Chapter 19 - His Family

1061 Words
I am preparing myself inside my room when I heard a knock on the door and my mom's voice echoed outside of my room, asking me to come down for breakfast. "I'll be there in a minute" I answered and quickly fixed my necktie. I was wearing a color navy blue suit and a red necktie. I wore my favorite wristwatch that my grandfather left for me before I went outside of my room and head down to the kitchen where my family was waiting for me. I saw my great grandma's warm smile greeting me as I entered the kitchen I head toward her and kissed her. Things are starting to get better and better without my great-grandfather. I looked at the empty chair beside my great-grandmother. That is my great grandfather's favorite chair during meals. I never would have thought that starting today, I can no longer dine with him. "Son, thank you for accepting your father's wish for being the heir of the company" my mom smiled at me while she put her hands on mine. I smile back as I watched her eyes fill with happiness. I have a lot of responsibility that I left before just for a girl who never and will never love me. First is my family, I cut contact with them when I left the country then I heard the news from a newspaper that my great grandfather died. Second, my ambition was to be in a band and at the same time a business owner, when I decided to live in other countries all I did there was live a miserable life for getting a woman and thinking nothing but betrayal. Lastly, Julie, the woman I promised to never gonna see again. I wonder how is she? Wait, why am I even thinking of her? I never heard any news from her nor did I try to ask Carl and Miguel about her. I just want to forget her, my first ex-girlfriend who made me a fool. I finally did forget her but I still wonder why I am curious about her the moment I arrived here in the country. "I wanted to make up for everything I did," I said in a low voice while looking down at my food. I suddenly heard my family chuckle especially my Dad, my rival in mom's attention. When I was a kid I would always ask him for a competition about mom's favorite things. It is still fresh in my memories of how he ended up beating me. I cried a lot whenever my father wins and then I will run in my mom's embrace for comfort. I miss that. "Son, do not feel indebted to us. We are your family. If you think you fail us then you are wrong. We are always proud of you. It is us who fail to understand you. So,.." my Dad looked at me with his serious and worried eyes. "How are you? Are you okay?" He asked. I always wonder what my mother sees in him that made her end up marrying my dad. Now, I finally understand... My dad is a caring person. It is just his looks that will make you feel intimidated but when you got to know him, you will understand that he is a good person, a caring, loving, and responsible father. I think they are both lucky for having each other and also my family is lucky for having both of them. I wonder, when will I be able to find the right person for me? if only I hadn't forced myself to hold on to the person who didn't like me. Maybe I'm happy now... I showed him a genuine smile before answering "Perfectly fine, Dad. Thanks for asking" After breakfast, I got to talk with my elder brother, Zion. He was like my dad, he is serious and smart but also not too showy. The way he stands and acts was the same as Dad, especially his looks but deep inside he is also a caring and honest person like mom. "Xayne, I would like to tell you that I still could not believe that you have wasted 3 years of your life," he said as he put on his lab gown. We are inside his laboratory in the house. I cannot believe that my dad will allow him to have an underground laboratory. "Am I?" I asked. My brother nodded. "How can you say that?" My brother is a scientist. He loves doing research, is an adventurer, and finds history more entertaining than playing video games. Unlike me, I like music and math. We were both different. Even though my brother and I grew up together, he is still a mystery to me. I think, I still did not know him except for mom. Mom knew Zion very well because the only woman who was close to is our mother. I lost news about him from the day I decided to never come back but I heard from his colleague that he became eager about something perhaps a chemical invention. My brother chuckled and made me confused. Why is he laughing now? "Are you really asking me that? Why don't you ask and reflect on yourself?" He asked still smiling at me as if I just asked him a ridiculous question. I did not answer him so he heaved a sigh and then pat my shoulder. "Maybe if you see that person again, you will understand what I was talking about, little brother. Sometimes we do not appreciate the people who are there at the times we need them the most until we realize that they are gone." then he left and walked out of the room, leaving me confused by his words. Is he pertaining to someone I know? Then I turned around to see a woman inside a big capsule, wearing a white dress while her eyes close. She looks like she was sleeping but she is not. I remember her, before I left the country she is the woman that my brother treasures the most but she left him. She died in an accident. Now the only remnants she left for my brother were her dead body and old memories. Will I really regret it in the end? But I'm already regretting it...
