Chapter Forty-Five Wayne showed his ID to the constable guarding Peter Thompson’s room in the intensive care ward of City Hospital. ‘Any sign of trouble?’ said Wayne. ‘Nothing,’ said the constable. Wayne opened the door and went into the room, where Thompson, with a bandage around his head, was hooked up to an IV drip and several machines monitoring his vital signs. Peter appeared to be sleeping but opened his eyes when Wayne closed the door. ‘I remember you,’ said Peter. ‘How are you feeling?’ said Wayne. ‘Like s**t,’ said Peter. ‘Where's Sergeant Fuller?’ ‘He's up north.
