Serena’s heart pounded as Hart disappeared into the shadows, his ominous words lingering in her mind like a storm cloud. She clenched her fists, forcing herself to breathe. The forest was quiet now, except for the rustling of leaves in the wind. Her escape plan had failed, and she felt trapped in a way she never had before.
She leaned against a tree, her legs trembling beneath her. “What do I do now?” she whispered to herself, her voice shaky.
Suddenly, a twig snapped behind her, and she spun around, fear coursing through her veins. Her eyes darted around the dark forest until she spotted a familiar figure stepping into the moonlight.
“Gary?” she breathed, relief flooding her chest.
Gary held his hands up, his expression calm. “It’s me,” he said softly. “I followed you.”
Her relief was short-lived. “Why are you here?” she demanded, her voice sharp. “I don’t want anyone following me!”
Gary sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. “I just wanted to make sure you were okay. When I saw you leave, I knew you’d need someone to watch your back.”
“I don’t need your help,” Serena snapped, though her voice lacked conviction.
“You don’t have to trust me,” Gary said, his tone steady. “But you shouldn’t be out here alone. The forest isn’t safe at night.”
Serena crossed her arms, glaring at him. “You’re only saying that because of Hart. He sent you, didn’t he?”
Gary shook his head. “Hart doesn’t control me, Serena. I’m here because I care. Because I want to help you.”
The sincerity in his voice caught her off guard, and she looked away, unsure of what to say.
“Serena,” Gary continued, stepping closer, “you’re not alone in this. I know how Hart can be, but Jack and I aren’t like him. We want you to have a choice.”
She scoffed. “A choice? How is this a choice when I’m forced to deal with all three of you?”
Gary hesitated, then nodded. “You’re right. It’s not fair. None of this is fair. But that doesn’t mean we can’t figure it out together.”
Serena shook her head, frustration bubbling to the surface. “You don’t get it, Gary. Hart has already made it clear he won’t let me go. He knows things about me—things he could use against me. I’m trapped.”
Gary’s brow furrowed in concern. “What things? What is he holding over you?”
She hesitated, the weight of her secret pressing down on her. Could she trust Gary with the truth?
“I… I can’t say,” she finally muttered, her voice barely audible.
Gary’s expression softened. “Whatever it is, you don’t have to carry it alone. You can tell me when you’re ready.”
Serena’s eyes filled with tears, but she quickly wiped them away. “Why do you even care? You don’t know me.”
“I want to know you,” Gary said earnestly. “I don’t want you to feel like you’re fighting this battle by yourself.”
Before Serena could respond, another voice cut through the night.
“Serena?”
Both of them turned to see Jack emerging from the shadows, his expression a mix of relief and worry.
“What’s going on here?” Jack asked, his gaze shifting between Serena and Gary.
“She tried to leave,” Gary explained, his voice calm. “I followed her to make sure she was safe.”
Jack’s jaw tightened as he looked at Serena. “You were going to run?”
Serena glared at him. “What choice do I have? I’m not staying here and letting Hart dictate my life!”
Jack sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I get it. I really do. But running isn’t the answer. Hart will find you, no matter where you go.”
“That’s exactly what I’m afraid of,” Serena said bitterly.
“Then let us help you,” Jack said, his voice firm. “We can stand up to Hart together.”
Serena shook her head. “You don’t understand. He knows my secret. If he tells anyone, I’m as good as dead.”
Jack’s eyes softened. “Whatever your secret is, we’ll protect you. You don’t have to face this alone.”
Serena let out a bitter laugh. “You keep saying that, but how can I trust you? How do I know you won’t turn on me like everyone else?”
Gary stepped closer, his gaze steady. “Because we’re not everyone else. We’re your mates, Serena. Whether you like it or not, that bond means something to us.”
She looked between the two of them, her heart torn. Their words felt genuine, but the fear of betrayal still lingered.
“I don’t know if I can do this,” she admitted, her voice breaking.
“You don’t have to decide right now,” Jack said gently. “Just let us help you tonight. We’ll figure out the rest later.”
Serena hesitated, then nodded reluctantly. “Fine. But I’m not promising anything.”
“That’s enough for now,” Gary said with a small smile.
As they began walking back toward the pack territory, Serena couldn’t shake the feeling that her life was spiraling out of control. She glanced at Gary and Jack, their presence oddly comforting despite her reservations.
When they reached the edge of the forest, Jack stopped and turned to her. “If Hart gives you any trouble, come to me or Gary. Don’t try to handle him alone.”
Serena nodded, though she wasn’t sure if she believed they could protect her from Hart.
“Goodnight, Serena,” Gary said softly, his eyes lingering on her for a moment before he and Jack disappeared into the night.
Serena stood there for a while, staring at the spot where they had been. Their words echoed in her mind, offering a glimmer of hope she hadn’t felt in a long time.
But as she made her way back to her house, Hart’s voice haunted her.
“You’re mine, Serena. You don’t have a choice.”
She shivered, wrapping her arms around herself. No matter what Gary and Jack said, she knew the battle was far from over. Hart wouldn’t let her go without a fight, and she wasn’t sure if she was strong enough to resist him.

The next morning, Serena awoke to the sound of someone pounding on her door. She groaned, pulling the blanket over her head, but the knocking continued.
“Serena, open up!” Hart’s voice boomed from the other side.
Her heart sank as she threw off the blanket and stumbled to the door. She hesitated for a moment, then opened it a crack.
Hart stood there, his expression unreadable. “We need to talk,” he said, pushing the door open and stepping inside.
Serena crossed her arms, glaring at him. “What do you want?”
“I want to know what you were thinking last night,” Hart said, his tone cold. “Running away? Did you really think that would work?”
“I don’t owe you an explanation,” Serena snapped.
Hart’s eyes darkened. “You owe me everything, Serena. You’re my mate. You don’t get to just walk away from that.”
“I never asked to be your mate!” she shot back, her voice trembling with anger.
“That doesn’t change the fact that you are,” Hart said, his voice low and dangerous. “You can fight it all you want, but the bond is real. And you belong to me.”
Serena’s fists clenched at her sides. “I’ll never belong to you, Hart. Never.”
Hart stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. “You don’t have a choice, Serena. You can either accept this or make things harder for yourself.”
Before Serena could respond, the door burst open, and Gary stormed in, his eyes blazing.
“Enough, Hart!” Gary growled. “Leave her alone.”
Hart turned to his brother, his expression icy. “This doesn’t concern you, Gary.”
“It concerns me when you’re threatening her,” Gary shot back. “She deserves better than this.”
Hart sneered. “You think you can protect her? You think she’ll choose you over me?”
“She doesn’t have to choose anyone,” Gary said firmly. “She’s not a prize to be fought over.”
Serena watched the two of them, her heart pounding. She had never seen anyone stand up to Hart like that before.
“Get out,” she said, her voice trembling but strong.
Hart turned to her, his eyes narrowing. “What did you say?”
“I said get out,” Serena repeated, her voice growing steadier. “I don’t want you here.”
For a moment, Hart looked like he might argue, but then he smirked. “Fine. But this isn’t over, Serena. Not by a long shot.”
He strode out of the room, slamming the door behind him.
Gary turned to Serena, his expression softening. “Are you okay?”
She nodded, though her hands were still shaking. “I’ll be fine.”
Gary hesitated, then reached out and gently touched her arm. “You don’t have to face him alone. Jack and I are here for you.”
Serena looked up at him, her heart aching with a mix of gratitude and fear. “Thank you, Gary,” she said quietly.
He gave her a small smile. “Get some rest. We’ll figure this out together.”
As Gary left, Serena sank onto her bed, her mind racing. For the first time, she felt like she might have allies in this fight. But she knew the road ahead would be anything but easy.
She stared out the window, the sunlight streaming in, and made a silent vow to herself.
No matter what it took, she would find a way to reclaim her freedom.
