Chapter 5

1184 Words
In the days that followed, I felt like a zombie moving through the motions trying to focus on everything except what Jade had said that night. As the week progressed and my next day off loomed in front of me, my unease grew. What in the heck was I going to do? I knew that Liam had gone to my house several times; thankfully, each time I had been at work, the only sign that he had been there was his scent around my home and the letters he would leave asking me to please call or contact him. With each letter, I could feel his anxiety grow. He knew that I was ignoring him. Part of me hated doing that, but I needed time to think. After the night we had our chat Jade hadn’t bothered me about Liam again, but anytime I zoned out or lost focus on the task at hand, she gave me a knowing look. My last double of the week came, and as I trudged up the steps of my home feeling and looking like death warmed over, I didn’t take notice of the figure hidden in the shadows by the door; a hand appeared out of nowhere grasping my hand as I attempted to unlock my door. Jumping, I tried to hold back my gasp, trying to hide that I hadn’t noticed him standing there. “Liam, now really isn’t the best time.” “I can see that, but how about I help you inside, so I know you don’t suddenly collapse on the floor.” His voice was soft as he spoke. Not waiting for a reply, he followed me inside, standing close as I moved into the kitchen, needing some food before I passed out. Walking to the fridge, I tried to suppress my sigh, knowing as I opened it I couldn’t find anything as I hadn’t been shopping yet. Grabbing a soda, I turned, doing my best to ignore Liam. I grabbed a banana and headed into the living room. “Look, Liam, I know what you want me to say, but I can’t. I’m sorry I am.” avoiding his gaze, messing with the banana in my hands, not wanting to look up. “Give me one reason why.” “Because you’re a wol-” “That’s not a reason. That’s an excuse. I’m not looking for excuses, so you need to do better than that, Anna, because you are mine. I won’t accept the stupid propaganda that most shifters stand for, so try again.” Liam’s voice was soft, like he was trying to hide the growl building in his chest. Jade’s words once again echoed through my head, almost like an echo to Liam’s words bringing forward the hope that I was trying so desperately to hide from. Just as quickly, my thoughts turned also to Kenna, and while the sadness was there, I knew that if she were here now, she would tell me to take a chance. The chance she had wanted so desperately, and yes, while she didn’t get her happy ever after, she would want me to chase after mine. “Look, I can’t promise you anything. I don’t know-” “That’s your problem, Anna. You need to stop thinking and start feeling” Grasping my chin, forcing me to look up, not letting go, he waited as I met his eyes. Leaning forward, I kissed him; his lips were soft and gentle as they met mine as if he was afraid that the light touch alone would scare me away. I moaned, losing myself in the moment all other thoughts faded, leaving only him and his lips on mine. I pulled him close, needing and wanting to feel more of him against me. Lightheaded from lack of air, I turned my head and broke the kiss. I tried to get my breathing under control as his lips moved along my chin. Wherever he kissed, a line of fire followed, turning me on in a way no one had ever before. “Anna, you need to tell me to stop; otherwise, I won’t be able to stop until you’re writhing under me and screaming my name.” Liam let out a growl that, for once, didn’t inspire fear but instead fed the fire I was feeling inside. Not bothering to answer him, I took Jade’s advice deciding to take a chance. Grabbing his face, I pulled him close, nipping his lip. His hands slid down my sides. He paused at my ass, pulling me more firmly against him before they slid lower, and he lifted me. Wrapping my legs around his waist, he carried us into the living room and gently laid me on the couch. “Looks like I’m trapped by the big bad wolf. I hope he doesn’t plan on eating me,” I teased, a smile spreading across my face as I looked up and met the now yellow eyes of his wolf looking back at me. “That’s exactly what I plan to do,” he growled as his lips met mine—pressing his body into mine, bringing my attention to the bulge in his pants. Rolling over on the bed the next morning, I was stopped by an arm around my waist. But before the panic set in, the memories from the night before came flooding back. Looking over at Liam, I smiled. He hadn’t pushed for anything I wasn’t ready for, not once asking me to complete our bond. Curling up beside him, I tried to wait till he woke up, but after what felt like hours, my bladder couldn’t take it anymore. Slipping out from under his arm, I snuck into the bathroom, doing my best to be quiet as I did so. When I stepped out, Liam stood in the doorway of my room; the phone pressed to his ear. He didn’t speak as he listened to the caller on the other end. Looking up, his eyes met mine, anger and uncertainty clear as day on his face and in his eyes. The call seemed to go on for what felt like millennia, while I knew it couldn’t have been more than a minute or two. Hanging up the phone, he let out a sigh looking away from me, almost as if he was searching for the right words before he spoke. “Anna, a shifter, was found dead this morning just outside of our territory.. it was a fox shifter, and there was a message left at the scene by the killer. A small shifter will be killed every day until the local packs revoke their protection of the small shifters… Anna, they specifically mentioned you in their threat… they want you handed over for trying to step out of your place.” Liam growled as he finished speaking, but I no longer saw and heard Liam; I only saw my sister’s face in my mind. My fear thought that was gone; instead, it was replaced by anger. Whoever had done this would pay.
