A Dream Takes Flight
Emily Abel Carter
“Emily Carter, I loved the way you brought life to the character, Burka during the audition. Your performance was outstanding and I hope to see you during the rehearsals. You get the role of Burka. An Email with a corresponding contract will be sent to you” I heard the casting director say and I held myself from jumping up and down the stage. I felt relief, excitement and elation all at once. I was so thrilled to know that all my hard work and preparation paid off and the casting director saw something special in me.
I am a student of Yale University and I am currently on my internship. I applied to be an intern for the Connecticut film center and I was accepted and assigned to the film manager’s assistant, Rachel Davis.
She was very nice and accommodating and we became friends in no time. I told her how much I wanted to become an actress and she kept encouraging to follow my dreams until one day she told me that the company had decided to produce a movie from a book I loved so much, The billionaire’s bet. I read that book so much during my freshman year of college.
She encouraged me to audition for the lead, Burka and I did. I was on my way back to the office to tell her that I got the role. I got to the office and saw her focused on her laptop probably checking out something for the film manger.
“Rachael” I shouted in excitement, stepping closer to her. She shook visibly and looked scared till she raised her head and saw me
“Oh, Emily, why’d you yell? You scared me” she said, calming down
“Guess what” I told her still excited and jumping around
“It must be something huge since you are currently jumping everywhere” she laughed “how was your audition? Did you get the role?”
I stared at her muffling my laughter and elation and then it clicked, she realized why I was so happy
“Oh my God, Emily? Did you get the role?” she said standing up exuberantly
“You are currently looking at the lead actress for the movie” I squealed showing her my casting email
Her eyes lit up and she ran over to hug me and we jumped around in circles with our fingers intertwined like little kids.
“Emily, I’m so happy for you. I always knew you’d make it” she said looking at me softly
“thank you so much Rachael. I couldn’t have done it without you and the encouragement you been giving to me. I really appreciate”
“Of course, Emi, that’s why you are my intern” she said, looking slightly proud of herself
“I just really hope I would be able to give the same performance I gave today during the rehearsals” I said
“Don’t worry Emi, you will. I believe in you. You can take the day off to go practice at home and get ready for tomorrow, I’ve got things covered here at the office” she said
“Oh my god, thank you so much Racheal, you’re the best” I said grabbing my bag and hugging her again before heading to the door
“I’ll see you tomorrow” I said blowing her a kiss
I walked out the door, my heart still racing with excitement and ordered an uber to take her home and it arrived five minutes later. I entered into my house and I still couldn’t shake the feeling of excitement I felt. My mind was bubbling with so many ideas on how to spice up the character, Burka.
I took off my clothes and I was too excited to prepare dinner so I ordered. I sat down, picked up my phone and reread the email so many times. I finally clicked the ‘Accept contract’ option and filled in all the necessary details they required from me. After I was done, I picked up my copy of the billionaire’s bet and started reading it all over again, submerging myself into the role of Burka with each page I read
Hours passed in a blur as I rehearsed my lines, trying out different inflections and gestures to find the perfect balance for the character. I lost track of time, completely consumed by the magic of the book.
As the sun began to set outside my window, I finally allowed myself to take a break. I collapsed onto my couch, my body buzzing with adrenaline and anticipation. Tomorrow would mark the beginning of a new chapter in my life, and I couldn't wait to see where it would take me
With renewed determination, She closed her eyes and let herself drift off into a restless sleep, her dreams filled with visions of lights, cameras, and the roar of the crowd.
