CHAPTER TWO
(The Night Attack)
Aria's POV.
Soon, the darkness surfaced the whole earth inviting the night and inciting the wolves to their utmost vigilance. The young wolves had slept off. But, there were some of the wolves watching out, as usual. I was already preserved in Asher's room and was deeply asleep. Asher, on the other hand, was on the look-out for attackers. He told me how he stood as a watchman over me day and night. He always maintained safety for me and secured Kaid, his supportive brother, as well.
I opened my eyes a bit.
Suddenly, a loud noise was heard. It sounded like the collision of two angry wolves. Asher didn't waste time. He walked to the window, drew the curtain to another side and watched out. He wanted to know about the wolves who were having a clash.
"What's going wrong outside, dear?" I asked him, as I woke up suddenly. Asher wouldn't allow my voice to be heard by the attackers. It could be someone after my life.
"Shh!" Asher quickly shut me up and covered my face halfway, gently leaving me to sleep off again. "Don't utter a word. But, you are safe, my dear..."
"Huhh..." I slurred, as I turned my head down the bed again. I couldn't sleep until some minutes elasped the noise I heard.
Asher remained by the window side. He was glued to the curtain and was trying to notice the exact wolves fighting. Another bang was overheard from outside as the war was becoming tense. The sound of their howlings was echoing around every corner of the . Asher felt disgusted and was forced to shift the whole curtain cloth up.
Asher was taken aback. He drifted backwards. He almost broke the lantern which was laid exactly on the window wall.
It was his father, Alpha Ryker, of the Kyros pack, who had tarried outside the forest to lurk for his rival, Alpha Wynter. Alpha Wynter was from the Lunar pack. Asher wouldn't allow the fight to be so close to him. His father often fought aggressively and was ruthless against the other Alpha, which caused both of them constant dispute. It had even given Aria multiple senses of interest in Asher's family, making her cling to hers primarily.
Alpha Ryker had his wolves round about him. He gnashed his teeth and frowned his face, as he stomped his foot on the ground.
"Come forward..." Alpha Ryker challenged his rival. "If you dare!"
Alpha Wynter didn't give a response. He wasn't supportive, neither did he wish to surrender.
Next, Alpha Ryker blinked his eyes and shook his head around. He glanced through the number of the wolves breathing heavily to attack him, and standing at Alpha Wynter's side. He squeezed his face and approached Alpha Wynter at once. The latter seemed to have lost their stand. He was clearly watching out for the best way of catching Alpha Ryker.
Suddenly, Alpha Ryker jumped over him and grabbed him suddenly. He was sorely vexed that he targetted his jaw and broke it. Alpha Wynter fell to a side and tried to regain his strength. He couldn't raise his hnds for a retreat call.
"My wolves!" Alpha Ryker exclaimed, addressing the snarling wolves who continued to gnash their teeth in fury. They were totally submissive to their Alpha's command and wouldn't but respond to him.
"Alpha Ryker of the Kyros pack is winning!" They echoed in response.
"Don't get tired!" Alpha Ryker added, encouraging the wolves into action. He noticed some of them drawing closer to him, and he looked at them suddenly. "Why are you feeling inferior?"
"The head of our enemies is down..." Alpha Ryker continued, as he kept matching his feet on Alpha Wynter's claws. He didn't even show a feeling of pity for him, but kept on hitting him deeply.
Unexpectedly, Alpha Wynter stood up strong again, and howled very loudly. He appeared to be weak but ready to support his wolves. He shook his hands and prepared to reciprocate an attack on Alpha Ryker. He bounced on him and pushed him away to a far distance.
As soon as the wolves standing by each side of the Alphas noticed their departure, they became quiet. They reduced their breaths and gazed at each other, as if they had already formed an alliance.
In a jiffy, they started again.
Asher continued to watch them. He was awake all through. Later, he felt as though he was expected or called to just break outside and call for a halt. He didn't have that authority. His father didn't let him have a chance in most of his dealings due to his love for me. Asher had mixed feelings. As he shifted, he returned the curtain to its normal position.
After some minutes, not long after this, the battle rose up again. It rang louder in the room and shook the building. I woke up and was shivering. I couldn't even tell where I had been thrown into, as I met myself in the dark. The lantern was already lost. No one was near to hold me by the hand.
"I am Alpha Wynter!" I overheard from afar. It scared me the more. Hearing the voice of a warrior sounding as though he was going to be defeated soon added to my fright. I shifted to another side.
"There must be another Alpha attacking him..." I said to myself, sobbing uncontrollably.
Suddenly, I heard a strange noise. The Alpha that cried the other time was badly bruised and had fallen. I covered my face as blood splattered around the trees and the unbroken walls left.
"Come close!" Asher warned me, grabbing me immediately with his bare hands. He had been looking for me.
"Huh!" I exclaimed, as I followed him right away.
"The Alpha has been killed!"
"What!" I exclaimed again, covering my mouth." I didn't see what he was battling with, but I only heard the noise."
"Sorry," Asher pleaded. "Hope you're not injured?"
I nodded my head and shook it again. It spelt uncertainty which was caused by the fright.
"Thanks for coming for me...!" I appreciated him. "I had been walking here and there in the woods. I even thought it was the end of my life."
"Huh, no!" Asher countered my last statement. "You cannot be lost or out of my hands, dear."
"Hhh..." I sighed.
"Let's go." Asher instructed.
"Who killed the Alpha?" I asked him, my voice effusing much breaths. "Did you?"
"Shh!" Asher held his hands to his lips as he rushed me away.
