The Black Dawn

Sofia's POV When darkness consumes me, I expect it to remain dark. That I will lose consciousness. But instead, it feels like I fall into a dark hole without end. When I suddenly stand on my feet as if I have never fallen from the beginning, I sway anxiously and my stomach turns like I am going to throw up. The darkness is total, compact in a way. When lit, my hands instinctively rise above my eyes to protect them from the intense light. With my eyes closed, I hear sounds around me. Metal against metal, shoes against concrete floors, and a mumble that slowly rises to an intense thunder. When I peek out between my fingers, the air gets stuck in my throat. I'm back how can I be back? The warehouse that serves as a market and auction, where my sisters were sold, is in full swing around me. Panicked, I stand frozen in my place. Was it a dream, Jacob and Lucas? Do they not exist? Am I still with Hugo? My breathing is shallow and rapid where I stand searching for a way out. Suddenly everything freezes in place. Everything is completely still as if time has stopped. But I can still breathe, move. "I'm sorry it was this place, but it's our only common denominator. There was no other choice." says a female voice behind me. When I turn on my heels completely, I see the young girl from the market. She who together with the elderly bought Mia. She who looked me in the eyes and who smiled. In a way, I wish I was a wolf now so I could have growled at her. Instinctively, I take a step back. She calmly takes off her hood and continues to smile. "Sofia, please. Take it easy. We're not here, not for real and I'm not here to hurt you." She says prayerfully. "You bought her" I hissed angrily, "you stood here and let them buy us. What makes you think I trust you?" She sighs heavily. "Please Sofia, I'm a prisoner just like you. I could choose to be here as much as you could. The Auroras own me because of my ability to see what has not yet happened. When we were here and I saw you, I saw a way out. The New moons Alpha will want his Luna and he can stop them with my help!" She falls silent and lets me take in what she said. "Mia says hello, she and Tobias' sister Tina are with me. But we do not have much time" "Does Mia know what she is, what she can become?" I wonder. "She knows that we are witches, that she was bought for a reason, and that there is a man just for her. She jokes heavily that she has become a princess in a fairy tale for children, waiting for her prince. Tina and I try to keep her position as future Luan as secret as possible but she has a very strong aura for a human being!" the woman in front of me chuckles and I can not help but fall into it. It really sounds like Mia, strong and confident. "Okay, so if I believe you. Who are you?" "My name is Stella and I am one of the Auroras. But as I said, under duress. I have no interest in sacrificing a lot of creatures to achieve world domination. And the women here are not suited to rule the world." She mutters the last part. "Okay, so how do we do this?" "I've briefly told the Alpha through your body that they're ready. But you and I have more time!" She says and settles down on the floor in the middle of the frozen market. I follow her example but move a little closer. Okay, I have to listen carefully so I can tell Jacob, Lucas, and the Alpha when I get home. Home? It feels like home, the warm cozy feeling that spreads in my body clouds my eyes. Stella looks at me questioningly so I shake my head briefly. "Nothing, I just. Sorry. Continue" I mumble. “Okay, I don’t know how much you or the Alpha knows about the Atra Aurora so here comes a quick summary: Atra Aurora means black dawn. It’s an order of witches. We have some warlocks but they are subordinates. They have collected fourteen of every major species, like humans, witches, werewolves, werebears, vamps, trolls, dragons, and so on. Seven men and seven women to sacrifice at the winter solstice. If they sacrifice them all before the sun comes up the world will go dark. I know that the werewolves believe in the goddess Selene. In this part of the world people believed, a very long time ago, that the moon was a god and the sun a goddess hunted over the sky by two magic wolves Hate and Skoll. And they predicted that the wolves would one day swallow the god and goddess and start the end of the world. This was called Ragnarök. The Auroras believe two things, one it's possible to “swallow” the sun and moon to start the end of the world. And that if they control the sun and moon, they will control the world and all living creatures. The sacrifice of magic-blood is going to be so big and give the Auroras a tremendous amount of power to use, this is how they are going to capture the sun and moon!” Stella takes a deep breath after giving all that information. My head is spinning and I’m trying really hard to remember mythology from school. The story about Hate and Skoll does sound familiar.  “Okay, the moon is a goddess, the sun is a god. They will be taken by the witches at the solstice if they are able to harness enough power from the magic-blood sacrificed!” I summarize briefly to a nodding Stella.  “Yes!”  We sat quietly for a while, just contemplating the situation. The world around us slowly starts to move. And Stella looked at me with panic in her eyes. "I need to go!" She says and rises from the floor. "Wait, you haven't told me where we can find you?!" I shout at her, also panicking.  "I'll find you again, now when you have let me in onec it will be easier. If it's alright with you?" She asks while starting to evaporate in front of my eyes so I nod hastily. She gives me a soft smile, and a little wave. "I'll see you soon Sofia!"  "Tell Mia I'm coming for her!" I whisper and wave back. The market starts moving in reverse and suddenly the light is off and I'm sucked up towards nothing. It's like being underwater rising up to the surface but there is no water. The awakening is the same as breaking the surface. And I fly up with a loud gasp expecting to lie on the floor of the office, instead, I’m in a soft bed in a beautiful room. The walls are midnight blue with light gray curtains and dark furniture and hardwood floors. Looking around the room I see Jacob sitting in an armchair asleep with his mouth opened like always. What's with these guys and sleeping in chairs?  “Are you kidding me?” I throw out before I can stop myself making Jacob jump up looking around. Skittish much? I start laughing at how cute he is making him growl playfully when discovering there is no emergency. “Why are you sitting there?” I wonder through the laughter.  “You were sleeping” He mumbles  “So, go and sleep too!” I reason.  “Not leaving you,” he says, slumping back down in the chair. My laughing is over and I bit my lower lip thinking about it. They seem so adamant about not leaving me, him, and Lucas. I have accepted them, have I not? I move over and pat the spot beside me on the bed. He looks at me apprehensively and then he smiles, a smile that could melt anyone's heart. He comes over and sits on the bed. I lie down on the pillows showing him how it's done raising an eyebrow. He follows my lead and lies down. For a moment we lay there looking at the ceiling, quietly. His fingers suddenly touch mine, so I grab his hand and hold it. I feel him relax, and then let me go. I can feel a shift in the bed when he turns to his side, so I squint his way. He is lying there looking at me, I turn to face him and we just look at each other. He really is good-looking, like too good-looking. It makes me wonder, Why me? "Angel, stop doubting yourself. I can see the wheels turning in your head. Believe me, you're beautiful!" "Thank you!" I whisper. "Jacob, I'm not tired. And we need to talk about the Auroras..." He nods. "So tell me!" And I do, I tell him all about Stella, all she said and that she will come back.
