Chapter Thirty Carl was sitting at his desk in the chief inspector’s office reading Harry’s update on developments in the Clarke case when his phone rang. ‘Carl, it’s Evelyn.’ Carl thought she sounded flat. ‘Hello, Evelyn. How is he?’ He heard her take a couple of breaths. ‘He’s gone, Carl. About half an hour ago.’ Carl didn’t know what to say. He’d been expecting the chief to recover, even though he’d known it was very unlikely he’d return to work. ‘I’m sorry, Evelyn.’ ‘It’s probably for the better, Carl.’ Carl knew she was right. As much as he’d hoped the chief would recover, he hadn’t wanted to see him suffer the indignity of a quasi-vegetative state for the rest of his life. ‘Where are you?’ said Carl. ‘I’m still at the hospital, waiting for them to finish the paperwork.’
