The New Moon

Sofia's POV After explaining everything to Jacob, neither he nor I were sure what to do with the information. All we have received is a background story, no directly helpful information on how to proceed. It is with a deep sigh that I give up my attempts to solve this for the moment. So we lie there, facing each other, and just exist. He smells so good, the heat and the smell make me sigh again, but it's a small sigh, a satisfied sigh. I could lie here forever! "My angel, do you want lunch?" he mumbles absently and takes a deep breath. "Soon, let's stay. Just a little longer!" I pleaded with my eyes closed. He hums in response and takes my hands in his, gently. "You're not afraid of me," he murmurs. It's a statement and not a question. And I hum in response, I'm not. "You smell good!" I stated briefly. It makes him chuckle and raise our hands to his face. Slowly, he rubs his nose against my fingers. "What has that got to do with anything?" he mumbles with his lips against my fingers. "Nothing! But it's true!" "You smell heavenly" he sighs, "like Christmas!" "Do I smell like meatballs and ham?" I laughed. "Cloves and oranges!" he laughs and kisses my fingers. An act that makes me freeze in the middle of a breath. An impulse to pull my fingers back came over me, but I left them in his warm hands. For some reason, I'm nervous. "Calm down!" he comforts and returns to rubbing his nose against my fingers. "Do you remember? You don't have to be afraid of us. Not everyone is like him." "I know, I know!" I breathed. "He is an exception ... but you don’t directly belong to the majority either. You're pretty unique!" “Well, maybe!” He chuckles, and I can almost see his smug face in front of me through my closed eyes. "Jacob, can we go out?" "On a date?" "Outside!" "On a date?" "Are you asking me out?" I giggled. "It was you who asked!" He laughs out loud and makes me open my eyes to look at him. His face is beautiful when he laughs, his eyes shine. Those green eyes! "Jacob, do you want to go on a date with me?" I asked seriously. It immediately silences him, he looks at me in surprise! "Yes!" he answers just as seriously. "Damn! Now I have to plan a date, I don't even know where I am!" I laughed a little nervously. "You are here, with me. With the New moon! And as you did the asking, I can handle the planning!" "Well, teamwork!" I giggled.   When it's time for lunch, we leave the room and go down. I was absolutely right that the double doors on the right went into a large dining room. I can’t let go of the feeling that this is a hotel. The hall is bright with sheer curtains that let in lots of light through the windows that reach from floor to ceiling. Everywhere there are round tables with space for anything from five to ten people. There are a lot of people sitting down at the tables, and I feel worried there are a lot of new faces, and they all look curiously at me. In an attempt to calm down, I stayed close to Jacob. He holds my hand and leads me between the many tables to a slightly larger one where his brother sits. He is talking in a low voice with a man cradling a small child. I guess a girl based on the purple dress.  As we reach the table, Johnny, the Alpha, looks up and smiles at us. The other man stands to introduce himself and the little girl. “Hi, Sofia! My name is Isaac, and this is my daughter Isabella.” He says and reaches for my hand! "Hi, nice to meet you, Isaac! Oh hi, Isabella ..." I answered in a slightly lighter tone than before at the end and caught the little girl's attention. She can't be more than six months old. She focuses on me and gives me the most radiant smile ever, and I melt. When she starts waving her arms and reaching for me with such speed that Isaac jerks forward and almost loses his grip on her, I cannot stop myself from giggling at her. "She likes you!" Says Isaac and holds on tight to the wiggling girl. "Hey sweetie, you're a strong girl, aren’t you!" I cooed and leaned towards her. "Strong, yep! But not always so easy to deal with!" He says with a sigh. ”That’s why mommy is taking a nap, right darling!?" he continued towards Isabella. A long buffet table is set and the smell of food reaches me. I sigh contentedly and Jacob chuckles, amused at my reaction. "Sit down, and I'll fix food for both of us." He says and pulls out a chair for me. I smiled gratefully and sat down. "Sofia, would you mind keeping Izzy here for me while I fetch some food too?" Isaac wonders and hands the waving baby to me. "Not at all!" I said and took her. I put her on the table and placed my elbows at the sides of her and held her up with my arms against her back and supported her head with my fingers lightly. Her soft brown eyes keep eye contact with me and she babbles contentedly. I smile and nod at her and confirm her incoherent small talk. We talk and laugh together, completely engrossed in each other. When she stretches her little fingers towards my face and grabs my cheeks, I melt again. She is so lovely! Two rough hands on my shoulders and Luca's dark voice mumbling with his lips against my ear breaks the spell. "You, are, incredibly beautiful right now!" he breathes and makes me blush. I turned my head a little and rubbed my nose against his cheek in response. But it's the next voice that takes my attention! "Sofia?" "Tobias?!" I shrieked and turned on the chair while still holding Izzy. "Hello!" He says and sits down next to me. "Hi!" "How are you?!" "Okay, I guess. You? "I'm fine ..." he says tentatively and looks at me. He has clean new clothes that fit but he needs a haircut. The fringe is long enough for him to put it behind his ear. He continues in a low voice, "Sofia, I'm sorry, I didn't know." I shake my head quietly to interrupt him. "It was not your fault, all this is due to him. Now we just need to correct his wrongdoings. Then we can forget him. Okay?" Tobias nods and sighs heavily. I lift Izzy down onto my lap and let her lean back towards me. She holds my fingers and brings them to her mouth. I let her drool over my knuckles and toothless chew on them. I suspect that there are teeth in progress and it usually itches. “You really need a haircut, by the way!” I said with an eyebrow raised at him. The small warm child in my arms slowly gets heavier and my fingers slide quickly out of her grip. Just in time for Isaac to be back with his food and Jacob to come with mine, she had fallen asleep. Lucas and Tobias leave to fetch food for themselves and quickly return and settle down. We eat together and it feels nice despite the large room. All around me, the conversations flow freely and I sit with a sleeping Izzy and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Both Lucas and Jacob give me looks that make me blush now and then. But they say nothing. Tobias and I talk. Isaac asks some questions but nothing too personal. He tells me about Charlotte, Isabella's mother. She sounds like a lovely person and he promises to introduce us. "She will love you! You are absolutely incredible, you made her fall asleep, just like that!" "Oh she's an angel, and I'm used to it, my little sisters were unbearable when their teeth started coming! Give it two years and it will be time for them to start dropping them instead ..." I say and trail off when the realization suddenly strikes me. They will never lose their teeth, never get a visit from the tooth fairy. Isaac's terrified face must reflect mine and I couldn’t stop the tears. I apologize briefly and gently hand over the sleeping Izzy to her father before turning around to leave hastily. The nice lunch took a sharp turn and I didn't want to cry in front of them all. Once out on the porch, I turn right and walk around to the side of the house. I leaned against the wall and slid down to the ground. My eyes are clouded with tears and I have difficulty breathing. The loss is so great that it's difficult to think and I start to hyperventilate and completely break down again and cry. I cried so hard my head and heart hurt. I bury my face against my knees and cover my head with my arms.  When strong arms lift me in a warm embrace, I don't fight it. The wonderful scent of freshly cut grass fills my mind. Lucas lets me cry uninhibited in his arms while he slowly caresses my back and buries his face in my hair. "Sorry ..." I mutter embarrassed when my brain has restarted and is working again. "You have nothing to apologize about angel, you can be however sad you need!" he breathes. We sat quietly outside for a while. I lifted my head and put my cheek against his shoulder. When I finally look up and meet his fantastic hazel eyes, it feels a little better, a little easier. "Lucas, I want to go home now." "As you wish, Honey."
