idea she held her breath all that time. Kara continued with her job of returning books to their respectable places untill lunch time hit. Kelvin had already gone to his lunch break meaning she had to close up before she went out. Stepping on the sidewalk Kara had turned the sign indicating it was closed for lunch then locked it. The sun hit her skin as she walked down the sidewalk to a near by small dinner. It was her usual place to eat at for it had a few people everytime. Kara sat on her usual spot just near the window but with dim lighting. “Afternoon ma’am, what will you be having today.” A kind young lady appearing in her early twenties asked Kara with a truthful smile. She’s young she can’t be one of them, Kara thought before answering the young lady, “A burger and a soda.” She smiled lightly. The young lady walked back to the kitchen to place the beautiful lady’s order. A few minutes later the young lady returned with her burger and soda at hand. She placed the dish and the drink on the table before disappearing to take new orders. Kara dug into her burger, a satisfied smile came across her face as she took a glorious big bite out of it. She liked burgers way more than any food but she wasn’t the only one, Alex enjoyed them too as soon as her memories flooded in a sad smile overtook the pervious smile. She ate her food and drunk her soda alone and in peace not really because she kept thinking of Her. She placed the cash on the table then stood to get going before she could get out her arm was grabbed stopping her right there. It wasn’t an aggressive or controling grab just a soft one. She turned and came face to face with the young waiter who had served her before. As soon as the young waiter got Kara’s attention she let go of her arm. “Sorry about that, you paid extra here’s your change.” She handed Kara her change. Kara didn’t receive the money she knew she paid too much it was a tip for the lady. “Thanks but no, it’s your tip.” Kara gave the girl a quick smile the one that disappears in a blink of an eye. “Oh thanks so much ma’am." The girl slipped the money in her apron. “You’re welcome.” Kara turned to the door it was about time she left. She was now stood outside the dinner her hand still on the door, she looked at the girl on more time then began closing the door that’s when she spoke. “Shyla I’m Shyla by the way.” with a nod and a smile Kara walked away. “Lunch today must have been good, you’re actually late than usual.” Kelvin questioned Kara as she got in he wore a goofy smile. She walked up to the counter where he stood and spoke, “The food was just too good to devour. I had to savour every bite.” She took her apron wearing it again. “It was that good? That you actually just spoke to me with more than five words in your sentence.” He exclaimed with excitement that Kara didn’t understand she thought he was being a drama king but he wasn’t. In the two months that she worked in the bookstore, she always gave him short or no answers they were still like two strangers. Kara hummed before walking to the book section. She had no work to do none that she knew of but she just came to look at the books as well as avoid her boss. Time went by fast before she knew it it was 4:30pm her time head home. Today’s shift had ended finally she would go back to her state of doing nothing all night. Her apartment was quiet just like always she turned on the lights then locked the door behind her. To make herself more comfortable she got out of her jeans and shoes. For dinner she decided to heat up her left over pizza from yesterday it wasn’t much of a healthy lifestyle but it was something. When the microwave timer rang she got the pizza in a plate off to the couch she went. “Well happy dinner to me.” Kara spoke to herself then began to eat her slice of pizza, a lonely dinner for a lonely soul.
