Last night had been a night I would never forget- and really, that was all I had intended for it to be. I didn’t want to believe for a second that Miya could fail the trials, that we could be pulled apart by my asshole father and asshole friend, Rose. Nonetheless, I had to prepare myself for both outcomes.
If I couldn’t have her, I could always have that memory.
Friday, after school, Miya met me by my jeep. It had been decided that she would ride with me to the packhouse, where the opening ceremony was taking place. Tonight’s trial was a simple game of Hide and Seek, to start after dark. To kick things off, we’d be having a barbecue and a pool party. We didn’t often invite outsiders to this celebration, so everyone had to be told to be on their best behavior.
