Chapter 9

Raina When I opened my eyes, I was already inside the hospital and lying on a hospital bed. I saw Evo sitting at the side of the bed while Minerva and Rina, as well as Daddy, were all standing at the foot of the bed. I slightly groaned because the part of my head that was hit by the flower pot Rina smashed against my head suddenly hurt. Because of what I did, Evo looked at me. "You're finally awake, Raina. How are you? Do you feel anything painful besides your head?" Evo asked me worriedly. I just shook my head in response to his questions. "Tell me what really happened. Did someone hurt you intentionally?" "I already told you that Raina accidentally slipped while watering the plants and hit her head on one of the flower pots," my father quickly answered Evo before I could open my mouth to tell the truth. "You should be the one to tell your fiancé about what happened, Raina. He thinks we hurt you. He doesn't believe it was just an accident," Daddy said to me. There was a slight pain in my chest because my father knew what really happened but he was covering for Rina. It only proved further that I meant nothing to him. Rina was the only one he considered his child. "No. It wasn't an accident, Evo." I clearly saw how Rina's face suddenly turned pale when she heard what I said, while concern was evident on Minerva's face and there was a threat on my father's face. "Someone pushed me which is why I slipped and hit my head on the flower pot. I think someone just wanted to play a prank on me." This is the last time that I will do a favor to their family. They do not consider me as part of their family, so I should think that I don't have a family either. Even though I covered up what Rina did to me, I wanted to make her nervous, so I said that someone pushed me instead of agreeing with what Daddy said. "Who pushed you? Did you see who it was? Tell me so I can hold that person accountable for what he did to you," Evo said to me with a dark expression. I slowly shook my head. "I didn't see it because I immediately lost consciousness when my head hit the flower pot." I saw the three of them breathe a sigh of relief when I said I didn't see who pushed me. "Whoever pushed you should be thankful that nothing bad happened to you and the baby in your womb because if something bad had happened to both of you, I promise they would end up in jail," Evo said with clenched fists. I breathed a sigh of relief when I found out that nothing bad happened to the baby in my womb. However, it feels like Evo is guessing who I am referring to as the one who pushed me, and he said that to warn the three people in the room that they would end up in jail if they hurt me again. "Don't worry because I think the person who did this to me is already trembling with fear, so she won't do it again," I said to Evo, then glanced at Rina, whose eyes suddenly widened. "Why are you looking at me? Was it me who pushed you?" My half-sister pretended to be angry so Evo wouldn't think she was the one who pushed me. Evo will definitely not let this pass when he finds out that I didn't slip because someone pushed me but because Rina hit me on the head with a flower pot. "Shut up! Your voice won't help your older sister recover quickly," Evo scolded Rina, who suddenly fell silent and hid behind our father. My father probably sensed that Evo guessed that Rina was responsible for my hospitalization, so he didn't say anything to defend her. Even my stepmom seemed mute and didn't speak. "I know you have a lot of work, so you don't need to watch over me, Evo. I can stand up and get out of bed on my own," I subtly dismissed Evo. The room was filled with tension because of his presence, and I felt like the three inside the room could no longer breathe. "You're right. I still have a lot of work to attend to, so I won't stay long and will leave now. But I'll leave Pit outside your room. If you need me, just tell him and I will come. And from now on, he will be your personal bodyguard." "No one is causing trouble in Raina's life, so she doesn't need a bodyguard. Besides—" Dad's objection was cut short when Evo spoke. "Don't worry, Mr. Cervantes. I will pay Pit's salary. All he needs to do is watch over Raina to ensure her safety. Not only inside your house but also outside. You know that with the number of corrupt officials I clash with, many are angry with me. I don't want them to use your daughter against me," Evo explained at length. My father could only nod in agreement. Not long after, Evo left and Pit stayed outside the door to watch over me. As soon as Evo left the room, Daddy approached me angrily and reprimanded, "What are you doing earlier, Raina? Do you want to get your younger sister imprisoned?" I couldn't help but sneer when I heard the word "sibling" come out of my father's mouth. "Sibling? Does she know that I'm her sister when she hit me with the flower pot? Do you know that I'm her sibling, Dad? The moment she hit me on the head with a flower pot, she didn't think I was her older sister. The moment you covered up for Rina, you also didn't think she was my sibling and you only have one daughter. You should be thankful that I didn't tell Evo the truth instead of scolding me." "Why are you selfish, Raina? You've already taken your sister's fiancé, and now you want her imprisoned?" Daddy angrily asked me. In his eyes, only Rina mattered. Her happiness was all he cared about. He didn't care if his child ended up killing another child. "Why don't you tell those words to the three of you, Daddy? Why don't you ask yourself why the three of you are so selfish?" I couldn't stop my tears from falling. My chest hurts so much. What I'm feeling now is even more painful than the pain I felt when I found out my ex-boyfriend cheated on me. "Your daughter is really good at answering back now, Reynold. Obviously, she has a fiancé she's proud of, whom she just took from my daughter," Minerva mockingly said, adding fuel to my dad's anger. "Someday, Evo would realize that you don't deserve him," Rina said to me. "She's an ingrate! After I provided all her needs, she now looks down on me just because she has someone else to rely on." Even if my father doesn't say it, I can sense the regret in his voice for raising and educating me. It only makes my chest hurt more. He gave me my needs, but he failed to give me the love of a father, which I needed the most. "Can you all please leave the room? My head hurts so I want to be alone," I said to them in a pleading tone. My father became even angrier because I was making them leave the room, thinking that it was just an excuse to chase them away. They didn't want to go out, so I was forced to call Pit, who immediately entered the room and forcibly took the three out. I sobbed when I was alone in my room. I thought I was immune to the pain whenever Daddy defended Rina against me. I thought I wouldn't be hurt anymore when they ganged up on me with unpleasant words. But apparently not.
