We start discussing the plan to rescue Melanie. I started unpacking my guns and a change of clothes. We all gather in the living room area and start talking.
Dad: So I have the money to pay off the front desk agent.
Me: Ok. What about Melanie?
Dad: The clerk will go to confirm Melanie is there. Then Gwen will knock on the door, out of sight and once he opens the door, well try to knock him out.
Gwen: Guns are a last resort.
I scoff and cross my arms. Suddenly, my phone starts ringing. Its leon. I stood up to walk away and answer the call.
Me: Hello.
Leon: So I want you to send a message to Kai.
Me: What's that?
Leon: Look I know who you guys are. I know you guys are part of the Ricci family.
Me: How did yo--
Leon: I know technology like Kai. I just don't use it for a career.
Me: So what are you asking?
Leon: Be rid of him. My family was fine before he came, and we'll be fine after he goes "missing".
Me: Soooo?
Leon: Yes. Do what you do best.
A smile creeps up on my face. I agree to do the deed and end the call. I'm not all talk. I swore if he touched her again I would kill him. Now I have someone wanting me to. I headed back to the living room. I sat quietly waiting for them to finish talking.
Dad: So is everyone clear on the plan?
Everyone: Yeah.
Me: One problem. He'll kill anyone of us. Only someone he trusts can get close to him.
Dad: And who is that?
Me: Melanie.
Dad: How?
Me: That is something I'll take care of.
We all get up to leave and get into our respective cars. We drive to the motel Melanie is being kept at. When we arrive, I was the first out of the car. My dad places his hand on my shoulder.
Dad: I'm first.
He heads to the office with a briefcase that's carrying the bribe money. I follow him inside. The girl behind the counter looks up. My dad gives her his famous smile.
Dad: Young lady, would you be so kind as to knock on Mr. Kai Grant's room.
Girl: I'm sorry I--
Dad: He has someone important to us with him. Could you at least check if she's there?
Girl: Agai--
My dad puts the suitcase on the counter and opens it. He slides it towards the girl. Her mouth drops open. And just like that, he slams the case closed. She jumps.
Dad: Confirm the girl is there and, whatever happens after that, you keep your mouth shut. Got it?
The girl nods her head vigorously. She comes from behind the counter. She heads down the hall and knocks on Kai's room door. She stands there, then shortly after, comes walking back.
Me: So?
Girl: There's a girl there. She's in a chair.
Dad: Good. This is for you. Keep quiet, or we'll be back for you sweetheart.
The girl looks frightened, but that's the last thing on my mind right now. We leave the office and meet up with Gwen. She goes and knocks on Kai's door but stays out of sight of the peephole. The moment Kai opens the door, she goes in. I rushed behind her but stayed out of sight but within earshot.
Gwen: I'm here for Melanie.
Kai: Wow. He sent you to come get her? What a bit--
The sentence isn't finished. If I knew my sister she probably just hit him. I moved a bit closer to the door. And was he just about to call me a b***h?!
Gwen: Watch how you speak about my brother.
Me: If anyone's a b***h, it's you.
I can't take it anymore. I enter the room and my eyes go straight to Melanie.
Melanie: Liam!
Me: Girasole.
While I'm looked at Melanie, all I hear is laughing. He pulls out a gun and aims it at me. I look at Gwen with a told-you-so-look. She rolls her eyes and pulls hers out.
Melanie: Kai, please don't.
Me: It's fine Melanie. I'm actually here for only one reason. Have you eaten?
Melanie: Just chips.
Me: Ok. Listen Kai. I admit defeat. You can have Melanie.
Melanie: What?!
Kai: What's the catch?
Me: She hasn't eaten, so I want her to have her favorite food.
Melanie: Liam?!
It's not the end though. I want to shoot myself just for saying something like that. I'd die before letting anyone else have her. I try to hand it to her, but he snatches it. s**t that I didn't take into account. If he opens the bag, we're not coming out of this clean. He looks back at me.
Kai: Kind of heavy for a potato.
Me: It is "loaded".
He continues to stare at me. He finally hands it to her. I'd wipe my brow if I didn't have a gun aimed at me. I looked at Melanie. A tear ran down her cheek. She's holding the bag but hasn't opened it yet. I don't have time for this.
Me: Melanie just feed the damn baby!
Kai: Dont you talk to her like that!
Me: I'm sorry. She just needs to eat.
Kai: Melanie eat.
She starts to open the bag. Her facial expression changes. She looks to me. I do nothing because if I do, he'll look back and everything is screwed. He really let his guard down when it come to Melanie. I wrote a note, and hopefully she reads it and understands what it means. She takes it out of the bag and aims it at his back. I grabbed Gwen's arm and pulled her back some.
The bang goes off. Kai drops to his knees. Melanie rushes into my arms. I held her close and kissed her forehead.
Me: I'd never let anyone have you girasole. Your mine.
Melanie: What took you so long?
Gwen: Sorry, that's on me and dad. We thought he'd come in here guns blazing and we didn't want the heat. So we had to make a plan for this. Trust me, he's was ready to come for you.
I smile at her. Our reunion is cut short. Kai grabs his gun and aims it at Melanie and me. I freeze. The moment before he fires, Gwen pushes me and Melanie out of the way. All I see is my sister hitting the floor. One second later a bullet goes right through his head.
Lexis: That was beautiful.
Me: Thanks Lexis but he got Gwen.
Lexis: Baby! I'm coming.
Gwen: I'll be......ok.
I lost the last of my sanity. I pulled out my gun and aimed it at him. I knew Melanie would be upset, but he crossed the line.
Me: You kidnapped my wife and child. Then shoot my sister. Well, I warned time and time again. This was the last straw. Leon asked me to relay a message for him.
I pull the trigger until the chamber is empty. I grabbed Melanie's gun and emptied her clip into him. I feel no remorse, no regret. I looked over to Melanie, who helped Gwen over to the door. She has horror written all over her face. I'm about to get an ear full.
Me: I'm sorry Melanie.
Melanie: Let's just go home.
Me: Take Gwen to the car. I'll be out in a second.
She walks out. I was expecting her to cry or yell at me. I squat next to his lifeless body. I wasn't expecting this. I waited for the clean-up crew to come in. I noticed a dress on the bed. It'd be perfect for her. I grabbed the dress. Once they come in, I head out. My dad and Lexis are at the car making a scene.
Dad: Gwen?! What happened?!
Lexis: Baby stay awak.
Gwen: Dad....stop....screaming. Lexis.... shut.... up.
Dad: Sweetheart, don't leave me.
Gwen: You guys..... are embarrassing.
When I walk over, Melanie is explaining what happened. I look at my sister, praying this isn't the end. I placed the dress in the trunk. I get in the driver's seat, Gwen's lying down in the back, and Melanie gets in the passenger seat. I intertwine our fingers. I placed a kiss on the back of her hand and started the car. Lexis gets in the backseat with Gwen.
Dad: Let's get you kids home.
