The morning light bled gold through the slats of the blinds, warming her bare skin as she stirred in the bed. Ace’s chest rose and fell beneath her cheek, steady, calm. She could feel his heartbeat, could feel how safe she was here, wrapped in his arms, his scent still clinging to the sheets—leather, smoke, and something uniquely him.


For a second, she just listened. No yelling from the yard. No roaring engines. No broken bottles or slamming doors. Just silence.


Peace.


She shifted to look up at him, brushing a piece of hair from his face. He didn’t flinch. He was actually sleeping for once. She pressed a soft kiss to his chest and let herself believe—for just a breath—that they were out of the woods.
