Ashley tearfully left Mrs Johnson's office but couldn't go back home for 2 reasons.
1 Although she is well-dressed, nobody knows her true identity since it is too early, her driver can't come forward yet, and she can't go back home on a bus
2 Her grandfather happily sent her off this morning with a lot of belief in her and. He was eagerly waiting at home so she could tell him all about her first day at work. She couldn't go back home crying like an overly pampered spoiled child just because Mrs Johnson happened to be on her period with her moods swinging here and there.
As for the second reason Ashley gave, remember she's not aware that Mrs Johnson is always going about with a moody and stern expression and any little thing can set her off since it's her first day.
However, for those 2 reasons, she realized it was best to stay in the lobby till Mrs Johnson calmed down. Walking down to the lobby and approaching the receptionist who had a bright smile on her face. The receptionist asked her what the problem was.
She seemed nice. I liked her, she thought. She returned the smile and told her about what had happened in Mrs Johnson's office. Upon hearing her supervisor was Mrs Johnson, the receptionist's smile faltered, but she quickly recovered and offered her a sympathetic smile.
The receptionist, understanding the new intern’s plight, assured her all would be well and told her she was welcome to keep her company in the lobby for as long as she needed.
Time seemed to fly pretty quickly with the help of the receptionist who tried to fill her in on all the important gossip going around the Williams group and trying to familiarize her with how things are done here. The receptionist occasionally stopped talking to attend to whoever walked up to her.
Ashley, though a ruthless and cold woman, knew she needed to gather all the information she could. She decided to play along only to secure the receptionist at her side as her go-to gossip partner. Although Ashley didn't say much, that still didn't stop the receptionist, who had been bored at her work all day, from talking.
Ashley appreciated it but hoped the receptionist wouldn't regret this day once her identity was out in the open.
After almost 2 hours of waiting in the lobby, thankfully it wasn't dreadfully silent thanks to the receptionist. She informed the receptionist she would like to go back to her supervisor’s office. The receptionist, knowing she couldn't change the new intern's mind, could only offer her another sympathetic smile as she walked back to the elevator.
This time, after Liam told her she had come out of the wrong elevator the last time, she decided to get it right this time, so she went about looking for the one she was meant to get on.
Luckily, she met a few employees trying to get on the elevator, so she needed no one to tell her that it was the elevator she was meant to take. As she silently rode in the elevator, she hoped Mrs. Johnson's mood would have improved, and she could get a brief on her first day, so the day wouldn't be wasted.
After she got off the elevator on the 20th floor, she looked around but this time no one was there, so she tried using her sixth sense to remember where Mrs Johnson's office was, and she got it right this time. She was glad she had a good memory which had always helped her in her academics. You could say she was the golden child of her family, the one her father was proud of and the favorite of her grandfather. Although her relationship with her mum isn't all smooth sailing, she's glad she has them all in her life including her little brother, who has all of her mother's attention despite how slow he can get.
As she got to Mrs Johnson's office she said a little prayer in her mind and knocked on her office. This time, Mrs Johnson was in a much better state, so it didn't take long for her to ask Ashley to come in.
She entered the office and learned from her previous experience as the fast learner that she is, so she made sure to focus her attention on Mrs Johnson and to not look elsewhere.
Mrs Johnson, though not easily impressed, was a little impressed at how quickly the new intern picked up things but still made up her mind to deal with her throughout her stay at the Williams group.
This time she attended to Ashley, although Ashley didn't get a warm welcome as she expected, which only further proved her discovery of how it wasn't good to have Mrs Johnson around in the Williams group for efficiency's sake.
However, despite not being enthusiastic about welcoming Ashley, she still tried to go through the monotonous greeting for her boss’s sake.
She sat there and said to Ashley…. Hi, as you must have seen on my office door and your offer letter, my name is Mrs Johnson, and you're welcome to Williams Group, the largest accounting firm in New York City. She looked at her disdainfully and said," I don't even know how someone like you got an internship here in the first place, but I hope you are ready to work and not laze around the office just because you got it easily.
Ashley wondered if this was how she welcomed all the new intakes of the company and thought they all must have stayed because of the huge salary and reputation of working for the Williams group, because if this was the welcome they all got they all wouldn't have stayed. Heck! If she wasn't here as an undercover intern she would have walked away a long time ago. For this reason alone she is glad she made this choice, since if she had come in as the CEO Mrs Johnson would have pretended and tried to get on her good side.
After that, she stood and went to one of the shelves containing some files. She picked them up, handed them to me. She told me that was my welcome package and that I should make sure to go through every single one. Then she said that as an intern, my main responsibility is to work with the team and assist them with various tasks. However, since this organization is a large one and due to some peculiarities she doesn't understand, she was informed I would be spending a month in each department. So, for the next 1 month, I am to assist her team and herself. My main duties include data entry and helping with research projects.
Next, she pulled up the diagram of an organizational structure and I snorted. As if I didn't already know what the organizational structure of my company is. I kept quiet and let her say all she wanted to say.
But, that was all the welcome I got. She didn't even talk about who I would go to for help if I encountered any problem or introduced me to the team. I guess I would have to figure it out myself.
Ugh….how I hate this woman and I haven't even been here for 5 hours. I said a silent prayer and prayed for patience because I am not a very patient person.
Then she gave me my first task, which was to go photocopy some documents. She didn't even tell me where to go for it, but as I got out of her office I met a nice looking lady, so I walked up to her to ask her where I could locate the photocopier, and she led me to the copy room.
Upon getting there, I didn't know what to do. I had never had to do little tasks like this all my life so I stood there looking at the machine wondering what I should press or not.
I eventually pressed a button, but the documents got stuck. I kept hitting the machine to get them out. At that moment, Liam walked into the copy room with some documents as well and rushed to where I was so he could help me. I explained my plight to him and instead of laughing, he dropped his documents to help me.
Now that Liam has helped me, I have the copies already though I gathered them clumsily, but I'm glad I have achieved my first task. Liam finished his, and we bade each other our goodbyes. But, deep down, I hoped we would see ourselves more often, and he would help me more.
