Prologue
She woke to the bright sunshine streaming through the window, gripping her head as a throbbing pain pulsed through her. The room spun around her. All she could recall was the previous night. She had fun at the party last night with her step-sister, Mika. She’s drunk heavily, wanting nothing more than to simply enjoy herself at the party. Getting drunk and having fun at such an event wasn’t new to her. She’s used to these kinds of events, especially if her friends invite her. She’s not that innocent in this kind of matter, but she knows her limits. She always thought to herself that once she will go outside to get drunk and have fun, make sure that she still had 20 percent of her consciousness so that she was still able to get home safely. But this time, she couldn’t stop herself from drinking too much. In addition, Mika was pushing her to the limit, since it was a party, so they should become limitless. Everything from that night was hazy. Now, after those fun nights they did, she found herself in a room that was unfamiliar to her. Her eyes widened in shock when she noticed a naked man lying beside her. It was then she realized she was also unclothed. Only one thought consumed her: something had happened between them. He was a handsome man, well-built and undeniably attractive, but the terrifying problem was that she didn’t know him. “Sh*t, this shouldn’t have happened,” she whispered. Elyse immediately tried to stand but collapsed back to the floor because of her aching hips. She quickly glanced at the young man to see if he had woken up. Swallowing hard, she frantically searched for her wallet. She never wanted to see him again and refused to owe anyone anything. Taking out some money and placing it beside him as payment for what happened to them last night. She hastily dressed and quickly left the place. On her way home, the betrayal of that night weighed heavily on her. She immediately thought about her boyfriend, Kevin, whom she loved dearly. They had been together for a long time and were close to getting married. But what happened this time was surely something that he couldn’t forgive, an act of infidelity. She knew that would have a massive impact on their relationship. She didn’t want to hurt Kevin, but what she had done felt like she needed a heavy punishment she knew she deserved. But confessing something that was vulgar and dirty doings, she knew that it could also affect her family’s name, since her family is well-known business owners in town. Also, having an aide to Kevin’s family can give a strong bond to their business and can flourish in their next generation. This is what she was afraid of, knowing that she’s the legacy of the Gomez clan, heiress of their business, she should not have done things that could affect her and her family. Once someone blew about this scandal, she knew she was done. When her phone rang, she answered immediately. She took a deep breath, closing her eyes. “Hello, Kevin?” she responded, her voice strained as she heard her boyfriend at the other end. “Where are you, babe? Mika said, You didn’t come home last night. Everyone’s here, waiting for you.” She massages her temple, her eyes shut tight, replaying her mistake in her mind. She didn’t know how to tell him. She wanted to be honest to him, yet it stopped her because of a lot of possibilities. Elyse wanted to tell him how everything had spiraled into such a situation. But all she remembered was having fun with Mika, as it was their first night out together. She wants it to be memorable for both of them, since Mika wasn’t her biological sister, since Mika was the daughter of her stepmother’s first marriage. Since they were now one family, Elyse had decided to befriend Mika and started to treat her like a real sister. That’s why she agreed to her plan, yet why doesn’t equate her memory to what Mika said? “Hey, are you still there?” Kevin’s voice snapped her out of her thoughts. “S-sorry, I just have a lot on my mind. Didn’t Mika tell you? We hung out last night,” she said. “What? But Mika said you went out alone, with your friends.” Elyse froze at his words. Mika’s statement was impossible; that wasn’t what truly happened. Elyse hadn’t planned to go out, but Mika had pleaded with her to accompany her. Despite her reluctance, she agreed, wanting to get along with Mika. She never imagined Mika would betray her and twist the truth of what happened. “Okay babe, we’ll wait for you here, okay?” she breathed deeply and nodded as answer. “Yes, I will be there in a few minutes.” Kevin hung up the phone while Elyse was still confused about what happened. She knew the truth about what happened last night and what Mika’s statement is all confabulations. Mika should have known the truth; Elyse remembered Mika helping her when she was drunk. She clearly recalled Mika herself leading her to that room, and after that, she remembered nothing else. So Mika’s story was all lies Upon arriving home, a sense of dread washed over her as she saw all their family cars parked outside, as well as Kevin’s family;s car. She didn’t know what the occasion was, but she could feel something was terribly wrong. She took a deep breath before stepping inside, where she was immediately met with accusing stares. Her skin prickled with an uneasy feeling. Her father walked towards her, his expression grim. She took another deep breath and managed a strained smile. “Dad I’m so sorry I’m just–” But before she could finish, a resounding slap sent her reeling to the ground. She clutched her stinging cheek, utterly bewildered. She couldn’t comprehend why her father had done that. “I couldn’t believe you could do this to our family!” he roared. She was clueless, struggling to understand his words. What could possibly have caused him to slap her so hard? “Dad, what are you talking about–” she gasped as photographs were violently thrown at her face. Her eyes immediately fixated on them, and her shock intensified as she saw herself naked, intertwined with the men she saw beside her when she woke up. Her gaze snapped to Kevin, whose eyes burned with anger and tears. “I don’t know why you did this. You’ve stained our family with filth and immorality!” he yelled at her. “Dad, I can explain! I don't know how that happened, Mika brought me to that room–” “What, are you accusing Mika right now?! Are you insane, Elyse?” her aunt Celeste asked her. “Please, don’t drag my daughter into your indecency! I know you two don’t get along, so why would you be together last night?!” Her words made her shake her head in disbelief. She knows the truth and all those explanations she made was a lie and doesn’t support to his beliefs and her memory from what happened last night. “No, Auntie, Mika and I were together yesterday. I wasn’t supposed to go out, but she said she had a party to go to and her friends weren’t available, so she invited me, which I agreed to. When I got drunk, I asked her to help me, and she led me to the room,” she defended herself. “Stop it! Don’t involve me in your mess, Elyse!” Mika shrieked, tears immediately welling in her eyes as if she were the wronged one. “You know the real story. You were the one who invited me, but I refused, so you went out alone,” Mika clamined, a complete fabrication that Elyse knew to be false. “I spoke to Mika yesterday at 11 in the evening, she was in her room so it is impossible that you two were together!” her mother exclaimed, defending Mika. Elysse looked at her father, who was now seething with rage. “Dad please believe me, I didn’t want any of this to happen.” “But you already did,” Kevin suddenly interjected. She looked at him, seeing her once gentle and beloved boyfriend now consumed by disgust for her. “Just earlier, we were talking calmly. You had a chance to tell me everything. Good thing Mika told me everything, because it seems you had no intention of telling me anything.” She looked towards Mika, who, moments ago in tears, was now smiling, clearly enjoying Elyse’s predicament. She didn’t know that her boyfriend, Kevin, would believe in her and not wanting her to at least defend herself from this embarrassing mess. It felt like she had no allies left in the room; the photographs were damning proof. Everything depicted was real, but how could she defend herself when the events behind those pictures were against her will and entirely unknown to her? How could she convince everyone that it was a setup, and Mika was the true culprit? How could she win back her father’s affection, a father who now despised her? She didn’t know how else to defend herself. Everyone no looked at her with contempt. Her former allies had turned their backs on her. She slowly reached for her father’s foot, hoping he would believe her. “Dad please, believe me,” but instead of compassion, she received a kick. “From this day forward, I no longer acknowledge a daughter like you. I am severing all ties between us, because from now on, you have no family to face. The entire Gomez clan will disown you for defiling our family’s reputation.” All their love for Elyse vanished. Every good deed she had ever done seemed to disappear, overshadowed by this one mistake. Did they even try to understand or listen to her side? No, they were all deaf, as if hearing nothing, aligning themselves with what they believed to be truth and not a lie. They were deceived by photographs that showed reality but concealed the true events and the deception behind them. If only she had the strength to fight for herself, she would. But because of the disgrace they perceived as her betrayal, even her voice, screaming to be heard, crying for the help she desperately needed, fell on deaf ears
