Chapter Nine

[Kat's P.O.V] "I can't believe you." I snarl at him, and he raises his head to look in my direction, his nostrils flaring. "Kat," he warns. "You have already disrespected me numerous times tonight, I already put you in your place, and you submitted. So cut the bullshit and tell me what the problem is." "You being here is the problem. You don't bother to check on me, and I find out you're here, fighting my old pack." "I made everyone well aware of my intentions before we left your old pack land. The sooner you accept your part of my pack, the easier it will be for you to fit in." He states, rubbing a hand over the stubble on his chin. "Why didn't you tell me? Or at least let me come with you." I ask, sitting down next to him. He laughs cruelly before responding. "Do you think that badly of me?" My eyebrows furrow in confusion as he says this. But my confusion is soon answered as he goes on. "I didn't want you to witness my pack destroying yours. People may think I'm a monster, but I'm not that much of one." He says almost absentmindedly. Like he couldn't believe that he even had to explain himself. I blink, startled. Maybe Elias had more to him than he was letting on. I needed to accept that he was my mate, and any decisions he made were now mine. Most of Tanner's pack saw me as nothing more than a killing machine. My wolf was in control, which made me deadly, no matter how much I wanted to be accepted for it. And here I was, treating Elias the same way I had been treated. The only bad thing he had done was him being with Mia. And even that, I couldn't blame him for. She had been there through everything. Everything I wished I had someone to help me through. "I'm sorry, you're right. I wasn't thinking." I say, my shoulders slumping forward in defeat. "You're right. You weren't," he snaps. And there he was, back to being Mr. Delightful. "Can we talk about Mia?" I ask, biting my lip nervously, turning to face him. "What about her?" he mutters darkly. "Can you see it from my point of view?! What if I had taken someone other than you as my mate? How would you feel in my shoes?" I ask, trying to make him see my dilemma. "Kat, I know. You don't think I don't feel the guilt? Mia and I have something I can't explain. She's known me for so long before I became this pathetic, blind wolf. And here you are, a hard-headed, insanely fierce female wolf that doesn't need someone like me as a mate." "Elias, I do need you, and I sure in the hell want you," I say, my hand reaching for his. Why hadn't I just talked to him about it? Honestly, I didn't know anything about this man next to me. But to be fair, he hadn't tried to get to know me either. I could change that. He takes my hand, kissing the inside of my wrist. Tingles erupt through my arm, sending a warm sensation through me. I had never felt anything like this before. It was like a fire had unleashed from his touch, consuming my body. I needed this man. No, I wanted this man. "You should get back to the pack house. It's dangerous for you to be out here." He says, suddenly standing up, my hand falling with a thump to my lap. Before I can answer, he's shifting. His wolf casts one more look in my direction before he takes off after the rest of his pack. I stare at the fire before getting to my feet. I shift, allowing Kit to regain control, and she yips happily at the attention Elias has just given us. "Pretty soon, he won't even remember Mia." She says, her tongue rolling out happily as she runs. I didn't have the heart to tell her she might be wrong. I didn't know what I was going to do about Mia. Elias had made it very clear she would be a part of our life. Suddenly an idea pops into my head. What if I talked to Mia? Surely she would see my side of things. Mia's mate could be my answer; what if I found hers? That thought seemed suddenly stupid. There had to be about a billion wolves in the world, and there was no way I could discover Mia's mate that easily. A dark silhouette stands in the garden, and I hear a soft voice muttering. As I get closer, I can see Olivia standing there, wringing her hands together in worry. "Kat, thank god Eli would have killed me if I had lost you." She says, relief washing over her features. I lower my head in apology, and she offers out her hands. In each hand, she holds a piece of clothing. "I wasn't sure about your size, but I knew you would need it." Gratitude rushes through me. Elias' pack was among the most caring people I had ever met. I grit my teeth and vow that once I become Luna of the pack, I will give all I have to offer. It wasn't much, but I'm sure they would be happy I was trying. Olivia turns so I can shift, and I hurriedly pull on the clothes she had given me. They were a little baggy, but that was okay. Olivia turns back around after I clear my throat, and she chuckles softly. "I like you," she suddenly says. "But you don't even know me yet," I say, laughing softly. "I can always tell a good person when I see one. I'm not normally wrong about these things." She says, looping her arm through mine. My mouth falls open at the sudden contact. She giggles softly, pulling me back toward the pack house. "You know what, Olivia, I like you too," I say, offering her a dazzling smile. I hope everyone in the pack was as accepting as she was of me. But that thought was for a later date; I just needed to find a way to get through to Mia.
