EVANGELINE There was only one reason she’d be interested in my birth mark; one reason she’d exclaim the way she did. I hoped I’d have more time before she figured it out, but I knew it was a matter of time. After all, my birth mark was one of my most definitive features at the orphanage. There, no one cared about our names, and judging by how my life had gone since then: my family and my failed marriage, I thought she’d focus her search elsewhere. “How could it be you?” she asked. “You’re a nobody, a f*****g orphan!” I ignored her screams, hoping to step by her and walk away, but she grabbed my shoulders firmly, her overgrown nails digging into my shoulders. I shot Nicholas a panicked look, but he didn’t move, he wasn’t even looking at me, instead, he carefully assessed the situation.
