Chapter 27: The fight

True to his word, when I was all dressed and in the kitchen helping Sheila, an hour passed by before Fenris appeared behind me and kissed my neck. “You want me to help?” He asked. I was struggling cutting the giant potatoes but said, “no, it’s fine, you’re an alpha wolf you’re not meant to help with this stuff.” He snorted at that and said, “that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard, and the stupidest rule. Move.” He nudged me with his hip and took over with the cutting. Sheila had stopped what she was doing and just stood staring at him, transfixed. He clearly felt her eyes on him because after he’d put the cut potatoes in the pot he looked at her coldly and said, “what?” “Nothing, sorry, we all heard you chose to accept her as your true mate, but we thought it was only for business reasons when you take over the pack.” Smiling, she added, “I’m glad that’s not the only reason.” Jax walked into the kitchen out of nowhere, I hadn’t seen him since he’d rejected me and I didn’t understand him either. He wasn’t really talking to me and still seemed in a bad mood, but when Fenris put his arm around my waist, resting his hand on my hip, Jax came over and pushed himself between us, forcing Fenris to let go and move away from me. “What you cooking?” Jax asked. “Um, a casserole,” I stuttered slightly, not prepared for him to actually talk to me. He gave a nod and said, “nice, I’d help, but I’m s.hit at cooking and would probably give food poisoning to everyone, and then mum would be convinced the killer in me tried to purposely murder everyone.” He rolled his eyes being serious, but I burst into laughter, I couldn’t help it. For the first time in a while, Jax looked down at me and smiled. I was stirring the food cooking in the pot and Jax put his hand over mine. “I can help you with this at least,” he grinned. He was really up in my personal space, he had one hand leaning on the counter beside me while he stood pressed up behind me. He smelt so good, and I loved having him this close to me, he wore a muscle fit t-shirt, so I could see his black and grey tattoo sleeve that stopped at his wrist. Just as the pain had started easing a little from his rejection, it came back. I tried not to cry, it was hard with him this close to me, but not wanting me, his scent filled my nose, the fresh cold night air, vanilla and power. I loved everything about Jax, and I think I had even before he’d been revealed as my true mate. It was stupid to want a werewolf who was also a serial killer, I was drawn to the danger of him, the power of him knowing he could protect me and keep me safe, and obviously, his god like good looks didn’t help. I turned around so that we were chest to chest, and I wasn’t sure if I made things worse with our faces inches apart. “Jax,” I breathed. “Hmm?” “Give me space.” “Why?” I put my hand against his chest and moved him arm’s length away from me, I could feel him leaning against my hand, so I kept it there to keep him from moving back against me. “You don’t want me, remember?” Fenris had left us to our drama and was busy helping Sheila. I wasn’t sure I liked how much she was flirting with Fenris, but he didn’t seem to be reciprocating. Jax drew my attention back to him and said, “it’s complicated, Rose, it’s not as simple as me not wanting you.” “What is it then?” He shook his head, refusing to answer me. “Is there someone else?” I asked. Maybe there was, I didn’t know. He neither denied nor confirmed the question. I knew he wouldn’t answer anything he didn’t want to, so I said, “whatever it is you can’t be doing this, you can’t reject me, but still get all up in my personal space and tease me or flirt, you know I want love and nothing casual, I don’t want to be used. Your rejection really hurt Jax, you said it can’t kill you, but my heart feels otherwise, all day I’ve felt like I’ve been dying from a broken heart, being with Fenris has helped, and I was just starting to feel a little bit better, and now you’re here again, and so is the pain.” Jax ignored what I’d said and asked, “did he f***k you?” “Jax!” He grew angry and asked again, “did he f***k you Rose?” “None of your business.” Jax ignored me and dropped to his knees. “What are you doing!” I hissed when he shoved his face in my crotch and sniffed. I jumped back and he stood up. “I can smell you tried to clean up after, but I can still smell what you did.” It was my turn to grow angry, I really didn’t get angry very often, but he was being unfair. “Why do you care? You rejected me, he didn’t and he has been nice to me, if anyone deserved to take my virginity it was him, why would I lose it to someone who’s been mean to me, rejected me, but still thinks it’s ok to mess with my feelings and flirt?” “So you did lose it to him.” “Apparently some magical woo-hoo stuff happens, so I’ll just be a virgin until both you and Romulus take my virginity.” Jax looked surprised at that like he hadn’t known, and I could have sworn I saw relief on his face. “Do you want to accept me now?” I asked. “No.” “Then go away and leave me alone, please.” He grew as scarily cold and unreadable as Fenris could be, and I turned my back on him, trying to ignore the fear Jax produced in me. I went back to stirring, but felt him come up behind me, he was pressed up against me like before, his lips against my ear, but this time it wasn’t comforting, it was threatening. “The only reason my brother wants you is because the mate bond forces him to want you, remember before the bond he wanted nothing to do with you, didn’t even like you let alone want you. You’re nothing to him, this stupid f.ucking mate bond has put him under your f.ucking spell and I won’t fall for it,” he whispered into my ear and then he walked off. Jax hadn’t been that cruel or nasty since before we’d escaped the asylum. I broke down into heaving sobs and both Fenris, and Sheila looked over at me. Fenris came over and pulled me into his arms. “What’s wrong babe?” I kind of just sobbed and blubbered what had happened, by some miracle, he understood me and grew scarily angry, but he was different to Jax, whereas Jax was hot-tempered and fiery, Fenris was icy and cold. He let go of me and went looking for Jax. “What are you doing?” I asked tearfully, but he was already gone. A few minutes later, a commotion outside had everyone making their way out to see what it was. I joined them and saw Fenris throw Jax to the floor, Jax jumped up and punched him in the face and Fenris punched him back. They fought terrifyingly well, they blocked most of each other’s hits and would counterattack and sometimes drop one another to the floor, they’d always end up back on their feet though and both were covered in blood. Jax side kicked Fenris in the side of his head, but the second time he tried, Fenris grabbed his foot and twisted, so he fell. Jax kicked out at his legs, making Fenris drop to the floor too, then he straddled him and started punching him brutally, Fenris didn’t seem to feel the pain because he laughed humorlessly and spat blood on the floor. I think the laugh made Jax lose control because he wasn’t just fighting Fenris anymore, now he was trying to outright kill him, I think. He grabbed Fenris around the throat and started choking him, Fenris broke the hold Jax had and pushed him off. He got to his feet and stopped trying to fight Jax knowing Jax had lost control of himself. He flipped Jax onto his front, but it ended up taking four other men to help, including the alpha. Jax was strong, and they barely restrained him long enough to cuff him in chains behind his back. “Get the f***k off me!” Jax raged. He was growling and snarling, his eyes pure gold, and I was surprised he hadn’t shifted with his wolf so close to the surface. I’d never seen it in anyone else before, but all I saw looking through Jax was the wolf, there was no trace of the human right now, he should have been in wolf form because right now, there was nothing but an animalistic look in his eyes, it was like the wolf had taken over the human body rather than the other way around. “Quit it!” Fenris snapped as Jax kicked out at him. “You started this s.hit!” Jax growled, his voice barely human. “We had an argument, Jax! It was supposed to be a simple challenge fight, not you trying to f.ucking murder me!” “If I wanted you dead, you’d be dead!” Jax snarled, and then he was being pulled away from the scene and probably down to the cages. Jax spat blood at his brother’s feet as he was led past him, but Fenris didn’t react, both of them were a bloody mess, but I didn’t care and ran into his arms. Fenris draped one arm lazily around my shoulders and let me cuddle against his chest. Everyone stared, but no one dared say anything, I think they were scared of the triplets, or at least of Jax and Fenris after that fight. More blood must have pooled in his mouth because Fenris spat more onto the floor and said, “I need to clean up.” I felt his anger through our bond before he shut himself off from me, I hadn’t known you could do that, one minute I felt what he felt, and then it was like a mental shield slamming down between us and I felt nothing. He left me to go clean himself up, and I finished dinner for everyone. Another hour passed before I forced myself to muster the courage to go see Jax, he was still my friend after all and I wanted to make sure he was ok. If I was completely honest with myself, I suppose a part of me still couldn’t seem to stay away from him. I made my way down to the basement and looking at Jax was just wow, I don’t think the reaction I felt had anything to do with the mate bond, it was all him. He looked ridiculously hot, it was stupidly crazy how he managed to look like some dangerously powerful hunk without even trying. He was in his usual position on the floor, one leg out with the other knee up, his arm draped lazily over it. His face was bruised, and he had a split lip that was still bleeding a little, all his knuckles were covered in blood that was still somewhat wet, but also drying. His golden blonde hair was more of a tousled mess than usual, and he truly was the most beautiful man I’d ever seen, even in this state he made it look sexy as hell and those eyes added even more unique hotness to him, one piercing blue and the other a piercing green both with a gold rim around and flecks of gold running through, and I felt powerless against his beauty as he brought those eyes up to look at me.
