POV MARK
Amelia was just as shocked to see me as I was to see her and it was silent for a moment before either of us spoke. “Mrs Ferguson I’m chief inspector Mark Jackman and this is detective Mary Burn I was wondering if we could have a moment of your time” I looked down at her hand and she was wearing a huge diamond engagement ring and wedding band and I felt like I could have been sick there and then. Seeing her in the home she shared with her husband felt like a punch to the gut. She looked at me with wide eyes and nodded her head and I think the shock of seeing me in her own house had left her speechless “yes of course, please come in, can I make you a tea or coffee?” Mary said “yes we’ll have a tea please” and we followed her through her living room and into her kitchen and Mary stared at Amelias perfect ass as she walked in front of us and mouthed ‘wow’ as we both watched her hips sway from side to side. I couldn’t help but look around and there was wedding photos of her and her husband on the fireplace and it tore at my heart. When we got into the kitchen she said “please have a seat” and she gestured to the long kitchen table. Her house was stylish and everything I thought it would be and there was a set of golf clubs in the corner and I could feel my jealousy building with every passing moment. “I’m not actually known as Mrs Ferguson, I kept my maidan name, I’m Dr Amelia Thompson” I was glad that she hadn’t lied to me about her name because that really would have broke my heart. As she made the tea Mary said I love your house and she politely thanked her but I was just sitting there quietly panicking. Then Mary said “I noticed you have suit cases by the door, are you going away on holiday? We wouldn’t want to keep you back if you have a flight to catch” this was her way of finding out what she was up to. “No I just arrived back about half an hour ago, I’ve been in Africa for the past month. I was volunteering there. I’m a surgeon so I went over to help out at a children’s hospital” Mary looked really impressed but I wasn’t surprised because I knew she was a good person. She sat down with the tea but she could hardly look at me. “So can I ask.. why you are here?” She asked and I sat up straight in my chair. “I believe that you were a patient of Dr Jeremy Logan?” I asked and she nodded her head “yes but I stopped seeing him just over six months ago?” “And why was that?” Asked Mary “because I realised that therapy isn’t for every one. Is that why you’re here, because I’m sure I paid him in full even for the appointments that I missed.” She was so cute to think that two detectives were there about an unpaid bill. “No I’m sorry to inform you that he was found dead last night” she let out a loud gasp and threw her hand up to her face. “Oh my god” she said and it was obvious that she knew nothing about his murder. “He was only a young guy, this is such a shame.” I nodded my head “we would like to know if you could help us with any information you might know about Dr Logan. We are interviewing all of his patients” I didn’t want her to know that we were only there because he was looking up her file at the time he died. “I really didn’t know anything about him because when I was there I would just do all the talking and he would just sit there and listen and take notes. But I did see that he had a photo on his desk of him and his wife. That poor woman, I hope she has support around her” she was so lovely to have cared about this complete stranger. “How did he die?” She asked and I had to tell her because it would come out in the papers the next day “he was murdered” I could see tears form in her eyes. “that’s why we’re here. Could you tell us about the last time you spoke to Dr Logan?” Asked Mary as she took out her small note pad. “It was a long time ago.” She sat there trying to think back. “I had to cancel my appointment because I had emergency surgery on a little boy. Dr Logan said that he thought that I wasn’t taking his treatment seriously and that it was important for me to see him every week. He said he thought I was avoiding him and therefore avoiding my own mental health but I pointed out that I have to be at the hospital at the drop of a hat and that my patients are more important than seeing him. For some reason he sounded a bit too pushy for my liking but I think he was desperate for me to continue with my treatment so when my next appointment came around I decided not to go because he had made me angry by insinuating that a silly therapist session was more important than the life of a little boy.” Mary was scribbling things down on the notepad and then she said “did you hear from him again?” “Yes I think he must have asked his receptionist to call me a few times but I just ignored her calls. It’s something I always do. If I just ignore a situation and pretend everything is ok I think that it might just go away. That’s the reason I started seeing Dr Logan to begin with.” Amelia looked at me as Mary was writing and I could tell that she was only telling us all of this so that I could understand why she had ghosted me. “So what do you mean that’s why you started seeing him?” Asked Mary “I started treatment with him because my brother in law caught me talking to my husband and…” Mary waved her hand and smiled “sorry I thought you were saying that you were seeing him, as in a relationship” Suddenly the golf clubs in the corner fell over and all three of us stared at them because no one was near to them and it didn’t make sense that they would have moved. Amelia’s eyes were wide and Mary apologised “sorry I was just getting mixed up, you meant you were seeing him as a patient” Amelia nodded her head and got up and picked up the heavy golf bag and put it back in its place. “Do you need a hand?” I asked and she gave me a huge smile. “No thanks, that should do for now. Honestly I don’t know what you guys see in golf, it’s so boring” I broke away from our eye contact because I was hurt that she was referring to her husband then Mary interrupted us “is your husband here?” She asked and she looked suddenly pale “no” she said as she started to ring her hands together as she walked back over and sat down. She took a deep breath “my husband died five years ago” I felt like a complete and utter i***t, here I was jealous because of her big diamond rings and wedding photos “I know how Mrs Logan must feel, because it’s truly one of the worst things to happen to anyone.” She put her head down and I could feel the pain radiating from her. “What happened to your husband?” I asked before I could stop myself and her eyes filled with tears as she spoke “I was at work, I was performing emergency surgery on a young girl that had been involved in a car accident. The surgery had been successful but it had took hours and a team of us to save her. When I got home I found Richard here in the kitchen. The police said that it was a home robbery and that Richard had tried to stop them because the back door had been smashed in and there was a few things stolen. They never found the person that did it” she said as she wiped her tears. Mary put her hand across and squeezed her arm “I’m sorry Amelia, thank you for speaking to us. It must be very difficult for you” “that’s why I started seeing Dr Logan, I was in such a state, but as I say therapy isn’t for everyone” Just then I heard a loud voice shout “Millie are you home? How was Africa? did you bring me a present?” And a huge guy appeared in the kitchen, he looked at both me and Mary with a fake smile. I have to admit he was a handsome guy, he had piercing blue eyes and thick black hair and he was at least six and a half foot tall. He was wearing an expensive watch and a crisp white shirt and I could tell that he loved the gym. Amelia looked at him and he ran the couple of steps towards her because she was upset. She stood up and they hugged each other. She pulled away and I wanted to know who this guy was. “Robert, this is the police. They came to speak to me because Dr Logan, my therapist has died. They said he’s been murdered.” He let out a huge sigh and pulled her close to him. After a minute or two she pulled away from him but he still had his hands on her hips. I had heard her talk to someone called Robert on the phone and I had presumed it was her brother but by the way this guy was touching and looking at her I knew instantly that he had feelings for her. “This is my bother in law Robert, he’s my husband Richards twin brother” he shook both myself and Mary by the hand and said “well I hope you find whoever did this because you guys couldn’t find the animal that took my brother” Amelia gave him a look and then she apologised for him. “I’m sorry about him” she said and they both took a seat. He sat close to her and he had one hand on her back and one hand on her arm and he kept stroking her forearm and although I knew he was trying to comfort her I could tell he wanted her. “So how did Dr Logan die?” He asked and I couldn’t give this guy any details even if I wanted to. “It’s an ongoing inquiry so we can’t discuss it” Amelia shot him another dirty look and I could tell that she was pissed by how forward he was being with us. “Robert was the one to introduce me to Dr Logan. Robert is one of his patients too” then she turned to him “the detectives are going to speak to all of his patients, that’s why they’re here today” he nodded his head “well if there’s anything I can do to help” he looked at both myself and Mary and she was just about to start questioning him when I cut her off “as I say this is an ongoing process so if we can take your address we will be in contact” “can’t we just talk now?” He asked with a smirk. I had come up against dickheads like this before and I wasn’t about to let him think he was in control “No, I think we have took up enough of Dr Thompson’s time today and she’s clearly upset.” He nodded his head as I stood up I thought I could feel someone’s hand on my shoulder as if they wanted me to stay. I looked at Mary and she was already by the door and I wondered what that was “yeah Millie you should get to bed, you must be exhausted after your long flight home” said Robert and she gave me a little smile and I wanted to let her know that I cared for her more than I had ever cared about anyone before in my life but I stood up and thanked them both. “Robert lives right across the road, he’s at number 15” she said and Mary quickly jotted it down. He sat back down at the table and Mary and I headed towards the front door and Amelia was walking behind us with her head down. She looked like she had the weight of the world on her shoulders. Talking about Dr Logan’s murder had probably brought up all those past memories of losing her husband and I wanted to save her from her heartbreak. When Mary wasn’t looking I gently stroked her arm and she looked me in the eye and whispered “I’m sorry” I knew that she meant she was sorry for disappearing out of my life when she had told me she liked me and I just gave her a little smile. When we got to the door she said “it’s unbelievable that people can take someone else’s life, I spend every day trying to save people. It’s frightening to know that there are people out there that could do such a thing. When I think about that animal strangling him to death I just can’t understand how anybody could do that. It’s sick” Mary spun around and said “what?” And I knew that she had picked up on the fact that we hadn’t told Amelia how Dr Logan had died. “The man that killed my husband, I have dealt with knife attacks and gun shots in my line of work but when the police told me that someone had strangled Richard to death.. it’s just so cruel” Mary thanked her again and as she walked over to the car Amelia and I stood staring at each other and although I didn’t want to leave her she had made it clear before that she didn’t want to see me so I had to go. But the way she was looking at me gave me goosebumps and I said “thank you for your time today” she gave me a small smile and I couldn’t help but drag my eyes up and down her body. She looked incredible and I desperately wanted to speak to her about us but I managed to pull myself away. I got to the top of her drive way and a Bentley pulled in. A huge older guy got out and he took off his sunglasses and stared at me like he was going to kick the s**t out of me. He had the same blue eyes as Robert but his thick hair was silver. Even though he was standing there holding a bunch of roses this guy was seriously intimidating then I heard Robert shout “dad come in, Millie’s home from Africa” he slowly turned and headed to the house and I heard him say “there she is, my girl is home” I could understand why Richards brother and dad were still in her life but I couldn’t understand why they seemed a little hostile towards me. Maybe that was the real reason she didn’t want to start a proper relationship with me because she knew that they were protective of her. When I got into the car Mary said “well, what do you make of all this? It’s strange that both her husband and Dr Logan both died the same way” I stared out at Amelias house and said “I’m not sure, but there’s no such thing as a coincidence. Let’s get back to the station and look through his notes and phone records” she shook her head “they won’t be ready for us to view them until tomorrow, fancy a pint?” “no, I’m going to call it a day, we have an early start tomorrow” Mary looked at me as I drove away and said “she’s so f*****g hot, I think I would kill to get my hands on her” and we both laughed and Mary was right, even sitting there with a tear stained face Amelia was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen and I needed to see her again. But I wondered what I was getting myself in to. Because clearly there was a connection between the deaths of her husband Richard and Dr Logan.
