Cassian's POV
It seemed that I had finally been cornered by my cunning grandfather, who had used my compassion against me. I realized I had no choice but to marry, or I would lose everything. I couldn’t let that happen.
"Are there any criteria for choosing my bride?" I knew I had already been defeated.
Victory. Satisfaction. Joy. These emotions flickered in my grandfather's dark eyes before he blinked and replied, "Nothing specific. She just needs to come from a respectable family."
"Alright, I’ll do my best." I took a deep breath and left his study.
"Where are you going?" My grandfather asked. "Your grandmother is still waiting for you in the garden for afternoon tea."
I glanced back at the once-mighty Alpha, now with a full head of white hair. I flashed him a grin. "Tell her I need to go find my unknown bride right away. I have to leave. Goodbye, Grandfather."
I didn’t wait for him to answer before stepping out of his mansion. I got into my Bugatti and revved the engine.
I imagined my grandmother was probably waiting in the garden, ready to set me up with another blind date. As soon as I showed up, she would force me to meet a she-wolf she thought would suit me.
If they were so eager to see me married and have children like Sean, then I might as well choose my bride myself. There was one person I could think of who could help me get out of this predicament.
I had no idea how Nydia Skinner would react to my proposal, but it was worth a try.
It had been a while since I last saw her. I’d heard a few months ago that she had been rejected by her mate. I knew she was also facing pressure from her father to marry, and I believed we might be able to help each other out.
About an hour later, I finally arrived at the Cold Moon Pack Alpha’s pack house.
Everything about the place felt too familiar. I took the elevator, punched in the floor number, and, once I reached the office, walked straight toward her door.
"Sir! Sir..." Her loyal receptionist blocked my path. "You haven’t registered or made an appointment. You can’t just barge into Alpha Nydia’s office."
I ignored her and continued forward. My sole purpose was to meet Nydia. I opened her office door and slammed it shut with force, leaving the receptionist’s shocked face behind.
"Who...?" Nydia, who had been engrossed in her work, began to speak, the door frame creaking.
"Nydia, I need a bride, and you need a groom. Are you interested in getting married?" I looked directly into her beautiful hazel eyes, cutting straight to the point.
"What..." Nydia finally lifted her gaze from the mountain of paperwork on her desk, her face filled with shock as she stared at me.
"Cassian, are you drunk?" Nydia rolled her eyes before returning her attention to her work.
"No."
"So, you're on drugs."
"No."
"Then you must be insane."
"I'm not."
"Fine, I refuse your proposal." Nydia nodded indifferently. "Now, can you leave my office? I'm too busy."
"Nydia, don’t be so quick to reject me." I sat down on the sofa in her office. "I mean, we could have a contract marriage. You know, it's quite popular in TV shows these days."
"Cassian, are you an i***t? How could you come up with such a stupid idea? This is not funny." Nydia glared at me.
I raised my hands in a surrendering gesture. "Nydia, relax. I just thought we could help each other out."
"I don’t see how this idiotic proposal benefits me." Nydia crossed her arms as she walked over to my side.
"Nydia, don’t be so cold. Aren’t we friends? Why not help each other out of our predicaments?" I noticed her attitude was softening, so I pressed on. "I know Ashley rejected you not long ago. Since you two were paired up at 18, your father has been putting him down. He’s become so insecure. I think you could give him a push. Even if he truly doesn’t love you anymore, this contract marriage won’t affect you. We can divorce in a year."
Nydia frowned. "But what’s in it for you? Why do you suddenly want to get married?"
I let out a heavy sigh. "Because my grandfather said that if I don’t find my bride before his birthday, I’ll lose my inheritance to the title of Alpha. And you’re also facing pressure to marry. We’re in the same situation."
Nydia raised an eyebrow, seeming to seriously consider my proposal. After a moment, she nodded. "I hope we cooperate well."
---
As I stood at the altar for my wedding with Nydia, something strange happened.
Suddenly, my wolf, Renault, went crazy. He howled non-stop, bouncing around with excitement. It left me utterly confused.
Then, a faint scent of roses filled the air.
I inhaled deeply, my nostrils filled with more of the rose fragrance. After that, the scent of vanilla swept in, like the smell of a romantic pink rose cake. I looked toward the entrance of the banquet hall, and what I saw nearly made me lose control.
A woman, draped in an elegant white wedding dress, walked into the venue. It felt like a dream. Her slightly flushed beautiful face, her soft brown eye makeup that highlighted her sparkling blue eyes, and her full pink lips that seemed to long for a kiss—it made my heart skip a beat.
Her dress was fitted, showing off every curve of her body, with lace detailing and silver accents, designed with an off-shoulder style. The skirt was long but light. As she walked, the hem floated above the ground, and just seeing her was enough to bring tears to my eyes. I swore I had never felt this happy before.
Mate! She’s our mate! I told you she’d come for us! My wolf howled in excitement, and I felt my eyes widen. My mind and ears couldn’t believe what I was seeing and hearing. "Our mate is wearing a wedding dress to steal the wedding, oh my god!"
My heart was racing in my chest. All I wanted was to grab her.
Oh my god, she’s walking toward me. Happiness flooded my body.
My wolf screamed in my ear, "Mine!"
Then, another person barged into the venue. I knew it was Ashley, just like Nydia and I had planned. He was bound to show up, knowing how much he loved Nydia.
He confessed his feelings to Nydia, and then he took her away.
