Chapter 1
"Parker May Wolfe!" The alpha's voice boomed through the pack house so loud it shook my bones.
I knew I was in trouble, again. I scorched through the couch. It wasn't my fault! I told Alex to stop pulling my hair. I got angry and warned him, but he did it anyway and next thing I knew, my palms were hot, and a beam of light escaped through my hands. Alex and Paul ran away as the blast went past them and straight onto the couch. I was only fifteen, how was I supposed to control my emotions? My brother's friend was always picking on me and I didn't like the attention, it was high time I showed him what I could do. Well, what I could try to do. I just got this power last year on my fourteenth birthday, dad and I were supposed to practice using this power, but my mother was attacked by rouges and was unable to heal. She passed away six months ago, and the pack is still in mourning, but Paul and I needed to be strong for our father. Especially Paul, he was in training to become the next Alpha of the Crescent Moon Pack when he turned eighteen, which was only three years away.
"I'm sorry daddy, I told Alex to stop but he didn't! He kept grabbing my hair! " I cowered on my bed as he approached, trying to make myself as small as I could.
With a very large sigh, he sat at the edge of my bed. His hair was starting to turn gray. The dark circles under his eyes never left after the attack. Mother’s passing made him age almost 20 years, so he looks like the old man he is. This is very uncommon for werewolves. Our biology and metabolism keep us looking almost five to ten years younger than we really are. When my mother passed, dad felt the mate bond snap, and we almost lost him too. The mate bond is sacred, you'll always know what your mate feels and if the bond is special enough, you will feel your mate is in pain. Dad felt everything mom did. He pulled through for us and the pack but now he just looks like an old man, and I can tell he's tired.
"Parker, you know how important it is to keep your emotions in check. You can't just be blowing people up! Do you know how special you are? We have never seen the power you yield in our lifetime, only the stories passed through generations.” He explains. He looks out the window, one small cloud coming into view through my window.
“The legend states that every female who has some kind of power gets forced to bare a mark, not by her mate. You know how important our true mate bond is, right Par?” I nod my head; he caresses my tiny hand in his massive ones and my blue eyes meet his green one. “You deserve to have your true mate.” He smiles and releases my hands. He slaps his knees and stands up. “We will find a way to help you control your powers… and your emotions. Now, where did your brother run off too? It’s almost time for the alpha meeting.”
"Paul and Alex ran into the garden." I told him and he walked out, closing my door behind him. I know he's trying his best to have a heart to heart, but I know deep down he is worried about me. I am of pure alpha blood and if anything the legends say are true, I could put my pack in danger of more attacks and one night, after I got my powers, I heard my mother and father talking about how my powers and blood could make someone so power-hungry. I could be used a breeder. Goosebumps ran over the skin on my arms at the thought.
I did my homework after dad left my room. School is very important to me, and I was determined to beat Paul with honors. Paul and I may be twins but he tells me all the time how he’s better at everything because he was born 18 minutes before me. Paul was better at many things than I was, but archery and school were my skills to show off. He will be alpha when dad retires, so I had to think about an actual career for myself because I was NOT about to just rely on being a Luna, especially if my mate was an omega. Everyone knew I was going to be an architect.
Paul had already stood at six feet. He and I have been in basic training with our warriors since we could walk, so he takes pride in being muscular and ripped so he can "have any pick of a mate he wants". Which honestly wasn't that far fetched with his short brown hair and bright green eyes. He looks just like dad and has the charm of Medusa; he will be a very good-looking man in the short future. I, however, look just like mom did. I have long blonde hair that runs down my back just to my bubble butt. I keep toned but, unfortunately, I currently have a very flat chest from all the training, but mom always said I will be "gifted" in due time. My bright blue eyes are my favorite feature, and dad always told me I'll have all the other alphas swooning over me when I'm eighteen.
Schoolwork is done, dad and Paul are still in the alpha meeting. I'm not sure what this meeting is about, we haven't had any rogue attacks in a while, but I know Alpha Brian has been trying to get dad to merge his pack, Red Moon, with our Crescent Moon pack.
Dad never did like Alpha Brian, especially when he tried to make a move on mom. Mom was a beautiful woman and a great Luna. She was honest, fair, and most kind hearted. But Alpha Brian was a cruel man, and his pack has been in trouble for some time now. He lets his warriors treat the other pack members however he wants, including r****g unmated females. Rogue attacks happen quite often on their borders because they don't use discipline, so there is no one watching the territory. He's also a drunk that abuses women, mom always tried to stay away from him. She always warned me to stay away as well, she never liked how he looked at the females in our pack. His son and Paul's best friend, Alex, is the result of one of his women, but since he is the first born and has alpha blood, Brian was happy he had an heir to his throne. I hope Alex doesn't follow in his father's footsteps, but the way he looks at me, pulls my hair and always wants to keep me close, gives me the creeps.
It was another beautiful day in Redwood. Heat was creeping in as summer came. The 500 acres of Crescent Moon were surrounded by red oaks and grasslands as far as you can see. I hated the heat. I was the only one in the entire family and almost the entire pack that stayed indoors as much as I could. My pale white skin was blistered every year from sunburn, my skin would itch, and my breath was always short. My favorite place in the whole pack house was the kitchen, specifically the walk-in freezer. I even have a lounge chair in there for when it gets too hot, and it's my favorite place to sketch my architect designs. I walked outside to check the temperature and it was already 80 degrees. As soon as the warm breeze blew, my skin started itching. I decided the best place for me was the freezer.
I walked into the kitchen and saw Cathy. Cathy was our head and best cook. This woman knew almost every pack recipe from memory. "Hey Cathy!" I say as she has her back to me looking for something in the cabinet. "Parker!'' She smiles and turns to give me a hug. "Those damn alphas up there in that meeting aren't going to leave me anytime to get dinner ready for the pack if they keep demanding snacks!" I laugh and grab an apple from the counter. "Is it already too hot outside?" She noticed the sketchbook in my hands, and I nod with a smile. "Oh Parker, I hope someday, you meet your mate, and he lives in the arctic circle, so you don't have to stay inside so much!" she says as she pats my head. I headed into my tundra office and took a seat. I'm not sure how much time has passed but all of a sudden my notebook flies out of my hands, and I am looking at a black-haired, brown-eyed i***t in front of me.
"You missed me." Is all he said.
"Actually, I didn't miss you at all. You need to want someone's company in order to miss them."
"No, you missed me." He had a smug smile on his face. For a fifteen-year-old, he sure thinks very highly of himself. "You can't control your heat, so you ended up putting a hole in the couch." Oh, then yes. I did miss him. And him bringing it up again after throwing away my notebook and interrupting my drawing time has already got me boiling. I clench my fist together, my palms already heating back up.
"I came in here to cool down, and here you are heating me back up, if you don't want me to miss you again, you had better leave."
Alex just stands there, that smug smile on my face. He's staring at my lips, and I grow incredibly uncomfortable. I wanted to push him away, but I was afraid about what might happen if my hands touched his body. I wanted to slap that smile off his face, and just the thought of maybe leaving a blistering handprint on his check made me smile. Alpha Brian didn't want him at the alpha meetings yet, so he was always instructed to "entertain me" when Paul wasn't around. My hands were starting to hurt from being clenched, he was too close for comfort and his eyes were growing darker. His eyes were almost black, which was odd because usually that means your wolf is pushing through. He was too young to have a wolf, right? His father's wolf was a large, pure black wolf. We have never seen his mother nor her wolf that I know of, so I wonder what his wolf would look like. I sat there, palms burning for a minute, wondering about his wolf when I was interrupted.
"Oh, so I make you hot, huh Parker?" His eyes are black now, his voice is just a little bit lower. Now I was starting to get scared. He stared at my eyes and then at my lips. I got the courage to slap his cheek. I was right, I did get to leave a bright red handprint right under his pitchback right eye. It started blistering immediately, even in the frigid freezer.
"Ow you b***h!" He yells. He grabs his cheek with one hand and puts his other hand on my throat. He pins me against the chair, slightly choking me. His eyes still pitch black, his grip tightening, he grits through his teeth "One day Parker Wolfe, I will make you mine. One day you will be begging me to be your mate and, even if you don't beg me, I will take what I want. And what I want is you. You. Will. Be. Mine." I can't breathe, I'm panicking. I grab his hand that is around my neck. I used my other hand and put it on his chest. My hand is heating up, a dull yellow glow around emits from his black shirt. Next thing I know, there's a blast and he ends up outside the freezer since he left the door open.
I am gasping for air, he's on his ass. "What the f**k is going on here!"
The voice I am unfamiliar with, but it creates a fear in me like I've never known. I walked out of the freezer to find Cathy, my dad, Paul, and Alpha Brain. Paul is helping Alex up off the floor. Dad and Brain are looking at me. Brain has a smug smile on his face and his eyes are filled with amusement. Dad had a mix between fear and anger contorting his face. His eyebrows are burrowed, and his hands are clenched. Cathy runs over to me to see if I'm okay. I removed my hand from my neck and it started to bruise. Alex's handprint and fingernails are embedded into my neck. Alex gets up, breathing short, his right cheek is blistered, and his shirt has small holes in it from being on fire. All Brain says is "Well, looks like we may have overstayed our welcome. Phillip, I'll see you again at the next meeting. Let's go, Alex." He shakes hands with my dad and grabs Alex's arms, his eyes never leaving me.
Alex still looks dazed as he looks at me and makes a kissing face with his lips. It makes my skin crawl and gives me a very uneasy feeling.
After they leave the kitchen, my father's face looks defeated. I tried to tell him that I didn't know what happened, that Alex was attacking me, and that I was utterly sorry. He looks at my neck, tells Paul to get me an ice pack and gives me a hug. Paul comes over with the ice pack and looks at me with sadness. I realized then I attacked his best friend, and I am now accusing him of potentially trying to force himself on me. I tell him that I’m sorry.
"Don't worry about it, Par. From the look of your neck, I believe you. I am sorry he tried to do that to you. I will have to continue to be cordial with him since he is also an Alpha, but that asshole will never come near you again!" He gives me a hug and returns out of the kitchen, probably to go punch something in the training ring. He has always been so protective and now I feel like I let him down and must make him choose between his sister and his best friend. Paul and Alex had gotten really close after our mother passed. Alex was Paul’s only non-pack friend, whereas I always had my head in my design books. Cathy was the closest thing I had to a true friend after I got my power, that’s when I made the freezer my second bedroom.
I was left alone in the kitchen with only my father and an ice pack. He was quiet. Too quiet. He looked at me, that old man's face seeping through, bags under his sudden sad eyes. I quietly stand there, failing to make myself small like I could do in my bed, for what feels like an eternity waiting for this man to speak, and I now realize that after what I just did, showed Alpha Brian and Alex what I could do, has potentially put the entire pack at risk.
He sighs and finally speaks, "Parker, what you did to defend yourself was what you needed to do, but now that Alpha knows your secret, we need to make sure whoever he tells doesn't want to see it for themselves. You will be guarded; we will start training and I will find a witch to cast a spell to see if we can't contain it. You will stay in the pack house from now on, but after you
graduate high school, you're going to human college, far away. I am sorry I have to put you through this." My heart sank. I tried to protest but his alpha voice came through, "That's the final decision!"
He walks away, leaving me alone in the kitchen. I looked at my hands, feeling a sudden sense of power. I wish my mother was here to help me out. I feel so alone. I walk back into the freezer, grab my sketchbook and sit back on the lounge chair. Alex's voice came back into my head. "I will take what I want." I shivered. I put my knees to my chest and started to cry.
"Quit your crying, little wolf." I looked up. I'm alone. I wonder if it's my wolf, but I'm only fifteen. Normal alpha werewolves get their wolves at sixteen, others don't get them until their eighteenth birthday. It can't be my wolf. "Oh, little one, we are special. You are not alone. I will be with you. My name is Artemis."
