Chapter 1:The Bond
Part 1
The full moon hung high above the Bloodmoon Pack grounds, glowing silver against the dark sky.
Lyla Morgan stood at the edge of the gathering, her fingers trembling slightly as she smoothed the wrinkles from her simple white dress. The clearing was alive with laughter, music, and the low murmurs of wolves celebrating the annual Mate Ceremony—the night when many wolves discovered their destined partners.
For most, it was the happiest night of their lives.
For Lyla, it was the most terrifying.
Her wolf stirred uneasily inside her chest.
Something is coming, the voice whispered in her mind.
Lyla swallowed and glanced around the clearing. Members of the pack danced around the bonfire, their shadows flickering against the tall pine trees. The smell of roasted meat and sweet wine filled the air.
Everyone looked happy.
Everyone except her.
“Why are you standing here alone?”
Lyla turned to see her best friend, Maya, approaching with two cups of berry wine.
“You look like you’re about to faint,” Maya teased, handing her one.
Lyla forced a smile. “I’m just nervous.”
“About finding your mate?” Maya raised an eyebrow. “You should be excited. Tonight could change your life.”
Lyla looked toward the center of the clearing where the Alpha stood surrounded by warriors.
Alpha Damon Blackwood.
The most powerful wolf in the region.
Tall. Dark-haired. Broad-shouldered. His presence alone made the air feel heavier. Even from across the clearing, Lyla could feel the weight of his authority pressing against her chest.
Every woman in the pack admired him.
Most feared him.
Lyla quickly looked away.
“There’s nothing to be nervous about,” Maya continued. “You might meet someone amazing tonight.”
Lyla didn’t respond.
Because deep down… she felt something strange.
Something pulling at her chest like an invisible thread tightening with every passing moment.
Her wolf stirred again.
Mate.
Lyla’s breath caught.
“What?” she whispered under her breath.
Maya blinked. “Did you say something?”
Before Lyla could answer, the music stopped.
A sudden silence spread across the clearing.
Every head turned toward the stone platform near the bonfire where Alpha Damon stepped forward.
His voice was deep and commanding.
“Tonight,” he said, “the Bloodmoon Pack honors the sacred bond that ties us together. The Moon Goddess has destined each of us a mate.”
The crowd cheered.
Lyla barely heard them.
Her heart was racing.
Faster.
Faster.
The invisible pull inside her chest grew stronger.
Painfully strong.
And then—
Damon’s head snapped up.
His dark eyes scanned the crowd.
Searching.
Lyla froze.
Her wolf rose violently inside her.
MATE.
The word exploded in her mind.
Her breath caught in her throat as Damon’s gaze locked onto her across the clearing.
Time seemed to stop.
The air thickened.
Every instinct in her body screamed the same truth.
Alpha Damon Blackwood…
was her mate.
Part 2
Lyla’s heart pounded so loudly she was certain everyone could hear it.
No.
This had to be a mistake.
Not him.
Anyone but him.
But the moment Damon began walking toward her, the mate bond tightened painfully in her chest.
Each step he took felt like thunder shaking the ground beneath her feet.
The crowd parted for him instantly.
Whispers spread through the clearing.
“Why is the Alpha walking toward her?”
“Isn’t that Lyla Morgan?”
“The omega girl?”
Heat rushed to Lyla’s face.
She had never been important in the pack. She wasn’t a warrior. She wasn’t from a powerful family.
She was simply Lyla—the quiet girl who worked in the pack kitchens and kept to herself.
And yet the Alpha was walking straight toward her.
Her wolf trembled inside her.
He’s our mate.
Damon stopped only a few steps away.
Up close, his presence was overwhelming. His scent—dark pine, smoke, and something dangerously intoxicating—wrapped around her senses.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Damon stared at her like he was trying to solve an impossible puzzle.
Confusion flickered in his dark eyes.
Then irritation.
Then something colder.
“You,” he said quietly.
The single word sliced through her heart.
Lyla lowered her gaze, unable to meet his eyes.
Her voice came out barely above a whisper.
“Alpha…”
The mate bond pulsed between them.
Everyone in the clearing had gone silent.
They were watching.
Waiting.
Damon inhaled slowly as if confirming something he already knew.
His jaw tightened.
And then he said the words that shattered Lyla’s world.
“You are my mate.”
Gasps erupted through the crowd.
But Lyla barely heard them.
Because the next words were far worse.
Damon’s eyes turned hard as stone.
“But I refuse to accept you.”
The clearing fell into stunned silence.
Lyla’s heart stopped.
Her wolf howled in agony inside her mind.
Damon’s voice rang across the crowd.
“I, Alpha Damon Blackwood, reject you, Lyla Morgan, as my mate.”
The words struck her like a physical blow.
Pain exploded through her chest as the bond between them cracked violently.
Tears filled her eyes as she struggled to breathe.
The entire pack watched.
Watched as their Alpha rejected his own mate.
Humiliation burned through Lyla’s body like fire.
Damon turned away as if she were nothing.
As if she had never mattered.
As if he hadn’t just destroyed her soul.
But as Lyla collapsed to her knees, something deep inside her stirred.
Something ancient.
Something powerful.
And far away, beyond the mountains, another Alpha suddenly felt the echo of a broken bond.
His golden eyes snapped open in the darkness.
“My mate,” he growled softly.
And somewhere in the Bloodmoon Pack…
she was crying.
