Ch 1 Claire Pov
She was on her way to her last day of her job, working at the University of Cumbria. She's a professor of art and design. She loves it. She went to university here herself to study art and then decided to get her teaching degree as well. She loves the university, and when she qualified with top marks, they offered her a teaching job. Her favourite professor was getting ready to retire and wanted her to take over. She jumped at it. It's been a blessing really, the past few years have been hard mentally and physically on her. She arrived at her office, getting her work ready for the day. She heard a knock at her office door. Come in, "she shouted. In walked Liam one of her brightest students. "Sorry to interrupt Professor Wood, but here is the course work. I meant to hand in yesterday. Sorry, it's late. " Liam said. There is no need to apologise, Liam. She was going to give you an extension and let Professor Marks know that. How is your mum? "She okay fighting through it. She's a tough woman. I can't believe you're leaving." he said. She is a very tough woman. She will get through it. She will check on you both while she's away. You know you both mean a lot to her. This is something she needs to do for herself. She'll be back. She will see you later anyway. She is coming for a farewell dinner at your home. Right off you go, get to class as she has to do the same. She watched him leave and go to class. Poor boy. She's known his mum for years. When he first came to the university they was a mix-up in the dorms, and her place went to someone else. So she rented a room off Lorna and never left, lived with them for years until she got married. Lorna is a wonderful person and she worked in the canteen until she retired last year. Unfortunately, she has been diagnosed with cancer. She is fighting and doing well. She hates to leave her, but Lorna is with her through a lot of her divorce, and Lorna knows she needs this break. She went to her last class. She walked into the class to everyone clapping. Gifts on her desk. You all shouldn't have. She's coming back. Thank you all, tho. She's very touched. They was a big bunch of flowers, chocolates, a large travel water bottle, and a Cumbria University t-shirt, and all her students signed it. She actually felt tears at that one. Thank you she'll cherish this. She finished her classes. She went to her boss, Professor Tricks office. She nodded he said, "Come in." She did. "Hello, leaver, what do you want?" he said laughing. Haha, it's very funny. Don't make her feel worse than she already does. "Sorry, how are you feeling?" Professor Trick said. Good, she's sad to leave, but she's looking forward to a new adventure for a while and exploring America. "Well, enjoy yourself and keep in touch. I'll check on Lorna and Liam for you, " he said. Thank you she would appreciate that. She'd feel better leaving knowing people would be they for them. She left and went back to her car. She drove to Lorna's house, who was only a 5 min drive away. Just lives just outside the university. She pulled onto the drive. Got out knocked. She didn't answer, so she walked in. She was asleep on the sofa. Lorna she touched her hand. She woke up startled. "Oh, so sorry, Claire. I was meant to make you dinner." Lorna said. Dont be silly. We can just order a takeaway. Less clean up. She called the local pizza place. Ordered pizza and chips, and Liam walked in at the same time. She's guessing you smelt food, Liam?. "Hello, yes, pizza. How are you, mom?" he asked. Giving her a kiss on her cheek. "I'm fine, son, just tired. The treatment is going well. Just tiring me out. I'll be fine tomorrow, just the day I have it hits me by evening. " Lorna said. They all ate, laughed. It's was nice to reminisce, and she cried. A full evening of emotions. She hugged them both. "When do you leave?" Lorna asked. Her flight is at 2 pm tomorrow afternoon. She is going to finish packing her huge backpack. She is probably going to tip over, but oh well. Lorna laughed. She said her goodbyes and got back in the car. Drove back to Grandma's cottage in the Lake District, where she grew up as a child. She moved into the cottage, just outside of her hometown with her grandma when she was 5 years old. After her parents sadly died. Her father died of cancer when she was 3 years old. He was an older dad in his 60s. He was a handsome man with dark hair and dark eyes. She remembes bits of him but not a lot. Her mother sadly died when she was 4 years old. She was very depressed her grandma said she died of a broken heart. She couldn't deal with the pain, and she died. That's all she really knows about her mother's death. Grandma doesn't really like to talk about it, or her really hurts too much. She was beautiful black hair down to her bum. Bright green eyes. Grandma said she moved us out of our hometown to here because she found it too hard to be around everyone and too many memories of her mother. She pulled up at the cottage. It was a nice cottage, surrounded by the dark green forest. The cottage itself it beautiful. Grandma takes care of it well. It's a two bedroom, separate kitchen, living area. Two bathrooms on suites. It's been in her family a long time, and it was her grandparents on her fathers side. It was a lovely place to live. She never felt without. Grandma gave her everything she needed. She walked in and shouted her name. She responded "In the kitchen, my dear," Grandma said. She walked in, and the woman was dancing while she made popcorn. She was so lively for her age. "How was your dinner with Lorna and Liam?" she asked. Good, Lorna feels like she's taking the treatment well. She'll keep in touch with her and send her pictures and video calls. "I'll check in on her, too. Don't worry, she's in good hands. Do you wanna watch a movie, " Grandma said. Sure, she'll just go shower and change, and we can watch something. You pick just nothing horror and travelling or camping she really doesn't need the nightmares before going away. Grandma laughed. She did just that showered, changed. Found grandma sitting with popcorn, and she put on a cheesy 80s romcom. It was nice before she left for a year or so. She has no set return date at the moment. "So what are your final plans, Claire?" she asked. She has an early 8am breakfast with the girls in the morning. Then back here. Check that she packed everything she wants and needs. Are you still driving her to the airport? "Yes, of course. What time are we setting off?" she asked. About 10ish, she had to be at the airport for about 11 am. Well, she's going to go to bed as she has an early breakfast with the girls. Night, grandma. She gave her a peck on the cheek and went to bed. She went to her room. She moved back here about 18 months ago. Her childhood room. Not that's she'd know. Her grandma fully redecorated her room. Fresh new start, she said. Her divorce was 12 months ago. Their separation was the final nail in the coffin of their 6 year marriage. She met Luke at university when they were 18. He was studying to be a lawyer. He was fun, laid back, and loving. She loved him, and his family loved her even. We dated for about 2 years, he proposed she said yes married in a big wedding in her town. After 2 years of marriage, we decided to try for a baby. After a year of trying. We went to see a doctors. He gave us different options. We decided to try IVF 3 times over the next couple of years and, unfortunately, didn't work. It broke down our marriage, arguments, and blaming each other. Cheating on his side. She was faithful she still loved him even tho she was going through hell. After the cheating, she thinks it was just an excuse to part ways. They had an amicable divorce. Sold the house, cars, split savings, and split everything down the middle. We haven't spoken for the past year. He moved to London to a new law firm about 6 months ago. One of her friends did tell her he has a new girlfriend who is pregnant. So clearly now she was the problem. She cried her heart out that night she found out. He tried calling her a few times over the last few weeks. She can't bring herself to speak with him. It's one of the reasons she decided to get away. She doesn't want to hear or see anything about him. It's not his fault. Clearly, it wasn't meant to be, but it doesn't mean it hurts any less. So she handed in her notice at work 3 months ago. Sold her car. She's been using her grandma car for work. She's using all her savings and money from the divorce to go travelling with. Her parents left her a very large sum of money. She used some of it for uni, but once she was earning, she's never touched again. She feels like they'd want her to do something fun. Her grandma agreed. She doesn't hate Luke, but it's has put her off finding someone else and ever trying for children. She'd have to explain that straight away. She can't have any, so don't ask. Her grandma thinks we just wasn't compatible. Honestly, she just didn't like him. Never thought he was good enough for her. Too career driven. He was always jealous of her success. Always said things were easy for her, and everything landed at her feet. Was never that's she worked harder than anyone or was talented. You're just lucky he's always said. When she thinks back now was always red flag between them. It wasn't always him she did her fair share of the drama. She now knows it wasn't meant to be. She looked at the clock. 1am, she better get some sleep. Meeting her girls in the morning. In the village town centre. They won't be late.
