Tragedy
Present Day
Kiera ran as fast as she could, knowing she needed to get to the neighboring town’s border. She had already lost track of how far she had run, her mind continually drifting back to her home. So much had changed in just a few short hours, her heart aching for those she had left behind.
Everything that evening had seemed so normal. Laying in bed with her mate Stephen, a smile on her face as she had moved his hand to feel the butterflies fluttering in her rounding belly, a huge smile on his own face. The excitement in his eyes as he felt their pup kick, quickly turning to sorrow as he knew he would never get a chance to meet their child. A knock on the door interrupting their private moment.
“Yes!”, demanded Stephen as Beta Hendrix entered their room.
“Patrol has seen a large army coming closer to our lands, your majesties.” Hendrix growled out.
“It is time.” Kiera quietly said, a single tear rolling down her cheek.
Everything else was a blur, Stephen leading her to the secret exit that had a tunnel which led to a trail to the forest behind the lake. Stephen grabbing Kiera in one last embrace, telling her to run. Kiera had to fight every last instinct to stay and fight beside her mate and pack.
The memory of Stephen’s strong arms wrapped around her, along with his determined blue eyes and whispered “I love you” gave Kiera the strength to keep on running. She knew the town was not much further as the trees began to thin out.
Suddenly an excruciating pain coursed through her body, causing her to collapse to the ground. Hugging herself tightly, tears began flowing freely down her cheeks. She new what that pain meant, Stephen her mate, the love of her life, had been killed. He had fulfilled his role as her protector, buying her enough time to escape and sacrificing himself.
Kiera turned her head looking back the way she had come. In the far distant a red glow was coming from where the palace was located. She stared at the red glow, entranced by it, pain ripping through every part of her body and soul.
A loud howl broke through the night sky bringing Kiera back to the present moment and knowing she had to continue on. Standing up, gasping through the pain, she started running again. Trying to clear her thoughts with the only task she needed to complete tonight: getting to the cabin that was hidden on the outskirts of the town. Another howl broke the silence of the night, a little closer but still far enough away. Kiera kept running, the pain still ever present, not being able to mourn her mate or her pack.
Time seemed to slowdown as she ran. Exciting the forest she saw soft lights glowing in the distance. Only a little more distance to go until she was at the cabin. Leaning on a tree for support, the pain still ripping through her body, she took a deep breath. Her eyes focused to the right where she saw the outline of the cabin. Slowly, she made her way and reached the door. Knowing once she stepped through this door she would no longer be The Lycan Queen Kiera of the Silver Crescent Moon Lake Kingdom.
Sighing heavily she opened the door, stepping inside and going straight to the table. The cabin was very simple and old. Across from the door was a wooden table with one chair. To the right of the table was a small kitchen and a door Kiera assumed led to a bathroom. To the left of the table was a tiny bed with blankets and a pillow. The witch Kat had bought it and made it her home a few years ago when the witches had vowed to help and protect Kiera and her pup. On the table was a bottle with a note.
Queen Kiera,
This bottle holds a potion for you to drink that will change your appearance and hide your scent. Once you drink it you will no longer be able to shift into your wolf. There is also a cell phone, with my number programmed, and a map to show you how to get to the Coven of the Star Sisters, where I and my sister patiently await for your arrival.
Safe Travels and may Hecate protect you and guide you safely to us.
Kat
Kiera stared at the bottle, her mind wandering to her wolf Bella, who had been with her for these last 13 years.
Bella, I’m not sure I can do this. We lost Stephen and Roan tonight. I’m not sure if I can lose you too. Kiera communicated to her wolf.
Bella whimpered It’s the only way Kiera, we have discussed this so many times. I’ll still be there in a way but we have to do this to protect our pup. This is what the Moon Goddess has instructed us to do.
I know, but it is not easy sighed Kiera.
Bella let out one more quiet whimper but said nothing.
Kiera picked up the bottle and took the top off. Staring at the bottle she exhaled a deep breath she had been holding. Putting the bottle to her lips she drank the sweet liquid. Suddenly, her mind felt empty and she felt truly alone, the emptiness pounding in her head. It was too much and she needed to grieve. Kiera had lost everything tonight, everything she loved was gone. Right now she felt anger and hatred towards the Moon Goddess and Michael, the “false king”.
She had not asked to be a part of the Goddess’s plan but she had been created and born for that purpose. To end a war that had been going on for thousands of years, to carry the heir of the Moon Kingdom and a leader to unite all the supernaturals. Kiera new her mission and knew it’s importance but the pain that was still coursing through her body was a reminder of all she had lost in such a short few hours.
Kiera’s head was pounding, she went to the bed opposite the table and laid down. Crying herself to sleep Kiera hoped for a dreamless night, one where she could no longer feel the pain and one she didn’t have to think. The Moon Goddess respected her wishes tonight as darkness engulfed her for a dreamless and lonely night.
